Pop 2 is such a monumental record it's insane. like it's THAT girl. it's her NFR, her blackout, her lemonade, her velvet rope, her THRILLER...

she was at her lowest, she was fat nasty and broke... career in shambles. xcx world shelved. i love it money had dried up. boom clap money spent on paying back SOPHIE for vroom vroom. her landlord BEATING on her door for rent. her bf had left her after she cheated on him. iggy was not calling her back for fancy 2.0. she was truly ALL ALONE. she had one chance and came on this bitch mad as HELLL. and just like that she became a critical darling made it into every end of the year best album list best new music from pitchfork rate your music had her name in BOLD it was truly a moment

edit: to put things in perspective... it's the #4 mixtape of ALL TIME on rate your music. charli the ARTIST that you are https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/mixtape/all-time/

I don’t think I can cope with this thread going dormant  it feels so weird and final having this album (almost) out.

I hope that there are more official releases and unheard leaks that trickle out from now on, because it’s hard to think about music going forward without her, and without the speculation and anticipation around her live sets and collabs and everything.

She just had something nobody else really did. I discovered her alongside pc music back in 2014 and even most of that crew just doesn’t excite me the same way anymore. This is making me emotional all over again almost worse than when she actually passed

I think it all comes down to the fact SOPHIE was constantly switching music while playing it live. I think of this album as somehow a vehicle of what SOPHIE wanted to portray during the live shows as well, especially since that was a big piece of these songs coming together. I also find it interesting that within one of the last interviews/profiles, Ben mentions being aware of how SOPHIE was happy with certain parts but not others of some songs, so I can imagine they might decided to chop up some songs and make sure they'd all flow together.

Waiting until friday to finally listen, but it's just bittersweet to imagine the world SOPHIE would build while playing live.

I think the demos she played live were just the first takes of the songs with some live improv as well and that it was never in her mind to keep them that long, but to recontextualize them in the format of an album. Just like a film director who shoots many scenes and then cuts some of them for whatever stylistic/plot purpose reason. Benny himself talked about how she wanted “some parts of the songs to be kept and some others to be removed” or smth like that.

I am still gagged by the tracklist like… Nina Kraviz?!? Hannah Diamond?!?! The techno songs back to back?? This looks so epic I’m even more hyped now
Honestly WHO CARES about some songs we expected not making the cut, we are getting so much unheard stuff it’s unreal

Just because it doesn’t align with the most common and fixed notions of what pop is, it doesn’t mean Sophie didn’t think of it as a pop record.
For that matter, Sophie said in an interview that she considers Autechre as pop and electronic music legend Aphex Twin defined his record “Syro” as his pop album (nobody would ever call it that).

As for Plunging Asymptote, I have always thought it was a great track; I love the atmosphere, the textures, the sounds, it feels so electric and brings a lot of images to my mind.

Why are people so obsessed with knowing MORE than the people who were closest to her and collaborated with her?? We got 2 very in depth articles and you STILL have shit to say.

Also, SOPHIE was an experimental musician who THRIVED on messing with people, if you’re disturbed by “random beat switch ups” then that’s entirely on you.

You’re the problem here. Why force yourself into liking music you don’t actually have the capacity to understand, just to shit on it

but why speculate when we are told? i really doubt her family would purposefully "ruin" the album for some reason. i feel like this is exactly the reaction people wouldve had if sophie released the album. sophie never gave people what they wanted, and im pretty sure oil had a similar reception lol

The family has stated time and time again that this is absolutely not the case, and this is an album that had all of the tracks only touches away from being complete & a finalized tracklist before she died.

I don't love the tracklist either, and I also think that some of the artistic choices sound odd (haven't listened yet but going off the singles and what people in here have said), but what we have to remember is that if this album is underwhelming, it's underwhelming because of the decisions SOPHIE made.

Honestly seems like some people are using her grieving family as a scapegoat because you don't like the album but don't want to criticise the deceased.
Is it "objectively trash" or can you just not understand more abstract music? Some of you people would crumble if you had to listen to a noise album.

I’ve been revisiting a lot of her old interviews and even up into 2019 Sophie often said that “the only kind of music is pop music” and other things along those lines. Seems like to her it just meant music trying to reach a wide audience. So I really do think, to her, this is a pop album. Many of the tracks would be considered pop by anyone’s standards, but as for the rest of them I think the fact that they have identifiable structures, tangible sounds, and vocals/hooks (for the most part), etc made them pop in Sophie’s eyes. I think an album Sophie would consider “experimental” would be so batshit off the walls that it might not even register as music to most people, so anything less than that is her exploring the possible forms and extremes of “pop” (which is hardly possible to define anyway).

Also, plunging asymptote is a delicious rollercoaster of sensory confusion. There’s nothing else like it.

”Sophie left behind many more tracks in progress, some of which are likely to emerge as singles or EPs, or appear on other performers’ albums. But as a guardian of Sophie’s catalog, Long has decided that “this is the last Sophie album,” he said. “This is an album that we had worked on for years. We discussed everything about it — the themes, the track list. So to do another album and put it out as a solo album, it would just feel all wrong.”

im fairly certain reason why was made. "laser", the person who did a lot of the laser work for sophie, mentioned in sophiecord that he was called up to do laser work for her in the desert. im not sure if that msg was buried though because the old general was deleted because of the oil demo leaks
