Look, i understand her visuals this era, i really do, im one of the few on here who liked the WC video, clearly the music is coming first more than the visuals.....however, the video really is just boring beyond words. First Lana video i genuinely dont like.

Alice BrightSky finally released her album Box of Me several years in the making and including the song "Lover's Fate" on which Lizzy Grant sang background vocals and I posted about back in December. Alice was a fellow musician in the Williamsburg music scene with Lizzy and won third place in the WLSC 2006 in which Lizzy competed. You can listen to previews of her album and buy it here on CD Baby.

In my sleuthing, I've listened to music by a number of artists I wanted to contact. I do this for a couple reasons. It seems rude, somehow, to contact an artist and only ask them about another artist's work. I like to have something positive and genuine to say about their own work. And as Mae West said, "Flattery will get you everywhere." Often I'll only listen until I find something nice to say. That didn't take long with Alice, but I kept listening anyway because I love all her songs, especially "Pry Me Away", "I Am", "Up Up and Away", "Tie and Untie", and of course, "Lover's Fate". I really like her songwriting and voice. Her music has sort of a 90s girl-with-a-guitar Lilith fair folk rock feel to me, and I mean that in a good way. She reminds me a bit of Ani DiFranco, except I like Alice better. She was super nice and friendly when I contacted her and really helpful with Early Shows questions, so I hope some of you will show the forum's appreciation by buying her album and get to hear some good music as well.

Have you heard JLO's remixes of Ain't It Funny, I'm Real and I'm Gonna Be Alright?

So glad she even doesn't remember the existance of Lucky Ones, but I'll die for TIWMUG live, but the 2nd demo I mean, Lana dressed like a hooker and dancing like Nicki Minaj

Okay no, but I would like to hear that song live, specially the catchy-poppy demos

    1. How did you discover Lana? When and What Era?
I discovered Lana on Youtube some time in September of 2011. I guess this time conicides with the Born To Die era.
    2. First song(s)?
The first song I heard by Lana Del Rey was Blue Jeans.
    3.what did you think?
I thought it was the greatest song I had heard in a long time. I don't think I had felt this way about any music I had ever listened to aside from the Red Hot Chili Peppers or The Beatles up to this point in my life. Especially in terms of overall released music and what I mean by that is there are songs here and there I love by other artists, but as I kept discovering more of Lana after Blue Jeans each song kept giving me the same feeling I had when I first listened to Blue Jeans. Never before, aside from the two groups mentioned above, have I ever heard so many songs from a singular group/artist with music I actually enjoyed. I guess a good example of this would be found in pop music. Pop artists can rely on that one hit single and then the rest of the album may sound like lesser versions of that particular single or may not even be anywhere near as good, but with Lana it was different and it was beautiful.
    4. Your favourite song(s)?
American or Ride. This may change as the songs being released thus far in Lana's next album are all very good. Or maybe that is simply because the songs are new so I am just feeling it more right now.
    5. Least favourite song(s)?
There are a lot of unreleased songs I have listened to that I really do not like, but as far as what she has released I am not a big fan of Lolita.
    6. What song(s) "grew" on you?
Million Dollar Man and Body Electric. It took me time to think these songs were good. If I do listen to them, I still do not hold them to an equal level to songs like American, but do enjoy them now. Every other song I have heard I instantly enjoyed. Frankly, I think I have come to a point where I love Lana and her music so much that I have a positive bias toward her songs. And just to be clear, I am not trying to discredit her or her music which I believe to be wonderfully amazing, but just saying something I think has happened over time.
    7. Whats your favourite Lana era as of now? (May jailer, Lizzy Grant, Lana Del Rey)
Lana Del Rey. No doubt about it.
    8. Favourite Album(s)?
    Born To Die and Paradise.
    9. Least favourite(s) ?
Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant. There are songs on this album that I enjoy very much, but in answering this question I had to choose something
    10. Favourite song preformed live?
    American
    11. First song/Album purchased/Downloaded?
    Born To Die
    12. Favourite song quote/lyric?
The monologue in the beginning and end of Ride. Or the monologue bit after National Anthem. I really like the chorus in Video Games. I think it's romantic and would not mind having it played at my wedding.

Honestly, why I love Lana so much and a big reason why I spend time here on Lanaboards is because there is so much of what Lana has done that I really enjoy listening to so if I actually took the time to answer these questions in detail, I would probably have a lot more to fill out. And I'm sure many, if not all of us, feel the somewhat similar. Maybe even to a greater degree. I believe it goes beyond the music. And I guess, in my case, the fact that she is an attractive female helps me enjoy everything she does even more since I am a guy so it comes naturally to me.

Evidence that music is completely subjective, that there is no good or bad, right or wrong. It's all an illusion.

For me, Video Games is almost entirely atmosphere. And it's a quintessential L.A. sound. The very first time i heard it, within the first two bars, that was the first thought that came to mind. We all have different reality tunnels, yay.

    Okay, here's my unpopular opinion.

"Carmen" is the best song on Born to Die. If it wasn't for that song I probably wouldn't love Lana as much as I do right now. When I first heard that song, it gave me chills and the image of Felix Cane slowly dropping down the pole as Lana says, "Darlin' Darlin' Doesn't have a problem" is permanently embedded into my mind. "Carmen" is genius lyrically, proudction wise, and the music video is flawless. It's a brilliant song. I've read tons of comments on Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube and other websites that just really hate "Carmen" and wish it was kicked off of Born to Die, I could never picture that. "Carmen" just brings me into a David Lynch film, Laura Palmer's secret life, and even the production screams David Lynch for Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet. It's the one song from Lana that honestly blows me away every time I listen to it. I've replayed it nearly 800 times on my iTunes since I first heard it in May and just can't get enough. It's the one song off Born to Die I relate to, not because I'm a druggie or wild child, but it really experiments with the idea that everybody looks fine on the outside but really is crumbling apart early on in their lives.

