I agree on the evermore take but fearless is pretty solid, has some really good songwriting and harmonies

I had fun listening to it. Its not amazing as some articles and fans are calling it, thematically or lyrically, which felt forced at times. I can already tell its gonna be a big grower. its nowhere near touching folklore or evermore or even 1989 imo which felt very genuine and vulnerable. but honestly sometimes you just want some boppy songs to have fun to alone late at night, and midnights offers that

does she need to? i’m sure she has more important things on her mind like deranged losers breaking into her car and stealing her computer.

Reputation (and Lover) is not what Taylor can do best. Like not at all (in terms of lyrics). Folklore and evermore are the two albums were she (finally?) owns up on who she is. Subtlety and yet…

Because in this case both albums share the same producer and the soundscape is very similar?

Because Melodrama is a modern synth pop masterpiece, is like talking about synth pop and not talking about Robyn

I love this album way more than rep or lover, and I can’t even compare it to folk/more bc it’s so different. It literally sounds like an after party at midnight.

I can’t believe there’s 7 new songs that nobody knew about

I still haven’t been able to listen to the full album because I’m currently on a birthday trip but I can’t believe I have even more songs that I thought!! I’m glad Aaron came back even for only a couple songs, him and Taylor really do make magic together! I’ve seen a lot of criticism about her lyrics but after folklore and evermore I’m glad that she’s dialing the lyrics back a little. FL/EM we’re huge pills to swallow

The critic reviews sound like they’ve been written at gunpoint  under Taylors team. I’ve been negative of her, but I’m not a hater. The album is a 7 at best.  It’s nothing spectacular like they are making out.  I dislike the over the top praise more than Taylor and her music.

Not to mention Lorde’s abilities as a songwriter. It’s truly staggering that a 16 year old Lorde was able to write a whole album about growing up as a teenager who feels more radical, mature and forward-thinking than 33 year old Taylor Swift reminiscing about past relationships and revenge-fueled fantasies.

Which leads me to another point: why exactly is Taylor Swift perceived as one of the greatest songwriters working today? Sure, she’s capable of storytelling greatness and even poetry as proved by Folkmore but a crushing majority of what exists before those albums + Midnights is quite… average songwriting - even redundant at times. The songs structures are very much similar to one another, the metaphors she uses are often compared to Lana’s because a lot of times she does sound like she’s been studying Lana for a long time and also wants to dive into summoning contemplative, evocative Americana symbolism but is that really enough to label someone as one of the greatest songwriters of our time? Even melodically speaking, she’s come to a point where her melodies are starting to blend into one another, with several Midnights tracks resembling others from previous albums, uncannily so.

Now I don’t want to sound like a Taylor Swift hater even though it might be too late for that and I truly feel like she was misrepresented and mistreated by the media for years - it was nice to see her blossom into her Folkmore era where it was all about the music and nothing else. However it does feel obligatory to start questioning these labels we throw at people based on their merit at their peak moments/projects when they might not be progressing as one would expect from someone so highly perceived and admired as her for something she’s clearly lacking or showing flaws at.

Sometimes I feel like all the hatred and unfair vitriol that was directed at Taylor and the way she overcame that kind of prevents people from rightfully criticizing her (from a place of genuine respect and love for music) or questioning her lyrical prowess when she’s showed time and time again she’s a very uneven songwriter.

Taylor's a sweetie. I've met her in person and she's such a cool girl.. I don't really listen to her much anymore (I used to be a crazed fan of hers and it was awesome because I could say I listened to country music even though I hate it lol) but occasionally I will play one of her sad songs when I have a breakup or something and need a song to cry to. That sounds awful, but it's true
