yknow somethin, i've never properly read her poetry! i've seen a couple though and although i can't fully recall them, i do remember quite liking them.
love that kurt cobain clip!! and ironically enough, do kind of agree with what he's saying. i think there are songs where blunt and not overly-thought-out lyricism works well. i'll use nirvana as an example; the song 'sliver' is one of my all time fave songs, and lyrically it really speaks to me despite just being a simple and obvious tale about being a kid throwing a little bit of a tantrum because they're being dropped off at their grandparents' house and they're away from home. it's simple, it's blunt, it's honest and it works. if it was fancy and thought out, it wouldn't be the same. i feel that way about a lot of nirvana's music. it taps into a strange little place in my brain that just makes me feel really human and vulnerable. i think a lot of that is down to the simplistic and raw nature of the music
back to lana - there are plenty of her songs that shine with (and possibly because of) really simple and straightforward lyrics. video games is one of them! others like old money, oh say can you see, and cruel world do too. now that i think of it, it's an interesting idea to debate internally - the difference between lazy lyrics vs straightforward lyrics that may or may not work

jack antonoff wants to be dan auerbach, and the fact that this album is more recognized than ultraviolence is just another example of how whimsical politics run the music business.
that's jack antonoff for you!
i listened to it the night it was released and that's it (because i can't afford google play anymore anyway)
i just play the chords on my guitar and sing it myself when i want to reexperience it

in an atmospheric way.
oh say can you see, to me, has this raining at night walking down the road with headlights in your face and a clear moon above your head feeling. this feeling of being happy with your loneliness and being able to see the beauty in sad situations. like you're hanging out with friends laughing and you're so happy, but you know it will end and you'll be sad again. where the world moves fast, but your mind moves in slow motion. similar to the crying in the club feeling. video games gives me the same atmosphere. being happy and sad at the same time. enjoying life, but having this deep, unmovable feeling of loneliness.
as for lucky ones and prom song (gone wrong), they both have this "this is true love and there is literally no sadness in the world. let's escape this and spread our love and fire. c'mon baby" vibe. true love and running away together vibes.

Everyone: *hates the outro of TG*
Jack Antonoff: “The end just went on forever.… We were, like, ‘What if we just keep saying things?’”

I don't see how NFR! is being revered as the most mature and complex album lyrically. To me it's not that much more mature than a lot of her past albums from a lyrical point of view. I see it as being her safest and "tamed" lyrical "effort". In comparison to LFL which was a times very futile and juvenile, NFR! is somewhat of a step up from that, but still a bit futile and hollow to me. Lyrically some songs are just uncooked/unfinished, but also very subpar.
Honeymoon remains her most mature and elaborated album both lyrically and instrumentally.

The only contradiction was whether she came up with the idea for another name or her managers prompted her to. In the first quote she says "I". In the second she says "they". That's all. I think she was the one who decided on Lana Del Rey
But it's good to see you back longtimeman!

Read it closer - it's not a contradiction at all. The second quote is about people around her convincing her she should have a name other than a band name, or 'Lizzy Grant', while the first quote is about where the specific name 'Lana Del Rey' came from. (It's illogical that 'a series of managers and lawyers' would have somehow collectively come up with the name 'Lana Del Rey').

Summer Bummer is deeply underrated - I understand why much of the fandom wouldn't appreciate it because of how heavily hip-hop it is, but I think it's this brilliant combination of dark yet charming, light yet heavy, hard-hitting yet laidback. It's danceable and a real summer jam but it's also a little sinister and devilish. Also I fckn LOVE the lyrics: "You can't escape my affection, wrap you up in my daisy chains"; "White lines and black beaches and miles in between us"; "We travel for weeks just to escape your demons".

I saw it at the 'Endless Summer' in Toronto. It was probably the most noticeably back tracked song (w/ vocals), but it really showcased the band for those of us who couldn't take selfies with her in the front row.
She opened that show with 'Cruel World' and sang her goddamn heart out. Wasn't a perfect show, but at the same time in retrospect everything about it makes perfect sense.
Also fuck awards and fuck grammys. I hope she doesn't win just so jack antonoff can cry about it