It's just my view, "Carmen" will always be the song that saved Born to Die for me. Born to Die and Video Games took me over a month to get into.

no, Carmen's the best. That's why all the boys and girls like her.
But when I listen to "Without You" I see a pregnant Sharon Tate jumping off a diving-board in slow motion. I don't know why.

It's so hard for me to choose between all her songs.

Carmen is an amazing song. It has such a dark feeling to it. I especially love when she sings " The boys, the girls, they all like Carmen". How can she make something so simple into something so beautiful?

She has a talent for doing that. Dreamy, chill, and outer worldly.

The song I first fell in love with was Summertime Sadness one night while laying in bed after a smoke... And I was smitten. I had to find out more about her.

She just has this sweet voice.

I also love Yayo and Radio.

I tried getting tickets and they literally sold out the second. UGH! And most of them are ticket Scalpers. Lana needs to give us another chance that was so unfair

Now that you mention it, it is a little similar. But West Coast (the "I'm feeling hot to the touch..." part) reminds me more of Burning Desire (when she sings "I'm driving fast...").

I find it interesting how some people are already tired of some of Lana's most signature tunes.  One thing I noticed, at least when I listen to her music, is that it helps to be in the right frame of mind. Her music is very cerebral and nothing sounds like it. I don't worship any pop stars but I give credit where it's due and Lana deserves it. She writes amazing music even if some of the same lyrics and ideas show up in multiple songs. Look at Stevie Nicks' songwriting for example, there are constant themes all through her music and it helped her develope her own sound. Lana is doing the same thing, and I hope continues developing her craft. I was listening to Born to Die and Paradise while drivng through the countryside for work today. It was a beautiful Spring day and Lana made it even more wonderful. I still don't think she gets the credit she is due even from some of her "fans." If Lana puts out shit music I will call her on it, but so far I have yet to be disappointed. When the single drops we will all be able to have our say.

I love the title. The only thing I fear is that all the songs on it will be slowish like the ones that leaked. I live for more upbeat Lana tracks.

    PARTITION
In "Partition", the camera takes us inside a palatial estate that almost looks like it could have been the setting for the "Born to Die" video. See the exterior and interior below:

In the first of several scenes curiously similar to ones out of "National Anthem", we find Mrs. Carter seated at an immaculately set table, barely noticed by her rapper husband peering over his newspaper:

In her mind, she embarks on a sexual fantasy. Again she channels Rosalita:

Her rapper husband feels up her leg in a vehicle:

She puts on a show for him, donning a sequined flapper headdress like Lizzy wears in this photo:

Silhouette techniques like something out of "Summertime Sadness" are employed:

Beyoncé pole dances like Lana in Tropico over a sexy French spoken interlude like in "Carmen":

Like A$AP Rocky in "National Anthem", her rapper husband watches her performance voyeuristically, smoking a cigar:

    JEALOUS
Beyoncé is a jealous, jealous, jealous gurrrrrl. This video begins in the same estate reminiscent of "Born to Die" as in "Partition". In one scene, the former Miss Knowles is draped over a pinball machine like Lana in "Ride":

In another we see a "tunnel lined with yellow lights":

    ROCKET
Like "Blue Jeans", "Rocket" opens on a black & white close-up of a reflection of the artist's face in a ripple of water:

Later in each video we watch the artist submerge her face in water in slow motion:

    MINE
Like Lana in the poster for Tropico, we find Beyoncé re-enacting Mary in the Pieta:

Also, is that another Shaun Ross cameo?

    XO
In "XO", Beyoncé orchestrates perhaps the largest NYC land grab since Dutch settlers bought Manhattan Island from Native Americans for 24 bucks, stealing the famed amusement destination from the Queen of Coney Island herself:

    ***FLAWLESS & SUPERPOWER
Since I can't find any Lana plagiarism in either of these videos, I'm just gonna go ahead and assume they must be borrowed from the "Dark Paradise" and "Cola" videos that never materialized. @@Ultraviolence Watch these. One of them may be the closest thing you'll ever get to your precious "Cola" video.

    HEAVEN
Here we have the biggest plot heist since Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds ripped off Gremlins. In "Heaven", Beyoncé portrays a woman mourning her deceased female bff in a series of flashbacks. Sound familiar? Of course it does. It's the plot of Lana's "Summertime Sadness" video. Not content to copycat one Lana video, "Heaven" filches from a few. A shot in a church mirrors the chapel in "Born to Die":

In a flashback, Beyoncé's girlfriend sprays alcohol at a campfire party echoing scenes in "Ride":

And we see her and her gal pal riding in a car like Lana & Jaime King:

She only barely tries to disguise her copying Lana's recitation of the Lord's Prayer in Tropico by saying it in Spanish. Oh, and speaking of Spanish, here's Rosalita yet again:

    BLUE
Sure, there's another "tunnel lined with yellow lights":

    The sequined bra is back:

And she evokes Lizzy's showgirl style:

But most saliently, this song is about Beyoncé's, uh, baby Blue love, the black baby daughter she had with a rapper. What a blatant "National Anthem" ripoff!

    GROWN WOMAN
Last but not least, the video for "Grown Woman" consists of home footage of Beyoncé's childhood performances, a clear homage to Lana's DIY videos.
