anyone else think California might be about Barrie? the “flipside” and the “weather” references from Ultraviolence make me think of it. also she always made very American references about him despite him obviously not being. and in songs he’s often marked by her trying to help/look after him in his sadness.

I really love Elvis myself, and this song was one of the first ones I listened to on YouTube when delving into her unreleased work. Holds a special place in my heart.

I agree! Hawaiian Tropic for me is the most obviously about him (and by default EMGHW and Daytona Meth although she mixes them up) because every single line is a reference.  But there’s so many others I think are. I also always suspected the “Hawaiian Surf” theme was partially inspired by him as her Elvis references start hardcore in the trailer park era 

I think she would do a great cover of “in the ghetto” or “love me” 

i always thought Back To The Basics was about him because of the lyric “sit back in my pink cadillac” and “you can sing for the neighbors…you’ve been pretty stupid ever since you got famous”. 

I truly believe way more songs than just “Elvis” are actually about Elvis or at least directly referencing him so I love this for her 

no because as soon as i heard that they offered lana to do a song for Priscilla and she said no, i immediately suspected it was because of her love for Elvis and i think i was right lol. she clearly hates seeing him being put in a bad light and didn’t want to participate in a movie that shows that he’s a bad person.

I’m a lifelong elvis fan so there’s a bunch of songs that I think are about him (like All Smiles) but don’t technically have references. but I don’t know how big of a fan she was - if she’d read a bunch of the books about him then there’s other niche references too. because her look was so heavily Priscilla influenced I’m inclined to think she was a Big fan and might have read some 
 
oh and also! more direct references would be super movie which references Sand hotel casino, Chevrolets, Vegas and the cococabana which are all heavily associated with elvis .

Off the top of my head, not including the one offs where she mentions his name or Velvet Elvis etc

Black hair, Cadillacs, red hawaiian shirt, being bad and then going patriotic, Coca Cola and rollercoaster references (two of his favourite things), he gave Priscilla a white corvette, plus “king”.
 
So any time she mentions a bunch of those references. Plus King Creole is an Elvis movie where he plays at being a criminal, and a lot of the “watching tv” stuff.

Omg I can’t believe I posted that 8 years ago I’ve been here forever. also I’ve started to think a lot of her songs are about musicians that have passed away. Elvis for example I think has soo many possible references apart from the obvious named ones.

i don't know if she's ever mentioned him in interviews but he's listed as one of her influences on her myspace in 2006

Women using the word "raped" in songs is so powerful to me. I feel like it's something that a lot of listeners, particularly male listeners, may find jarring. But personally, I find it refreshing to hear an artist like Lana do it if that is the case. I think the mentioned subtleness of it is quite interesting, so it really could be maimed as well and I think the meaning of the lyrics would hold the same weight. Especially in the verse the word is used in. It reminds me a lot of Hole's "Asking For It"

I feel like it's "he's SELLING something on the boulevard of broken dreams" but I don't know what he's selling haha.. i can't hear stars anymore

I really liked the movie! My only problem with it is that I felt like some scenes went by wayyyy too fast and some too slow. Don't really like how they skipped over his whole movie era which is so iconic looking back. 
 
 
Baz said that he might release a 4 hour cut of the movie and I would love to see that if it happens

^ Part of the Pacific Group (of which Atlantic Group is a branch of) is also partly run/overseen by a man named Jim. I forgot she was part of that, there's a lot of horror stories about the PG groups and its branches.
