Us Against the World vs. You & Me

So I says to my husband, "The boobs get lifted before the teeth get shifted," it's what Jesus would do. One set of curtains in this house just got washed, I'll give you a hint: look at my bay windows. If your man loves you, he will always come home with Summer's Eve. There's no excuse to be loose.

You know, I just had a really intense moment listening to this song a few times, and I know the line's pretty much been settled on, but I figured just for the sake of discussion, I'd share a lyric I interpretively heard. You said if you could have your way, You'd make the/your nighttime maul today, So it'd suit the mood of your soul. Highly unlikely that that's the lyric, I'm certain, as the "the" in the second line was interpreted as a really soft one, and the "your" was just another interpretation; but it was just interesting how that verse struck me after interpreting it like that. Poetically brutal and reflective of the internal ravaging going on in the mind of the "you" in the song. The destruction of optimism and light, the wild, indiscriminate manifestation of something dark and brooding. I loved the song already, probably not as much as I loved AFFA, but after catering thought to its ranking in the Top 10, along with being in the mood for the song as of late, I gave Black Beauty a different kind of chance to capture me and thrill me. And I'm glad I did. BB is a great insight to the new era of Lana, and will be a great addition to ULTRAVIOLENCE if Lana doesn't scrap it.

OMFG YES. LOVE. I'm sure they're going to have something up their sleeves for this year, it's been long enough! I really hope so! I'd love for a sister-duo party this year between FAK and The Pierces.

Tropico named 2nd biggest flop of 2013 by VH1
Wryta Thinkpiece replied to Foolish's topic in Awards & Nominations
This is why artists have to endure so much bullshit (because that's exactly what it is) when they share their projects with the public, because now it's all about success being defined by the number of views and monetary worth, along with the nitpicking and pointless comparisons of who-does-what-better, which leaves zero room for art to be appreciated for what it is. Because she can, and she wanted to, so she did. You mean, besides because she could, wanted to, and did? "Because fuck you, that's why." "Summertime Sadness" is almost two-years-old, there's a contradiction here if we're going to talk about old songs being used for recent projects. So if "Young & Beautiful" and Cedric Gervais' remix of "Summertime Sadness" (keyword "remix" of a song that is, again, almost two-years-old, TWO-YEARS-OLD,) were to have been featured in Tropico instead, it would have validated Tropico's worth as a 30-minute film? It was a short-film, let's not over-exaggerate here like it was a grueling four-hour loop of the same songs over and over again. On what basis are we comparing Tropico to that it can be fairly dictated that it wasn't good? Tropico wasn't meant to be a revolutionary short-film, it was simply a short-film telling the story of redemption with the intention of bringing the era of BTD to a close. Just because Tropico may have been a bit difficult to follow the first viewing, does not mean it wasn't good; just because Tropico was "awkwardly literal," doesn't mean it wasn't good (not to mention, it may have been "literal," but I want to know where it was "awkward.") And just because there wasn't enough dialogue between the cast, just because there was only one Lana-written monologue, doesn't mean that Tropico wasn't good. If anything, Lana's reading of an excerpt from Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric" solidified and clarified the meaning behind "Body Electric". I look at that song in a totally different light after Tropico. And Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" was a well-placed reading, as it helped smoothly transition between the final moments of Eden and the dead-paradise-reality Lana found herself in during "Gods & Monsters". Did we not read these poems? Did we not read a single poem from the likes of those two men? I'm trying hard to not say that this is a matter of appreciating Tropico more if we weren't so absorbed in the elements of mainstream artists' work, but seriously, let's not write off an artists' work just because we may not have understood it fully. The cinematography was beautiful all throughout Tropico, and if anything, the short-film shed light on the inner-workings behind Lana's work, we got insight to how and where she finds her muse, we had a-chance-a-minute for a half-hour to open our minds and go on a small little adventure with Lana; it was beautifully strange and strangely beautiful. And this is coming from someone who didn't entirely care for "Body Electric," "Gods & Monsters," and "Bel Air," and I still think that Tropico is being seriously underrated, whether it was meant to cater to the masses or not. For what Tropico is, it is very beautiful, and it's not being given a fair chance (which seems to be a reoccurring theme with the general public when it comes to Lana.) Well, this answered my question when I asked on what basis we were comparing Tropico to, if not indirectly, since this seems to be a biased comparison between two artists who, aside from starting out in New York, have hardly anything in common as far as sound, personality, influences and delivery go. If you had not spent the half-hour thinking of all the "very Gaga/not-so-Gaga" comparisons you could've came up with instead of letting yourself be immersed in Tropico, maybe you would have seen both Lana and her short-film in a different light. Not to mention I hardly see any element of Tropico that is even closely similar to Gaga's projects, so...is this because you're bored and had a quota to reach? But never mind that, it's quite pitiful that comparisons like this are pretty much what structures art today. So much effort is invested into finding likeness in art that we forget to appreciate art as it is; a multi-dimensional form of expression that does not need to be compared to the likeness of another artist's expression to dictate its worth. Had you been around when Picasso was, all his art would've been Tropico to you just because it wasn't Da Vinci or Michelangelo. You didn't care for Tropico not because it "wasn't good" or because it was "bloated and awkwardly literal." You didn't care for Tropico not because the songs were "old" and "less-than-stellar." You didn't care for Tropico not because it was a poor-shot at "being Gaga." You didn't care for Tropico because you misunderstood Lana, but most especially, because you misunderstood art. Besides that, comparing female artists to the likes of Gaga is very 2010, so "for 2014," you might want to find another artist to set your unreasonably supported expectations for other artists to or just stop with the comparisons altogether since it's as old as it is unfair, and hardly what art is about. And with that, I call this whole listing a flop.- 84 replies

