Exactly what I think: she's not into hardcore BDSM. I would add that she probably enjoy some role play as well. I can imagine her as a naughty schoolgirl being spanked by her teacher

My attempt to recreate FKA Twigs look was a fail. I spent 2 hours on my hair and I could not achieve something similar with my hair texture, without practicing before. I over estimated my talent in making French braids lol. When I found a way to make it look like a French braid, I put my hair in two buns on top of my head and it didn't look good with the shape of my face, so I gave up and went to the party with a blow dried huge afro, which was not really a costume, but it was the first time I was wearing my hair that way and it had a big effect and I might be tempted to wear that style in my everyday life. It was a bit of a test (using Halloween as an excuse "Oh, this...? No I'm not wearing my hair like that normally, Ha! Ha! It's JUST a costume") to know if I was comfortable managing the stares of people and I guess it was fine. People on the streets smile at me and I don't know if they are actually mocking me, that's what bothers me a bit. Anyway, this is a Halloween Costume Contest and I wouldn't consider my look as a costume, so I won't post a pic here, but I'll post it on the POY thread

I can't picture her being into the sado stuff, but I think she's into light bondage and submission.

I first heard of Lana in Feb. 2012. I was eating breakfast out while reading a very serious article in the local newspaper about Adele requiring apologize from Karl Lagerfeld for saying she was fat. In his quote, there was a mention of Lana Del Rey, which I've never heard of before. Since I really liked Adele at that time (still like her, but I'm not a "real fan"), I wanted to know who was this mysterious girl that was mentioned in the same sentence with Adele. I went on youtube and saw the BTD video. I was impressed and not that impressed at the same time. I though the video lacked authenticity, it had a "too calculated" feeling to it. I though her voice was very unique tho. I liked her resonant tone, very emotive and expressive but nonchalant at the same time.

About the character, I wasn't so sure... then I heard about SNL and all the hate. I though people were really harsh. I was reading the comments on youtube and understood that she was quite controversial. I tried to understand why she was lying about her lips when it was obvious to me that they were not natural. Then I found out about her lies (or people misinterpretation of her). I started to look at paparazzi pictures as I wanted to see how she was in her everyday life compared to professional photo shoot (I was very impressed with her aesthetics) and I found out she was not pretentious as I though she was. She even kiss her fans on the lips, ARE YOU KIDDING ME BLBLBLBLBLLBLBLBL!!! She cried on stage!! She's human <3

After watching on youtube BTD and Video Games on repeat, I decided to download the album. I loved Summertime Sadness. Then I paid attention to OTTR lyrics and I was hooked. I was so pleased to find an artist that went through a similar lifestyle as mine. I went to her old ugly website to find out her tour dates, but there was nothing. I was disappointed. That was in Sept. 2013 I think. Then in April, she announced her North American tour and I was euphoric. I found out this board and I wanted to know more about her live performances as I heard some negative...

Now I can say I'm a real fan. I never loved a singer like that before. I get obsessed with movies a lot more than music.

I'm so bad with music styles... I wish I could find a site that would explain in details, with audio examples, what is what. Music styles for dummies or something like that. That would help musically retarded people like me to better understanding why Lana is not doing jazz-inspired music.

I could download old jazz albums, but I don't want to. I'm curious about music being analyzed with word.

I agree Lana must have been inspired (obviously) by Blanche Dubois for Carmen (relying on the kindness of strangers) and I think she was also inspired by Holly Golightly, the main character of Breakfast at Tiffany's. I also see a bit of Scarlett O'Hara in that song as well.

Holly uses the word darling all the time. The liquor's top shelf might be inspired by one of the movie scene (check video below). She's known for her irresistible charm, her vivacious and bubbly personality, but she has a dark past. She is a sad, extremely confused and vulnerable girl. She's fooling everyone, specially her male admirers, by pretending she's having fun with them so she can make a living (they gave her $50 for the powder room, $50 for her cab…). In reality, she calls them rats and doesn't give a shit about them. She has the loveliest cartoon eyes. She was in her late teens. Diamonds are a symbol. She was living at night, getting back home at sunrise. She often uses French expressions in the movie as her old agent thought learning French would smooth out her redneck accent (the interlude is in French). We see her changing clothes and put on party dresses, applying lipstick in a cab, singing a song (Moon River).

It is not shown in the movie, but in the novella Holly is fond of marijuana (getting high for free) and she's also bisexual (the boys, the GIRLS, they all like Carmen).

Finally, I think she got inspired by the strip club scene in the movie. Watch the second video (the intro) then listen to Mermaid Motel (the intro). Edit: and look at the stripper dress... quite mermaidy (just realized it!)

I knew that melody in Mermaid Motel was familiar! Ugh I love Breakfast At Tiffany's and I loved your interpretation Kiki! This turns Carmen into a whole different thing, at least for me... I mean besides the clear Lolita inspiration all these references you mention are on point.

I don't if this has been mentioned / discussed elsewhere, and I do know it's kinda speculative, but bear with me...

Blanche Dubois. You know, of 'A Streetcar Named Desire'? I've recently re-watched the film and it got me thinking.

From Wikipedia - "(...) the former Southern belle has a lurid past (a marriage to a young homosexual who committed suicide when she discovered his secret; notorious sexual promiscuity; ongoing alcoholism, etc.) as well as genuine spiritual idealism and refinement."

Also her attraction to violent and "wrong" men / abusive relationships, the tragic death of her first love (albeit in very different circumstances), her insecurity and absolute need to be adored by everyone (especially men), and last but not least Blanche's iconic quote "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers", which Lana could be referencing in the Ride monologue as well as in Kinda Outta Luck and Carmen.

Carmen in particular sounds like it could have been at least partly inspired by her or a Blanche-like character --- Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem / Lying to herself cause her liquor's top shelf / It's alarming honestly how charming she can be / Fooling everyone, telling how she's having fun (...) Baby's all dressed up, with nowhere to go / That's the little story of the girl you know / Relying on the kindness of strangers / Tying cherry knots, smiling, doing party favours / Put your red dress on, put your lipstick on --- not to mention the little French interlude.

At the very least she's maybe a character Lana somewhat relates to / feels inspired by? I don't know, maybe it's too much of a stretch, but what do you guys think?

Backward? Maybe there's too much reverb but Lana's vocals are SO much better on UV. She sings with so much more confidence and her voice really opens up, whereas on BTD she sings very proper to the point where a lot of songs lack emotion vocally (not lyrically though).

Ultraviolence. This girl I like made me listen to Summertime Sadness, I liked the lyrics. I checked Born to Die out, but it didn't really grab my attention and I concluded that her music isn't my style. But I heard West Coast, and I liked it a lot, more than anything I've heard from her before.

I'm not a huge fan, but I like a lot of her lyrics and I'd like to read more about her concepts and that's why I registeres here today.

I'm still not sure about the painting... it will depend on the hair result. Mine is not as long, but the freak that I am has been collecting her own dead hair since 3 years (to make old fashion rats), so I think I could use it to add some volume to the braids. If I can make it a statement, I will skip the makeup. I'm going to a party and I don't want people to think I just changed my hair for the occasion lol.

I found this picture. It's more realistic and it helps me visualize how it was done:
