I hate to say that but I think the song is terrible. It still sounds to me like an ice cream truck on drugs   The video made me cringe, it looks so wrong to see the three together - it's just not working for me. Lana looks so grown up and classy compared to Miley and Ariana, it's just wrong on so many levels. I'll pretend that that song does not exist And am I the only one who is scared by Mileys eye make up?

I love the Barrie theories from you guys, especially the Venice Bitch one. I just found a few more lines that screamed Barrie to me.

    Fear fun, fear love
    Fresh out of fucks, forever
Tryin' to be stronger for you
    Ice cream, ice queen
I dream in jeans and leather
Life's dream, I'm sweet for you   Could reference Barries depression, maybe him beeing afraid of fun and love or thinking he does not deserve those feelings. Also her trying to be there for him and be the strong one he can lean on.   Give me Hallmark
One dream, one life, one lover
    Paint me happy and blue
Blue as the synonym of their relationship - he made her happy but at the same time pulled her down with his own inner darkness and made her feel blue.

From NFR I think we definitely can add California to the Barrie Songs as the Barrie anthem.
In addition these lines from FIILY

So I moved to California, but it's just a state of mind
It turns out everywhere you go, you take yourself, that's not a lie
Wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine
It's killing me slowly   You moved to California, but it's just a state of mind
And you know everyone adores you
You can't feel it and you're tired
Baby, wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine
    But it's killing me slowly
give me Lana/Barrie vibes. They both moved to California but they also took their personal problems with them. Also Lana telling Barrie that he is fine and loved the way he is; but him not beeing able to see that.

Great topic! I love your interpretation from the core of my heart!

Also this may be off topic but I always interpreted Honeymooon lyrics as an exaggeration, as you said, and her relationship with Francesco

And I ALSO think the title Norman Fucking Rockwell references not only him (remember "You think you're Hunter S. Thompson"), but its a "personification" of all the trashy men she met and the american "ideal man" itself

  7. Elsemarie159 liked a post in a topic by Say Yes to Heaven in Timeline of NFR Songs
Much like my old Timeline of LFL songs thread, I will be attempting to create a very rough and questionable (at times) list going in chronological order of the creation of songs on NFR. Of course, we only know about when a handful of songs were written so this is kind of messy.

    Early 2015 - November 2016:
The Next Best American Record [Lana mentions "you did it all for fame" being the title track of the album to a leaker in November 2016, putting the songs recording to about early to mid 2016.] Sylvia Plath [Lana talks about the history of this song in an interview saying she fine tuned it's lyrics over 3 years, giving a rough estimate of the song's beginnings around this time.] March 2017 - July 2017:
Mariners Apartment Complex [Pure speculation, but Lana talked about this song noting it was written after a guy she was seeing made a comment she didn't like. We know she's been with Chase since early 2018 meaning the guy before that would've been G-Eazy, which puts this song around the time of their fling. Would also make sense since it contains a Yosemite lyric]
    December 2017 - January 2018:
Bartender [Lana first mentions having done this track at an awards show but not having an album to stick it to at that moment. It was recorded with Rick before Jack's entrance into the album] Love Song [Lana spoke about going to record this song with Jack at his studio the day after reconnecting with him (January 29th, 2018)] January 2018 - February 2018:
Sylvia Plath (First Recording?) [Lana has also mentioned recording a song with a Jack that she had written. It's unknown if this was the first time Hope was recorded] March 2018:
Norman Fucking Rockwell [Lana mentioned in September 2018 that she got the title track of the record down in March.] Happiness is a Butterfly [Lana posts the first very rough sounding snippet of HIAB in late March, giving a good estimate of the recording happening either that day or that week.] October 2018 - January 2019:
How to Disappear [Lana first teased this track on her Instagram with it's piano demo in October, which gives it's recording date around that time. The song can then be heard being worked on in a livestream done by Del Rey which featured Jack in January 2019. Lana also stated it was the last song recorded for the album in an interview taking place in December 2018, though that was before she went back and added more to the record.] February 2019 - April 2019:
Fuck It, I Love You [The last song recorded, we know it was around this time due to the information  below on Doin' Time] Doin' Time [Recorded around this time, Lana has said it was done just as the album was finished. To which she went back and re-did the tracklist to include it.] Tracks I really can't determine:
California [since it was with a different producer, we really have nothing to go off of to determine it's recording date.]
The Greatest [Anytime after January 29th, 2018. Since that was the first day she worked with Jack. Mentions of Hawaii missing the fireball could denote it's writing taking place around January 2018, though the Kanye west fiasco didn't happen until October.]
Venice Bitch [Anytime after January 29th, 2018. Since that was the first day she worked with Jack]

