Surf Noir 188,793 Posted January 15 not entirely lana-related or anything too significant or crazy, but interesting nonetheless... so, yesterday, i found myself curious about steven mertens' music, so i decided to search him on youtube, not much came up, one song called on ice which i didn't find too interesting honestly, and a music video for a song called no roof, now, if you watch the music video and listen to the lyrics (they're kind of hard to understand honestly ) it may seem familiar to you... it features a girl wearing a wig walking around new york, the beach, and coney island, and not only that, but steven mertens sings the line lookin' like a calendar kitten which obviously she mentions in boarding school, now, you may look at the upload date (march 2nd, 2013) and assume it's a song he wrote about her, but if you look at the youtube channel which uploaded it, you'll see they also previously uploaded it on january 26, 2007, and i'm going to assume they didn't know each other yet, and even if they did, it was before she took on the coney island/new york/kitschy americana aesthetic around late 2007/early 2008, perhaps she took some inspiration from steven mertens' song and video because it's very lizzy-esque and this wasn't even her aesthetic at the time you can also see the original 2007 upload on a screenshot of his old myspace what led me to finding this in the first place was finding out (and realizing i was correct about) steven mertens was the guitarist at her october 22, 2009 show at canal room, by reading the information section on the thread about it in the early shows section i'm actually really surprised to find out he still worked with lana past 2007, i suppose i always assumed they only really worked together in 2007 and never really did past that, but i suppose i was wrong and he played at her shows at the least... it really seems like the more i know, the less i know! steven mertens performing a song mentioning calendar kitten while an old song of his featuring a girl in a wig frolicking around coney island and the beach also mentions it... it's literally all connected... 21 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I started looking into these photos earlier, because I thought I remembered them being connected to the Studio 356 sessions (makes sense, given the recording equipment + violin + Lizzy's hair). However, the weird part is that the poster on the back of the door matches this pic taken in 2007 in Lizzy and Chuck's apartment, where the violin is also barely visible: Given that I've never been able to track down any concrete evidence on Studio 356, is it possible that there's no such thing and the recordings were made at Lizzy's? If this is the case, I'm assuming that name was some sort of joke or invention of the band. In fact, I even have a sneaking suspicion that 356 could've been the apartment/street number This may have been noticed before, but it was kind of a revelation to me, after years of wishing I could crack whatever the hell Studio 356 is So, if anyone can shed any light on this, pls chime in -- if you're an ultra Lizzy stalker who knows her apartment/street number at this time... I need you Of course, there's also a chance that these photos are actually completely unrelated to those sessions, but in that case... what was she recording here i also accredited those photos to studio 365, specifically the february 28, 2007 session, but you're right, it's definitely at her apartment! there's a photo showing that poster but i can't find it right now (i believe it says stop the war on blood or something similar), i feel like if you can't find any sort of studio 365 in new york of any kind, it makes it seem more likely it's just a made-up studio/made-up name for her apartment, i suppose it would make sense for her at that point in her career to just record some demos with friends in her apartment rather than doing so at a studio (and the demos they recorded are not studio demos) also, a few pages back, it was brought up that nick ogawa, somebody who also participated in the WLSC 2006, played cello on some of lizzy's early works, is it possible he played the cello/strings instrument heard in the february 28, 2007 demos of raise me up (mississippi south), get drunk, and for k, pt. 2? 5 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
