Man I’m really regretting my preorders now lol

This album has neither of those things. The lyrics are actually quite heartbreaking, though they lack the purple prose that I think made folklore sound so "grownup". It's wayyyy more experimental than Lover and has less "safe" songs. The lyrics are weird and campy. I really think it's a solid body of work, and has good cohesion and direction. The aesthetics of what she wore to award shows matches the sonics better than the aesthetics of the photoshoot tho, imo.

i don't get her relationship with joe tbh because rep was largely written before she even dated him, and ever since she's been with him she's released some of her saddest songs (DBATC, folkmore, and now maroon/question...?/etc.). I'd love to know the muses of Maroon and Question...? tbh because they sound like past exes. 

 

Karma and Viglante Shit are def about Scooter Braun I think

I disagree that Meningitis is a cohesive album. There are moments of sonic whiplash where you go from the sweet & sad cottage-core of Folklore to the aggressive production of Reputation (specially in Vigilante Shit and Karma) to the bombastic nostalgia of Lover/Melodrama. The whole thing is basically an amalgamation of past sonorities and approaches that are awkwardly disjointed but glued together nonetheless. It’s not adventurous nor does it need to be BUT we’ve seen her tackling these soundscapes better before, in other projects.

 

Releasing a mid collection of different styles that doesn’t even elevate the past work she’s recreating feels like a major regression for one of the biggest music stars of our time, in a year that has been so strong for music with career best work being released by Beyoncé, Rosalía, Kendrick, etc. This might very well be her creative bankruptcy moment and she would be better off taking a bit of time off to really assert the type of artist she wants to be because this flip flopping between wanting to be known as a singer songwriter AND being this dramatic, controversial, cheeky mega popstar will eventually start working against her.

Mostly background vocals. I feel like they’re slightly more discernible during the chorus and post chorus but everywhere else is a mere whisper under Taylor’s voice.

Absolutely. There seems to be a tendency by most people to affirm what I said though. That’s why they’ve been critically acclaimed and still talked about to this day despite having been released months ago.

 

And I didn’t even mention smaller/less mainstream acts like Mitski, Perfume Genius, Bjork, etc. This has been a great year for music.
