Lust For Life - Post-Release Discussion Thread + Poll

Haven't posted on here for a while but couldn't help myself from condemning all the Raycists on here, who have been slandering the iconic masterpieces Tomorrow Never Came and Get Free. Ok, that's all. -
I cannot explain how much I am currently craving for new Marina music. She will always be one of my ultimate faves but it's so annoying having to wait 84 years in between each album cycle. She better deliver with MATD4... if the songs are subpar I'm lowkey ready to unstan 4eva

Listening to the album in full for the first time and it's pretty good so far!

What just happened? Did her whole next album leak??? How the hell does this album? wtf???

Unchained Melody is such a good song, and I know it's a cover but it sounds so much like a song Lykke would write and sing herself. Great choice

LANALYSIS: Relating Songs To Known/Assumed Relationships
delreyfreak replied to Sitar's topic in Lana Thoughts
I think the line in "Get Free" where she says, "and you, as we found out, were not in your right mind" could be referencing Barrie, since we know he had some mental health issues/he was quite depressed, and this is ultimately why Lana probably left him, because he was not good for her own health and happiness -
Not sure if we're taking into account the production, but at 3:12 in "13 Beaches", there is a sound that is scattered all across "High By The Beach" (see, 1:50 for example - it's easier to hear in the instrumental version of the song) The last few seconds of "Heroin" are also almost identical to the last few seconds of "Cruel World"... go have a listen, you'll be amazed! You have to turn up the volume a bit to hear it though. The last few seconds of "Tomorrow Never Came" are also the same as the last few seconds in Lana's cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", the instrument and notes are exactly the same. Also, I've noted in the post-release thread already, but the melodies throughout "White Mustang" and "Heroin" are extremely similar... the latter is almost like a continuation or a reprise of the former. And of course, the "Get Free" chorus is quite reminiscent of "Back to the Basics", one of Lana's unreleased.

girlll, she could be talking about anyone here, not necessarily Barrie. It's more likely it's about Franny or a past bf from ages ago. Even though Lana's relationship with Barrie was likely quite rocky towards the end, I think she still has a lot of respect for him and I doubt she thinks of him as a "loser", just a man with mental health issues who wasn't good for Lana in the end. -

So I've been had a few thoughts about this album since I first listened to it in full, but decided to let them stew a little in case any other points came to me, and basically I have a feeling that Lana has been getting professional help from some sort of psychologist, counsellor or therapist and was possibly diagnosed with clinical depression and is now on medication. I know others in the past have speculated about her mental health and it has often been quite unhelpful and actually accusatory of Lana as fuelling her own sadness, when in reality she has probably had a serious mental health condition that she wasn't aware she could treat, or perhaps she was aware but didn't seek treatment. She has said that she saw a therapist three times before but found it quite unsuccessful. Quite clearly she has had mental health issues in the past (admitting so herself), likely a combination of anxiety and depression, perhaps related to her past substance abuse with drugs and alcohol, that she has openly spoken about. In "Lust for Life", there are a lot of lyrical allusions to this theme, in my opinion, that I wanted to discuss. What first struck me was the song "Heroin", in particular, the following lyrics: "I'm flying to the moon again, dreaming about marzipan Taking all my medicine to take my thoughts away" I think she's being quite explicit here, in that she is clearly taking some sort of medication that is having an effect on her mindset. A common treatment for anxiety or depressive disorders is obviously through anti-depressant or other similar medications. One could argue that this medicine could be for anything, but I say that because she says it "takes [her] thoughts away" it's clear to me it's not to address any physical/bodily issue, but a psychological one related to mental health. In the outro of Heroin she sings about wanting to make a change for the better, that there's something that "makes [her] head go crazy" and she'd "be lying if [she] said she wasn't sick of it". To me, this is Lana saying that she is willing to admit she has had many problems in the past. And if we look at "Get Free", she seems to admit that she really only has herself to blame for many of these problems. "Like my part was I was not discerning And you, as we found out, were not in your right mind" Clearly she's had a difficult time discerning when she's in toxic situations/relationships with people not in their "right mind" but is finally coming to acknowledge that and try to make amends to that. It makes sense if you think about what she's said in interviews recently, about trying to finally move on from toxic relationships and take care of herself first and foremost, rather than unhealthy and unhelpful people. When she sings of taking "the dead out of the sea and the darkness from the arts", and wanting to "move out of the black and into the blue", to me, this is her acknowledging she's been severely depressed and is finally ready to "cross the threshold" and make a step towards taking care of herself properly. She also wants this to be translated to her music and art as well, believing she can help others out there. Her "commitment", her "modern manifesto" is to gradually work on changing her mindset and sharing that with "all of us who never got the chance", "for... [insert name] and for... [insert name]". The chorus of "Get Free" supports this whole idea as well. She feels as if she's "got a war in [her] mind" (as alluded to in "Ride"), but finally admits she "want to get off" from "riding the ride"; a ride that has ultimately worsened her way of thinking. And these lyrics are also really important as well... "I never really noticed that I had to decide To play someone's game or live my own life But now I do, I wanna move" She is finally ready to take control of her life and get her life back together. Also, as a side note, when she sings of rainbows in the second verse, I have this weird idea that she could be thinking back to when she frequently used hallucinogenic drugs in the past, like going on a trip and seeing a wide array of colours, but they're not real, "their arches are illusions" and they "put you in a trance" (a literal, drug-induced trance). The way she sings about drug use on "Heroin" and that line about wanting to "get that cigarette smoke outta my face" on "In My Feelings" seems to me that she is becoming more aware of the harmful impact drugs have had on her life, and she's trying to move away from that. We saw this idea surface on Honeymoon, in "Religion", where she says "it never was about the money or the drugs", relegating them to something insignificant and a waste. Heck, even the official iTunes description for "Lust for Life" talks of how in "Get Free" she "makes a vow to shift her mindset". Now, I could be wrong about her having depression (although, I wouldn't say it's that far-fetched considering the highly melancholic tone in most of her work and her admitting she has had to see a therapist before, multiple times as well), but I think that for sure Lana is trying to grow and become the best person she can be through personal commitments to developing her character and living her life healthily. That's why she sings on "Change" about hoping that "by the time summer is done, [she'll] be able to be honest, capable" and so on. Anyway, excuse the Graham4everything length essay... I hope this wasn't a completely incoherent ramble but rather gives a little bit of an insight into my interpretation and understanding of Lust for Life. I genuinely think that Lana is on a path towards complete self-recovery from toxic relationships, a totally negative mindset and the wild, drug-addicted days of her past. -
Glad to see so much love for "Get Free" and "Heroin"... truly some of her best works ever

Here are my iconic moments The lyrical flashback to Ride in Get Free (flipping its meaning) The melodies of Get Free in the chorus (you'll hear it when you listen) The high notes in the chorus in WTWWAWWKD The "bitch"s and "fuck"s on Cherry are absolutely iconic, the song literally ends with a "fuck" The subtle fuck you to Trump in God Bless America and WTWWAWWKD (she literally says "is this the end of America?" ) Overall I can't think of any other "iconic" moments, so to speak, but overall the whole album is amazing! -

Wow so I came here to post about my fave songs but as I started listening them I realized that almost every song on the album was on the list So I'm going to try and rank them (although this will definitely have to constantly be shuffled as different songs grow on me) Get Free When The World Was At War We Kept Dancing Cherry Love Change Tomorrow Never Came 13 Beaches Heroin Beautiful People Beautiful Problems God Bless America - And All the Beautiful Women In It Groupie Love Summer Bummer Lust for Life White Mustang In My Feelings Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind Tbh, I'm not feeling 'In My Feelings' even though it seems to be one of the faves on here, the vocals sound a bit messily produced to me but idk, but it's still an AMAZING song overall. My overall highlights on the album: Get Free was definitely my fave song overall, I LOVE the throwback to Ride, I love the beach sounds at the end, I love the almost ABBA-esque feeling to it, I love the "out of the black, into the blue" parts, I love the message, I love her vocals, I love the production. Everything is perfectly in place with this song and it makes me so happy! I absolutely loved the high vocals in WTWWAWWKD - this is probably the vocal highlight on the whole album for me. Cherry is iconic and I love the "bitch" and "fuck" parts, they make the song 1000 times better The feminist anthem God Bless America slayed my life and all the subtle political messages on the album are great as well, since they don't feel forced to me at all (which I was admittedly a little worried about) and overall it's quite a positive message in a time of political despair for many. I remember loving the melodies in 13 Beaches and Heroin, and I love the features with Sean and Stevie Nicks, both their voices merge really nicely with Lana's. I got literal chills listening to Change, the piano with just her voice is beautiful, and I absolutely loved the way the backing instrumentals stop when she says "I can taste it turning sour" and there's like this coin dropping sound in the background then the piano starts up again and I thought that was a nice little touch. Overall it's a fantastic album imo and I can't wait to listen to this more, every song is carefully crafted and the production is varied enough to keep it interesting. I think the second half of the album is the standout for me (apart from a couple of tracks like Love and Cherry which are amazing). Not going to lie, some of the lyrics are a tad sloppy for me but then there are moments like on Get Free where the lyrics are SPOT ON and absolutely brilliant and meaningful that I can ignore the few lyrical mishaps here and there (mainly on the first half) -

Haven't read through all the recent pages so not sure if anyone has said this yet, but the chorus in Heroin has almost the identical melody of White Mustang's verses!! Reminds me of how she used similar melodies in Sad Girl/Pretty When You Cry (his bonny on the side/I'm pretty when I cry)... guess LFL is the true UV after all -
