Honeymoon - Pre-Release and Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Also the line between indie/mainstream is blurred now. Lana is only mainstream because of that viral song 'Video Games' and (maybe) belongs in Interscope, if she didn't have that her music would have been considered indie. And indie bands work with different people as well - it isn't the case that they only work as a collective anymore. (Thanks for the Lykke Li's example @@whitman)

But her second studio album sold 5+ million copies... and Born to Die, Blue Jeans, Ride and Summertime Sadness (both songs and videos) were pretty viral...

Just heard the song she's using for the tour intro and I love it, hope you guys are right about Honeymoon being somewhat similar.

By the way, I've seen some people mentioning that Honeymoon will be Lana's attempt at a happy album. Did she say something to hint this or are people just assuming because of the title?

Assuming. The Honeymoon lyrics, DLMBM, and her description of the album as being "noir" don't exactly seem like indications of an upbeat album to me, though.

After the video she last made, why would anyone think Honeymoon is going to be happy?

It is a continuous saga. And the last video was anything but.

BTW- I think alt-indie is the wrong terminology anyhow

I think what Lana really is is Progressive. Prog-Rock in the broad sense of the term as it was in the late 1960s early 1970s.

From Eno (who was in the Lou Reed pairing) to ELP to Elton and Genesis (before Genesis became Phil Collins AC)

alt is really a hybrid term anyhow.

Alt really means anyone who doesn't sell a huge amount, but the same person once they do, is sort of shunned from being alt so its a catch-22.

.

What it all really is is Hip. Not Hip hop, Just Hip.

Or in other words, Lana is in 1969 terms groovy as we used to say

What it really is is that Lana is doing what only guys did back then, so there is no comparison with others. She literally is the ultimate feminist in that she breaks all the barriers and is a true equal to all males

that came before in music, not a follower. A trail blazer.

and I am saying that without hyperbole.

And I expect Honeymoon to dive deeper into the film noir world where no good ever comes even if redemption does.

The top 40 people some want her to be (ewwwww) would have been bubblegum in the early 1970s.

Does anyone here really want Lana to be bubblegum throwaway?

Lana is our modern day Edith Piaf. Totally unique. a mixture of Brian WIlson Roy Orbison, Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, Elton & Bernie. Born to Die/Paradise is comparable to Elton's Captain Fantastic. All the records need to be listened whole. Waiting for a box set vinyl of all 400 songs not on any lp

why do so many people want lana to be considered indie? shes not and will never be considered an indie artist. your music elitism is showing :teehee:

Oh, we can't have the plebeian scum who listen to mainstream commercialised money-making trash like Nicki Minaj and Rihanna listening to Lana; who incidentally is quite literally the most iconic and legendary indie artist who's never whored herself out by performing on television or radio or doing photoshoots or other disgusting commercial stuff like that.

:hooker:

To be an indie artist dont you have to be like... independent? meaning youre not signed to a label and just make music on your own lol, maybe alternative is a better word? Idk.

THANK YOU CHRIST. That term is so thrown around now. But that's what it really means.

THANK. YOU.

This thread is a mess. I don't understand why all of you waste your time talking about what she should or shouldn't do. Obviously she'll do whatever she wants. Can't say that I don't care but if promo makes her uncomfortable I'll be okay.

But this is exactly what "speculation" it's all about. We speculate about the HM era (promo, track names, sound, videos, lyrical themes etc.) on the little information we have.

Regarding HM I have one more speculation to make that is based on the logic of this quick release after UV.

I think that the HM release is closely linked with the relationship between her and Interscope. There are two scenarios possible in my view:

1. Confrontation. I think that this scenario is unlikely because: her label gave her considerable artistic freedom, they didn't invested to much in her (UV promo was minimal) and she sold well overall (even with UV when we compare her to other artists), despite that she manifested some random behavior she's not a troublemaker and her image isn't really a problem. There is a "laissez faire" option regarding the HM release, variation which is also unlikely because we are talking about the financial interests of a huge label.

2. Synergy. She said that she had gone too far with UV and practically ended the era with an Iphone statement. Her label probably said that "we let you do what you wanted on UV but now please work with us, we want a proper big label release because we are the fckin biggest label in the world and you celebrated this fact with the chief on a Billboard feature". So, I think that the stars are aligned and Lana and her label want the same thing: a release of BTD proportions. The possible consequences of this:

- There will not be any seriously controversial lyrics on HM (some in the media tried to talk about "domestic violence" regarding the leaked HM lyrics but this opinions are laughable)

- HM will not be a slow affair like the second part of UV.

- She will return to a more pop sound with some jazz inflections, but I'm hoping for something new in her sound that usually distracts fans and critics from focusing solely on her lyrics. After the leaked lyrics I'm rooting more for the sound tbh.

- HM will have some hit candidates and one of them will be the lead single that she'll introduce (hopefully) on this tour (at the Gov. Ball) and she'll have a BTD level video coming out with it. Another 2-3 singles will come out in support of the album with at least one more video.

- She will be far more active, I'm certain that she will do some TV shows and you'll not see any random statements from her in interviews (that doesn't mean that they will not be interesting but I think that she learned her lesson from last years interviews)

A Lana stan can only hope (see you guys in this thread when the first single drops)
