I know people are tired of piano at this point but I honestly wish Arcadia was a piano ballad (or at least somewhat minimal like the first chorus) and that she added the baroque production to Beautiful or Violets. I really loved how the preview felt when she first released it. The production has grown on me since its release but the piano already sounds so lush and gorgeous as it is.

I really like the iPhone reference, too, in Sweet Carolina (as well as the swearing, but that's maybe for a different reason). The song's vocals, production, and style (e.g., melody) could have been a hit in the 1920s-50s, so the lyrics date stamp the actual date of the release pretty specifically to the 21st century. Hence, future historians of ancient earth (who will hopefully be human) will not be confused about the song's release era, if they only have the song's style to work with. Also, date stamping the song by referencing a device that understands timestamps seems auto-recursively clever to me.

I actually don't mind the "iPhone 11 / Fuck you Kevin" line in Sweet Carolina. It's obviously just a cute little joke between her and Chuck and I find the delivery of it to be really sweet (you can tell that she's smiling as she sings it)

i think ur really reducing what @IanadeIrey said + memes surrounding her music are REAL boring; i think lana's music deserves to be treated w a lot more dignity and like... a critical thought + it's not gatekeeping to say ppl should perhaps not perpetuate tired uncritical stereotypes re her music lol

What I said applies to a very specific group of people and refers to a larger cultural problem, rather than a couple witty jokes here and there like you seem to think I am taking an issue with. I myself as an OG fan know exactly the overblowing on Tumblr you're talking about and I had a disdain for it then, too, so it's not exclusive to just new fans –– it is a type of fan that is just more visible now. I, too, didn't relate to the extremities on their part in terms of trivializing or blaming Lana for their deep-seated issues, but I never thought something was wrong with me for not relating to that. I knew then and I know now how a large portion of listeners (of any artist) instinctively project their issues onto the artist with whom they resonate.

I agree that music taste indicates parts of your personality, but let me be clear that I was referring to the generalizations people make based on said music taste, the rampage of which only continues to stigmatize topics at the risk of marginalizing mostly women. People poking fun at women for having 'daddy issues' because they listen to Lana points to a bigger cultural problem where we blame women for psychological distress caused by their emotionally or physically absent fathers. Lana is not to blame for someone's psychological issues. The reality is that those issues were already there and, perhaps, Lana is being used as a scapegoat. And that's not to fully vilify the fans, either – I can recognize where those behaviours come from and feel sympathetic that they have to manipulate the music like that. But I don't have to excuse it.

Perhaps that sounds like 'gatekeeping' – but to that, I would encourage you to see the nuance in which I initially made that post.

i don't even understand this... how could you possibly have daddy issues from listening to a lana song? you can't get daddy issues from a song, it happens when the relationship with the father is strained/absent and it affects you emotionally/mentally as well as the way you see relationships, anybody who's saying they got daddy issues from a lana song already had daddy issues in the first place or don't know what daddy issues actually are, which of course, is sad because it stigmatizes daddy issues and it's very misinforming, i really dislike when people act like lana's music "ruined their life", like, NO, that was your choice, leave lana's music out of it because i gurantee you that you don't even understand it

I'm so glad you said this and I loved reading it  Obviously everyone will relate to or connect to a song in whatever way they feel is applicable, which is fine, but it gets to a point with Lana where people start to blame her for their problems because of her music. And this blaming tends to come from a complete misunderstanding of the material. It's not Lana's fault that you have daddy issues because she wrote Cola lol. I think the song I have the biggest issue with the misinterpretation of is Ultraviolence. I hate the way that people have turned that song into romanticizing/being pro-abuse when it's quite literally the opposite. The way that people talk about AKA is super weird to me too. I see people on TikTok all the time saying that you shouldn't listen to it because of reasons I'm pretty sure they just made up

I’m totally going for the throat with this one but… I genuinely don’t mind if Lana works with Antonoff again. NFR and Chemtrails brought out the perfect marriage between poetry and musicality for Lana and those projects are responsible for Lana finally being heralded as one of the best singer-songwriters working today/alive - that counts to something. Sure, those albums aren’t as ballsy as Ultraviolence or as sonically adventurous as Honeymoon but the sonic landscape in NFR and COCC are very very VERY intricate and cohesive. It may not sound as bombastic as the aforementioned albums or BTD/Paradise/LFL but imo the universe that is built from those albums expands a lot more than all of their predecessors (specially in NFR’s case). I’m a NFR/HM hoe (clearly) but even COCC is a very succinct and coherent piece of work that makes tons of sense after NFR (while being different as well!).

