    as an artist n designer i have thoughts on this. i really don't think it's exploitative because they're being really open about the process.
    you have a potential $250 for the winner and you know you're giving your copyright to LDR's team. if you're chosen, you get to have your work featured on an official lana del rey merch line, which i think is pretty cool. plus, they make nice portfolio pieces.
     
    at that point it's up to the artist to decide whether or not they want to partake. 
    yes, i submitted a piece! i just think it's a great opportunity for fans. i personally am really excited
