Another problem of today’s state of the world : more and more people have to vote strategically and not with alignement with their own convictions just to block the worst option. I don't see much wrong with her candidacy, she seems to be the best possible Democrat. The only problem might be that she's not close enough to the people and that she might have campaigned on the wrong issues, instead of issues that appeal also to people in rural America.

Oops, you’re right, I guess those states tightened up a bit, plus the Google search I was using was only showing the top two 3rd party candidates until you hit the dropdown.

This was one of the weirdest takeaways. I’m not really sure why. Maybe the pandemic played a role? People were bored out of their minds and voted in droves in 2020?

I do wish they had an open primary. Maybe her run was just too short for Americans to get to know and trust her? I think Biden would have done even worse, though. Shapiro would have probably done worse. The Dems are screwed.

No Democrat would’ve won this. This was a resounding referendum on the economy, and not the one measured by the S&P, but by how much the average $50k a year person feels like they have left over at the end of the month.

Most of the Dems seem tone deaf to this. It’s not all raw numbers and metrics. I heard commentators and such bragging that inflation was down. Yeah, the rate of inflation was down, but if grocery costs go up 20% one year and only 5 more % the next year (making up numbers), that’s still a lot higher than they were two years prior. 
 

Wages may be up on average, but the damn federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up in like a decade. Hell, I’m not living paycheck to paycheck, but my mortgage went up like 25% and not even considering other expenses, but my wages only went up 1% this year. Just an anecdotal example and don’t get me wrong, I voted for Harris. Trump will not be good for the economy, at least not people on the lower end of the financial spectrum.

 

If Dems had come out harder and tried to relate to and speak to the lower/middle class, they could have done better. It’s a systematic problem. Politicians are in bubbles and as dumb and dangerous as Trump is, he’s great at making half of the country think he’s going to help them. (Spoiler, he’s not going to)

Biden was indeed too sleepy, he didn’t really have a presence and was way past his sell by date and this lead to decline in enthusiasm for the democrats.  Trump wins mostly by his charisma and presence,  he has an imposing personality and confidence that pulls the wool over the average persons eyes. Kamala a Women of colour was the wrong choice, I feel a male would have faired better.

True. It’s deeply troubling that he’s the oldest president elect ever, yet he somehow still wins in these categories. If you actually watch his rallies and read the transcripts, he sounds like a deranged lunatic most of the time. Imagine what he’ll sound like in 3-4 years, considering his cognitive state has been in steady decline.

If you're a hispanic voter in the US and voted for Trump, don't bitch or moan when he deports you. 

 

If you voted for Trump because of the economy, don't bitch and complain when gas prices and food prices are even more unstable.

 

If you're a woman who voted for Trump, don't complain when your husband beats you and there are no protections for you anymore. You chose that. 

 

If you're a gay person who voted Trump, don't be upset when you lose your job solely based on your sexual orientation because you CHOSE this. 

 

In the meantime, I might leave LB for a few weeks to better understand how to leave the US and quickly. I don't want to be here for a Trump presidency again. 

 

Oh and might I add -- if your daughter gets r*ped and is stuck giving birth to a baby she never wanted or planned to have or even gave her consent to conceive in the first place - pay her child support. You chose this for her.

In hindsight, Dems messaging was probably too smug. If you look at the education breakdown, the “well actually, according to economists the economy is doing great” line probably didn’t land with a demographic so far away from the stock market and from understanding economic theory. 
 

I really don’t want to sanitize what happened, but I think the exit polls we initially saw were wrong. This election wasn’t about abortion, fundamental rights, democracy, identity politics, or joy—it was about having money—and I probably (along with a lot of you here) didn’t see it coming bc 4 years ago I was in college, so I couldn’t measurably say if I am worse off or better off lol

the UK secretary of state gave a very warm congratulations to trump. much different to his response in 2017, where he called trump a racist n**i and kk* sympathiser. 

and, nigel farage has been frolicking around with trump, trump congratulating him for his gains in the UK last election. this just shows the direction politics is going in, a very dangerous one.
