Fun story - in 1991, I was in a band that was trying to think of a new name, because our other names were either garbage or had already been taken. I piped up 'How about we call ourselves Arcadia?' The guitarist looked at me like I was an idiot, and said, "you mean like the Duran Duran side project?" Now I can call him up and say, "No, like the Lana Del Rey single, JERK!"

"It was weird how that actual title came to me. I was riffing over a couple of chords that Jack was playing for the title track, which ended up being called “Norman Fucking Rockwell.” It was kind of an exclamation mark: so this is the American dream, right now. This is where we’re at—Norman fucking Rockwell. We’re going to go to Mars, and Trump is president, all right. Me and Jack, we just joke around constantly about all the random headlines we might see that week, so it’s a slight cultural reference. But it’s not a cynical thing, really. To me, it’s hopeful, to see everything as a little bit funnier. The chaos of the culture is interesting, and I’m hopeful that there’s room for there to be some movement and excitement within it."

Okay wow, now that I've had time to process this, I just want to say how incredible this is. In my opinion, Hope is her best song. I know some people may disagree me with there, but aside from the song displaying her best lyricism, her vocal delivery is perfect, and the simple piano really highlights what she is trying to say. I think any extra production would've taken away from the feeling and meaning of the song. It's a masterpiece, and LDR in her purest, rawest form. The song is so intimate, and this really is the perfect video for it. Rather than having an overproduced professional video, just having a visit with Lana at home through the lens of her iPhone couldn't capture the intimacy of Hope any better. This is truly amazing. So brilliant. I'm so happy she shared this with us. What a treasure x

Speaking of Ultraviolence, this isn't so much an unpopular opinion, as a perspective I've never seen shared before. The cover of The Other Woman is incredible for a few reasons, but one that stands out to me is that she flips the meaning of the song without changing any words, simply by how she sings it. In the original, the first part - where the life of the 'Other Woman' is made to seem glamorous in comparison with the wife, for the reason that she has the freedom that the latter does not, while having the gifts and excitement - are sung sadly, while the last part - where the Other Woman is seen as being an outcast and alone, are sung with a 'fuck you', triumphant sort of attitude. Lana swaps these around, as you would expect, as they're sung from the perspective of the OW, and not from the wife, and it starts triumphant and ends in tragedy. To me, it really shows her ability as an actor and performer of lyrics, which is often ignored.
For more evidence of that, watch any early live version of 'Blue Jeans', where she sings the line 'love you more, than those bitches before', not as though she's performing a song, but as though the feeling has just occurred to her.

I strongly recommend that if you haven't read it, give a good read to the article from mtv linked in the first post. It answers a lot of questions about the album and makes some great points about Lana's artistic and business acumen. It's my theory that the record sold very very few copies (something closer to 100-200), based on how long it took most of us to get hold of an original digital copy, and the fairly low sales for independent releases at the time. I'd love to have this confirmed or refuted definitively, but it would help to explain why it was so easy to suppress at the time.

Read it closer - it's not a contradiction at all. The second quote is about people around her convincing her she should have a name other than a band name, or 'Lizzy Grant', while the first quote is about where the specific name 'Lana Del Rey' came from. (It's illogical that 'a series of managers and lawyers' would have somehow collectively come up with the name 'Lana Del Rey').

sorry you had to go through that :/ this show does a great job in delivering the characters' emotions for sure. I'm not sure whether I love or hate how the real villain is the patriarchy and the men of Gilead, but they still made the most notable villains women - Aunt Lydia and Serena, like you mentioned. yet, we are supposed to like Nick or feel sorry for him since hE LOveS jUne  I really hoped that a show like this would stay clean of all the love triangle/ship serving shit, like women have stripped out from their human rights and are sex slaves by law, there is so much more that they could work with