Again, this is based on loose information. We know how Lana is with dates and stuff, plus songs can go through many many different variations and demos and could've been sat on for years, like Hope was, until it gets re-done.

Here's the LFL timeline thread if you wanna check that out:

    Hi guys

Hope you are all enjoying NFR !

Special thanks to the administrator of the forum, Elle, for allowing me to post here - I really appreciate it <3

So, basically, I am working on my thesis project, which is a magazine from superfans to superfans, that celebrates love, fandom, friendships and of course the relationship between fans and the artist. I am looking for fans to contribute (by sharing stories, photos etc) and interview.

Lana always had such a big impact on me as a creative, so it's a must to include and celebrate her

Please let me know if you are interested and I will drop you a message!

California is a perfect example of why I think Lana's new direction in music isn't clicking with me. The vocal layering in the chorus makes me cringe and kinda gives me a headache. It's a good song tho

i really like how to disappear. i love how the production is really simple and cute. the orchestra/brass is iconic. better than i expected from all the negative things ive seen on here. i think TBNAR is easily my least favorite, the lyrics and chorus just dont really click for me. but theres not a BAD song on this album.

idk why but Ariana and Miley seem like the crazy best friends and Lana seems like the awkward cousin that was invited to the party.......

Average pop song, forgettable. Ariana stans are worse then Lana stans in that they will lap up and buy and stream the shit out of something regardless of what she does. So I doubt Lana has anything to do with it or ‘saved the song’. Nothing more then a buzz song to boost the film and another few hundred k in the bank for Lana for doing very little. Was probably thrilled to be asked with miley and Ariana. Miley has talent and Ariana has a great voice but I don’t personally think her songs or asthetic are good...they’re just commercial chart stuff really...grew out of that type of music a few years ago so is boring to me.

Honestly this was just as horrific as I expected, such a wrong choice, artistically it just doesn’t do her any good. I hate to say this shit about Lana because I love her to bits, maybe she did this for fun or whatever and that’s okay but the song is just ugly, their parts don’t blend, there’s no chemistry, the song is chunky and it’s all because they’re all so different from each other it just sounds patched up. So much beauty comes out when she teams up with artists as talented as she is like when she teamed up with Leonard Cohen’s son but she is just in another league from Ariana and Miley. I’m sorry this came out when she was getting so much recognition. I said what I said, I’m ready to be torn to shreds.

i think the irony really is that despite her having the least vocals.... she's the most sultry and mysterious in the video and for me she almost accidentally stands out as the one who's most interesting. miley and ariana are performing how you'd expect them to, lana has a persona which is different to her own music videos. it's almost like in some respects it's worked in her favour (although i admit this could be just how i see it)

Lana is not only the best part of the three, but she's also the prettiest. I will never get over how retched Miley is. Ariana is just plain boring. I don't understand why people make such a big deal about her and her ponytail.

The song in general is awful but Lana's part is good.

Lana is so out of place in this video.

I want to take this moment to say that Lana's soundtrack catalogue is so so so bad. She, the most cinematic artist of the century, should have FANTASTIC and acclaimed soundtracks.

Her only actually good soundtrack is the incredible Young and Beautiful. Then Big Eyes (amazing song) and Once Upon a Time.

The rest I don't even remember.

I hope some day she serves another Y&B for a huge film.
