Agreed, and that was one of my biggest problems with that article. It just seemed so superfluous and pretentious to spend 498572309572390572 words comparing her to Joni, Tori, Leonard, and 55 other people.

The whole point of sis is that she isn't quite like anyone else, and I don't think she is trying to be. So the woman who wrote it might be a highbrow academic, but she still completely missed the point, imo. As @@longtimeman said on the other thread, it really seemed like the author brought up all these other artists just to demonstrate her musical knowledge, but there was no reason to do so.

There was also no reason to give readers an itemised list of the rubbish at Venice Beach, but she did that, too. As I said, pretentious and superfluous.

And as I said, there are plenty of people - on both sides - hurling insults rather than thoughtfully-constructed arguments. Mess.

I desperately want to know what the thought process was behind it.

It sounds like it might've been inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" or some shit, which I would've been soooo here for.

I kind of like bird world, it’s very sixties. She should’ve saved that title and kept it to herself and used it later.

To be fair, it's going both ways.

I, and others, defended sis without using insults, and by attacking the article rather than the author, and the consensus from all of her PhD-toting pals is that we, and sis, are stupid, entitled millennials who take can't criticism, etc. As in, we must be wrong because we're not 45.

I mean but how many tweets have been calling lana stupid and airheaded. It’s like we’re regressing back to 2012. If this woman does not have enough balls to handle being called fat by some tweens on twitter maybe she should pick another career field. I have a hard time feeling bad for any art critic getting criticized. She made some low blows. Her journalist and critic followers made even more low blows. They should expect it back. Anthony Fantano has been brutal with his lana reviews in the past, and had to deal with the wrath of annoying twitter stans. Don’t forget about all the other artist he’s critized with rabid fan bases. He’s also had artist directly call him. He’s just an example I pulled out of my ass, but you get my point. If you can’t handle the heat get out the kitchen.

(I initially did this as an addition to the post above, but it makes more sense as a separate post).

I hate the pushback the author is getting on twitter and social media, and think that fans hunting in packs are the ugliest thing that the internet has bred, but at the same time, the essay is yet another chapter in this awful 'cultural criticism' movement standing in as music criticism that bloomed in the early nineties (maybe a bit earlier too, but that's when I remember it starting). It was championed by people like Greil Marcus, who believed that the difference between them and the artists they were writing about was that a) they were way smarter, and b) their insights were much more interesting, and it was only because the general public was stupid that people preferred to listen to Nirvana's 'Nevermind', than read his 10,000 word Masters thesis that talked about how Cobain wasn't as much of an authentic artist as Neil Young, or a bunch of other guys from 20 years earlier.

For example, in this essay she references the Leonard Cohen song 'I'm Your Man', more as a 'gotcha' to show "see! I know where Lana got this reference from!". But there's no discussion whatsoever about what the Leonard Cohen song is about (he half jokes that he's so in love with the woman he's singing to, that he would do anything for her, from being a doctor to 'wear(ing) a (leather) mask for you"), and how Lana has played with the same imagery throughout her work (Video Games; Without You), and here is using it both ironically (she's taking on the socially understood masculine attributes of protecting and dominant) as well as in a heartfelt way (she genuinely does want to look after him). But if you want to get a B+ in sociology, all you need to do is mention the precursors and suggest that you know what you would have said if you'd gotten around to it.

But was it even an attack? If sis had said something really awful then I'd agree, but she did not.

If you write an opinion piece, then others, including the subject, are surely entitled to have an opinion on it.

That article was embarrassing, though. She spent so much time comparing sis to everyone else that she completely missed the point of sis and her music. It's also pretentious as fuck.

Imagine being tasteless enough to write an entire paragraph attempting to drag Cinnamon Girl.
