Very predictable outcome. Beyoncé was gonna win this since the moment Jay-Z pulled that stunt last year. Beyoncé should've won AOTY for self titled, Lemonade AND Renaissance. Cowboy Carter being the album that finally won her AOTY is so random. It feels like a sympathy win. This was basically grammy voters making up for her getting snubbed in the past. And I actually really loved Cowboy Carter, but if I were to rank Beyoncé's albums Cowboy Cater would not be in the top 5. BRAT should've won, but oh well. Go Spring breakers.

Genuinely, you guys are crazy if you thought Charli was ever a contender in AOTY. The Grammys were never going to give a cocaine-centric party album that prize. It’s a slot considered to be reserved for only “high art” (i.e. serious, intentional, mindful, representational work) amongst a lot of the voting base and Brat does not clear that bar. Doesn’t matter what the cultural impact of the art was like outside of the voters’ bubble.

In terms of collaborations, musical history and study, and vocal performance, Cowboy Carter is Bey's best work--though both Renaissance and Lemonade are culturally most influential. I do think a lot of Academy voters had remorse, but to compare the deep historical showcase of CC to Brat..let's be honest y'all. Charli did an incredible job and deserves all the wins tonight but it is not the best album of the year.

I have and I stand by my opinion. “Emotionally complicated” music about doing cocaine, beefing with people in the industry, fantasizing about bombing the Grammys and mourning a dead friend, among other things. Big whoop.
 

It was never a contender. Ever. Critics are soft on pop music now because of crazy fanbases and Charli’s is one of the craziest.