I mean, if it's just one thread a week, it shouldn't cause too much clutter, and it would definitely be less likely for the new SOTW to be overlooked. If we do it that way, we can also make it a mass-participant thing as well; like, every week, the frequent participants of the topic are noted and then one member from the participants is randomly selected to announce the new SOTW (but that would also mean that they'd have to make sure they are responsible enough to put up the SOTW on time so that each song gets a fair reign.) Though I don't see why just one thread wouldn't suffice, as long as @ is willing to put in some time once a week to put each old SOTW in a collection under a spoiler to avoid confusion, and then, of course, the once-a-week reply announcing the new SOTW (BUT to make COLA's job easier, we could even do the new announcer thing in one thread as well if we wanted to, and then he would just have to put the new SOTW info on the first post.) Honestly, I'm 100% for this either way, how this hasn't happened yet, I don't even know. Kudos to COLA for proposing a fantastic way for all of us to have a little more fun and further connect with each other under the glory of the Blessed Lana and her Del-Reydiantism.

Stoplight De-Lite and JFK, still some of my favorite leaks to date; SDL is an instant pick-me-up whenever I need it. Summer Wine; it is one of my favorite songs and I was over the moon when I saw that Lana did a cover with Barrie. Inspired me to make one of my hulahoops in tribute to it. TV in Black & White, definitely one of Lana's best songs, and it has been some of my best company since its leaking date. Black Beauty, AFFA and Starry Eyed, because despite the circumstances, BB (and?) AFFA were very beautiful, and generally, these three tracks are just wonderful. Your Band is All the Rage because I got a little mopey over the summer, and when this song leaked in August, it was such a nice healing period for me. True Love on the Side because it's one of Lana's sexiest songs and I have such a blast listening to it every time. Honestly, a good handful of the leaks were some of my favorite Lana Memories of 2013, but aside from that... The release of Tropico, The announcement of ULTRAVIOLENCE, "It's coming you little bitch," and this soundcheck because I'm still praying it's an upcoming ULTRAVIOLENCE track.

Lana Del Rey Nominated for 2 Grammys!
Wryta Thinkpiece replied to Manueldelrey's topic in Awards & Nominations
If you don't care for an artist's work, fine, but for humanity's sake, do not contribute to the toxicity of verbal abuse and the disparaging of someone's worth as a person. I love Lorde's music, and I happen to think she's very pretty; I don't necessarily care for some of her views, but as I've said numerous times, she is seventeen and still has some more introspection and experience to undergo before she can articulate them differently. And if anyone here says there's no opinion they had at sixteen or seventeen that they could've thought out more thoroughly or projected in a different way, I'm more than confident to call you a liar. Never mind that, holy shit with these comments about her looks. What are you guys doing? Seriously. What are you guys doing? You don't have to agree on whether or not you find beauty in Lorde, but some of you are really making me sick with the "comparisons" and the use of words like "ugly" with the intent of being demeaning. It's also quite ironic when you think about how Lana herself has been subjected to very cruel scrutiny about her looks and talent, and as her fanbase, you guys have seen as much of it in reviews, tabloids and rants, yet you're doing it to another human being. I thought the majority of Little Monsters were bad—some of you belong being associated with them with the lack of compassion and common decency you exhibit. Attacking a child's appearance and then on another Tuesday or Sunday want to talk about "it gets better," or "everybody is beautiful." Get of here with that hypocrisy. Especially if you've been criticized yourself and especially if you're a "woman" and you're doing it. Go outside and get some fucking sun. ON THAT NOTE. Am I the only one with a lot of hope that Lana's going to get at least one of the awards? Honestly, there's been a lot of talk about her where I live, and almost everybody knows Y&B. I hardly hear about Skyfall or any of the other nominees. I'd like to think Lana's going to get this one. 2014 is going to be a great year for Geminis. -

Oh, no, I know that, @@SitarHero! I was just saying sometimes I entertain the thought of the lyrics being different, only a random thought!

I think should be honestly. It's so, so fitting.

I just love how during the bridge verses, she talks about working at different restaurants while traveling around the USA with her beau, Ruby Tuesdays, the Corner Café—and he's always popping up and visiting her while she's waitressing. Makes me think of how stressful working in the food industry could be and how nice and at-ease it could make someone when their romantic interest shows up and lightens the mood to make the shift a little easier to get by. Such a fucking precious song. Definitely one of Lana's best.

Sometimes, like with JFK, I still hear "he got away," which for me, really changes the meaning of the song when I listen to it. The whole song is so beautiful, but there is something about that last verse that just fills me with this weird, conflicting feeling of hope and solemness and I don't even fucking know what. It just leaves me brooding the way I do when I listen to Sucré's "Hiding Out," the way this song and Hiding Out end is so strange on the heart but so perfect.

How I haven't wept uncontrollably while listening to this song yet, I don't even know. My heart swells up every listen and really thinking about the lyrics really puts me beside myself. They are so sweet, but so goddamn sad.
