i think these are some of her best vocal takes - don't know why her voice sounds so unbelievably good / bluesy / nuanced / perfect during this session in particular

sometimes i forget what she's capable of. this was back in 2012 when the majority of people still hated her ass. the interviewer was so shady here -- he was cold as fuck and refused to compliment her in any way (despite those vocals); instead, he said her band sounded great

you know you're truly fucking good at something when people find ways to skirt around the compliments lmao

Lana's first album was pretty jazzy rock music, and she's always expressed an interest in jazz. I mean, she has "Nina" and "Billie" tattooed over her heart.

Tbh, Gaga was just trying to win critics over through a collaboration with Tony, but ended up with a collection of mediocre cover songs that sound more like Macy's elevator music than jazz.

National Anthem? Ain't nobody got time for dat!

Anyway she's still touring Paradise. I think that was part of her contract and she can't just start touring UV without having time to prepare anything for it. I think we all have to wait for the real Ultraviolence Tour to start. And honestly, I'm glad she's not performing too many new songs and iis saving them for her next tour (Hopefully there is one).

I don't understand the notion that if you can't sing due to some vocal ailment, the rest of your life can't possibly march on as usual?
  5. delreyschild liked a post in a topic by MahaMaha in Discussion: Is Lana an ICON?
Off topic but when Nina Dobrev and Trey Songz presented best rock video at the VMAs and she mentioned the "inventive new vibe of Lorde", FMWUTTT started playing as imaginary background music in my head. Nothing against that little girl but it's like Marina said: after all those Lady Gagas there comes Lana doing nothing and being fascinated. I think that's also why she wasn't successful before because people needed to be sick of a redhead Rihanna, blue haired Katy and whatever fucking hair Nicki had. Now they are all coming back to a much more natural look, because crazy isn't cute no more. And if Video Games and BTD wouldn't have been successful, who knows if Lorde would have been able to put out an album or at least not the kind she released. It would have probably ended up much more Indie, kind of like Love Club? She said she listened to BTD while writing the album and you can tell she did.. but if that would not have been successful in the first place the Record label would've pushed her in another direction, maybe go all Pop like her BFF Taylor Swift. Sorry for ranting but I hate when people think Lorde's the icon here..

    Bel Air

Children's voices, echoes of the time when the ego was still weak and the light of the soul shone more brightly. Here she comes again, emerging from the mists of the unconscious where the ego has relegated her for an age. No longer deterred by his defenses, for the time is ripe for them to meet again, in that place of lush and sublime beauty, in your vehicle of flesh and bones, where spirit and matter unite.

I think this is her very essence: equal parts art and science. I think LDR as a persona/identity is meant to be someone who lives poetically, driven only by emotion and whims, makes her 'life an art', etc.

But the reality is she would not be where she is if she were just a wide-eyed innocent, dreaming about life from her window sill all day, or being led around by boys. Lizzy Grant is the shadow master and commander of the LDR concept; she dreams big but she is also a doer, the ruler of her own destiny. (Her critics who think she has no agency need to wake up —  who in pop music right now has more control of their own vision than her ?)   She is very calculating, knowing, and aware of how to give form to her dreams. It surely all starts with intuition and artistic intention and emotion, but then Science Lizzy kicks in — the one who researches, studies, analyzes, experiments w/ a hypothesis, puts in art in action. A good creative director is always equally artistic and scientific, and Lizzy herself has hinted at this in interviews.

I also think someone like this is naturally driven to explore esoteric and marginalized philosophy/psychology/cultural topics; I'm sure she's even aware of Crowley, Theosophy, and the like. Not sure if I buy she was in 'a cult', but the chronology specifics don't matter so much, the essence of how it shaped her does. What's exciting is that she can bring these super niche topics into the warmth of the spotlight, even if she has to paint broad strokes to do so. I honestly can't think of someone else so widely known and loved that is able to pull this off in the 21st century. Maybe Grimes, but with her, it's literally the Wiki-meets-Tumblr remix version of everything. Young artists everywhere should be inspired that women like Lizzy are finding ways to make the outre and strange palatable.

God damn. Why does Lana have all these interesting and mysterious lives she has lived in her 20 something years of living and I'm just on my computer reading about them?

as a marketing and Advertising student I can say Lana is (probably)  fully aware of the principles of authenticity. The first rule of authenticity is to never proclaim yourself authentic in any way. That said every person personal experience is authentic because we are all authentic human beings, no experience is equal to different people, not even sharing the same dish at a restaurant. The experience you feel is internal and all the external is not authentic.  In that sense also no experience is really authentic , not even going to camp in the jungle since someone designed the paper map or GPS you will use and someone designed the car, bike, plane that will take you there.

Since music these days is treated and sold as a commodity all rules of business and society applies to art in most cultures, being US the epitome of culture sold as a commodity, as a service (Itunes...serves you music....internet serves you a music store...goes on...) authenticity and all it's sub categories (Fake - Fake ; Fake-Real; Real-Fake; Fake-Fake and Real - Real) are probably under Lana's radar since her teens...her dad been a advertiser and all and her being clearly a good advertiser and a student of human behavior is fair to assume she's fully aware the search for authenticity is doomed from the start.

IMo Lana is a storyteller and she really gets into the character she's playing/writing about.

I always end up liking the whole damn thing... it happened with BTD and Paradise so it'll happen with UV
This is so sick I've never been this much into an artist as to like entire albums, Lana has something really catchy about her music, not to mention her image and persona

The bizzare thing is that you dismiss a lyrical content because of one verse. That was done against her by many "critics"who singled out a word or a verse to dismiss an entire song. It's just LAME. "My boyfriend's in a band / He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed" its like the verses in VG:
    "Swingin' in the backyard
Pull up in your fast car
    Whistlin' my name
    Open up a beer" etc.
they are describing a moment with significance from her relationship, a starting point to a story.

Wait for the entire lyrical content of the song to judge it

    My boyfriend's in the band
He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed
I've got feathers in my hair
I get down to Beat poetry

    I'm a Brooklyn baby
    I'm a Brooklyn baby

These are the lyrics that I found from BB. What is wrong with them? If you don't like her themes jump of the Lana train because it can happen that she will never change those themes: desperate love, abusive relationships, death, doomed fate, love for the beat poets etc. I think that these are great themes to sing about, i would rather cringe at some wannabe "social thinkers" in pop/rock music. I don't see Paradise as a lyrical regress from BTD and certainly UV is more of a sonic departure from her previous work than a lyrical one. That said I enjoy the "sonic monster" that UV is gradually revealing and certainly the lyrics helps in creating a mood  and a visual context for the music. If you wanna read some deep shit lyrically you have to do better than pop or rock music. I cringe at people who expect Shakespearean lyrics from a pop act. A Wagner libretto shits on Pink Floyd entire lyrical content, get real, this is pop music and Lana is the ”queen of sadcore”, this is her genre and there are some limitations sonically and lyrically. (btw The Beatles were quite repetitive at the beginning of their career and that didn't stop them to be considered the greatest band in history). Maybe she'll change her perspective for the next albums but UV wasn't the right time for that. The music and the lyrics are just great together (UV will take some shit for the lyrics but I like the mood of the song, it's great live)

According to Lana Del Rey herself (simultaneously our primary and least trustworthy source), Ultraviolence is coming this May, soon after she performs at Coachella!

Additionally, she said, "[Ultraviolence is] so good that it made me forget about the last record. I just, I'm in love with it. It's really, I don't know, there's something about it. I have that feeling about it. I have that romantic feeling about it."
