Everyone(the hipster music press) thought back around spring 2012 that she's a "flash in the pan" and will be irrelevant by 2013. Now she's bigger than ever.

From "Video Games" to "Big Eyes", Lana has never put out a song that I thought cringe-worthy or bad in any way. I know she is not the sole songwriter for many of her songs, but that doesn't change the fact that she knows how to partner up with quality songwriters too. That's a skill in itself. She has a tremendous visual arts flair that IMHO is indelible. From the videos of "Video Games", "Blue Jeans", "Summertime Sadness" with their super-8 type quality to the epic "Ride" to "Tropico" I think she's a female David Lynch.

On top of all that, a new album coming at the end of the year. She's literally the only woman in the pop industry(other than Sia) that I can celebrate.

There is a way she invokes nostalgia and sadness that is indelible. Some people have a problem with that, but someone has to carry that torch. She is fucking crazy, but she is free.

    Keep on sad-corin' Lana.

I think all these deluxe editions and iTunes-bonus tracks, Amazon-bonus tracks are a total ripoff.

For my money "Surfs Up" and the original SMILE album is the greatest pop triumph ever.

No doubt LDR biggest current influence is more melancholic-pop songs, but none of the imitators has a real clue. Form, no substance. Personally I've been listening to melancholic songs for years before LDR showed up in alt-rock, new-age and older pop. But it's refreshing to see a new artist write in that vein.

"Guns and Roses" is my new favorite song. The verse melody reminds me of Tori Amos' "Hey Jupiter". Intentional?

The opening and Lana's singing totally reminds me of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Tell me that it doesn't.

I think the American critics are tainted by their obsequiousness for hip-hop/X-Factor type stuff.
  18. HONEYMOON liked a post in a topic by smoledman in Lana Del Rey "Ultraviolence" is expected to sell in over 175k copies!
Album sales are generally way down. People are listening more on streaming services like Spotify/Rdio/Pandora. I'd be far more interested in # plays these songs are getting on such services than album sales.

I think it's that ongoing nervousness in the face of mega-stardom is what endears her so much to people. She doesn't seem to have the stinking air of superiority about her like a Kanye.

Hey look. I don't follow pop music generally speaking. I'm into alternative rock, progressive rock, classical music and older pop music(70s-90s). Occasionally I'll check in to see what's happening and mostly disappointed. "Royals' is a great effort for a 17yo, but she has a LONG way to go to Lana's level.

Zach - so far LDR has not let us down with the quality of her releases. Let's have some faith, ok? At least to me she seems to be pursuing an artistic agenda from Day 1. Now that particular agenda might have ended with Tropico or it might not have. But I can't wait to see where she'll take us next.