I know Lana and Antonoff can make something new and exciting because if there’s one thing we can’t deny is that Antonoff will get on board with anything Lana decides to do and help her achieve her vision amd build a whole universe from it. I’m not sure the BB producers (with the exception of Zach Dawes) have that capability.

Whenever I encounter something online — usually a Tik Tok video, or an Instagram post — that kind of makes fun of Lana, or oftentimes, a post where a fan will say something about a track/album and attach it to some cringeworthy archetype or an experience they’ve had, I can’t help but feel some sense of shame — almost like the way they go about talking about Lana’s catalogue bastardizes the music. I feel there’s a new wave of fans that don’t really get the music, (which out of context, may sound kind of pretentious), but the reality is that people are severely adding to the negative discourse surrounding Lana’s music, often latently creating hierarchies or suggestions about what kind of person you are based on your favourite album — and not in a fun personality quiz way, but in a weird way that cheapens what each record’s themes are. And that feeds journalists’ uninformed “critiques” and interpretive-portrayals of Lana’s records. They’re getting these opinions from the culture (the fans who participate in the platforms that enable said culture).

I take particular notice to fans who say that AKA is a record about “grooming” or “glamorizes trauma”, deeming it unlistenable. Or those who attach Ultraviolence to a wave of Tumblr content that is superficial and vapid, compared to the record, which is anything but.

I get that it’s not done in bad faith, but it’s just so…careless. But it’s also these same fans that make blatant statements about Lana’s appearance over 10+ years because she’s — according to them —  overcome habits related to her health (when in reality, Lana has never commented on any such thing).

It’s this kind of rhetoric that contributes to misinformation, too. We’re in an age where the boundaries between celebrities and followers are so undefined, that it’s easy to say something so absentminded about someone and have it spread like a wildfire.

Luckily, I don’t see this on LanaBoards at all — and the rare times it has happened, everyone is quick to shut it down lol.

Just some thoughts this evening 💭 I can’t help but feel the need to defend the integrity of the music when I see content like this online. I’m not saying I absolutely know the complete backstory to Lana’s music or have complete insight into her thoughts - but I also know that it’s never as vulgar or flippant as some make it out to be.

I feel like Lana stans only hype up her unreleased songs because they are unreleased. If she had actually released them, people would ignore most of them(there are a few exceptions). For example, I remember people always talking about Cherry Blossom and Living Legend before, but they are now two of the least streamed songs on the album.

i think violet bent backwards over the grass deserves to be counted as an album. its more of a proper album than paradise and it often gets counted. violet had its own proper release and its own full era (not tied to another album/era like paradise was). even cotcc&bb didn't get proper eras. i think lana would expect us to count violet as equivalent to her other albums too

I love how Lana goes from depraved nocturnal portishead celeb coke queen with DBJAG and then follows it up with rustic contemporary folk Lincoln Nebraska campfire song NAWWAL she’s wild

'violet bent backwards over the grass' is such a beautiful record even if she doesn't sing on it. i connect so deeply to lana's poetry, both the deep poems & the cute ones. and her speaking voice is so soothing and i love the parts where she adds a little extra emphasis to some lines. and of clurse the instumentals are so atmospheric & lynchian. its just so precious to me. like an old friend. and i love the book too but there's just something so emotional about listening to the record. i will never be able to fully communicate how grateful i am for this album and i'm really looking forward to her next spoken word album especially if it has more longer unhinged poems bc those are really something special.

The lyrics of the song are pretty ordinary, but I suspect that there is a certain intention behind it. Just as she presents herself in the video as an innocent country girl. Behind it is probably the desire for a simple, uncomplicated life, like many people have living in the city.
