I said it once, I don't understand why Lana wanted to work with Mike, a HIP/HOP producer to give us a piano ballad that she could've made easily with Jack, math ain't mathing.

I don't care about the album cover. I just want ONE upbeat song (Doin' Time, High By The Beach, Summer Bummer). It's been too long !!!! (Don't call me angel) and I'm sick of the ballads!

i love the new songs yet i definitely don’t want her the pursue that "poetry but make it a song" direction. its a nice change for a song or two, having a more free form approach and so. and i get she loves poetry, good for her. but i honestly couldn’t care less about her poetry. i stan lana for being a musical artist, who makes music, not for being a wannabe poet and i deeply hope it’ll stay that way

For me it's frustrating to listen to these because I think these songs had a lot of potential in terms of progression of the instrumentation, but it's all very ... dull and uneventful. I get that that's hOw sHe wAnTeD iT tO bE but why can't we have both? We used to have both

These are not for me, and that's okay, but Hope was different because it was the first song she'd really released in that style (piano + emotional, lyrically rich vocals). So it was acclaimed because it was a first for her, and unique in her discography.
IMO it doesn't work with these because 1. she's already done this, with Hope (and with Violets to an extent), and 2. none of these (including Hope) have any replay value unless you enjoy sitting and crying
Anyway before anyone tries to fight I'm not complaining - as I said, these are just not for me - but lbr how many of you sit around and listen to Hope on repeat? I feel like once the hype on these has died down, nobody will be listening to them.

Am i mean to think Nikki Lane is actually have a negative influence on Lana's music taste / art direction lately? I mean, i'm not a hater since she is being such a good friend, but it seems like Lana's music has been inspired by her somehow and I don't feel good about this ?

sorry to interrupt, just wanted to remind that piano flops suck, Nikki Roach is annoying and Jack stinks

    What–
I don't hate you. I don't hate these songs, but here's the deal: I'm seriously tired of this type of discourse and counter-criticism, it's like whenever someone says "well derr I'm not sure about this/these new song(s)" or "I don't like this new song because of x reason(s)" there is always that one person that comes along and discredit people like "UGH WE GET IT YOU WANT LANA TO DO BORN TO DIE OR ULTRAVIOLENCE 2.0 GET OVER YOURSEL!!!!1!". It's like people can't just not like a new song/album, because they just don't like said new song/album.

Normalize not liking something Lana does while not necessarily wanting her to release material that harkens back to a specific time and place in her career. I'll even go one step further, normalize just not being enthralled with her approach on specific albums, because you have like opinions and personal preferences.

I know this will sound annoying to some of y'all coming from me, the so called no. 1 NFR or Jack hater, but I said what I said.

Who said that? We just want something else other than piano bestie

Seriously. Can't share an opinion that involves not being super satisfied or happy with recent releases without someone (1) assuming that means you're a BTD stan (2) assuming this means you're asking for dance/pop/mainstream or (3) someone insisting that you just have no taste.

I thought the entire reason of being on the forum was to discuss Lana's work, not for me to sit here and praise every single thing she releases whether it fits my music taste or not.

It's not even like anyone is like "this is garbage ew." We're straight up giving thought out responses or even something as simple as "not really feeling this style" and next thing you know it's, as you say, "UGH WE GET IT YOU WANT LANA TO DO BORN TO DIE OR ULTRAVIOLENCE 2.0 GET OVER YOURSEL!!!!1!"

god this tired ass argument again? no one, and i mean NO one, wants this from lana. no one. wanting some strings, beats, bass, mixing that doesn’t sound like it was made by amateurs, whatever isn’t asking for pop or “shake your ass" music. and wanting this type of production or anything that sounds as good as her production pre-nfr isn’t wanting BTD 2.0 either. she can make art, and she used to, with productions that are far more interesting or different than simple piano or over saturated fake drums. if y’all enjoy the garageband pianos great but accept that there are people who don’t.

I forget who, but someone here made a post about this a while back, about how they don't blame Lana for staying in one lane kind of thing since finally an album (NFR) was critically acclaimed and widely accepted/praised. I have to agree! Like even though it sucks, I can see why she feels comfortable like this. I hope she realizes that stans are stans though and we've always loved her wild fire no matter what critics thought

I agree 100%, whilst her mature sounding songs are good she needs to let her hair down and have fun because it’s actually getting stale. I like the three songs I’m not bored of them yet, but if the whole album is like this then I’m gonna be very disappointed. She’s lost that fire in her belly she had with the first few records and it’ almost like she’s  scared to move because of critics.  I personally think AKA is way more interesting production wise and lyrically then anything she’s done in the last few years.  I’m not interested in her friends or how she wants to paint her banisters, I miss the Off To the Races and Cola type songs where she was more fun….it’ a shame she scrapped Serene Queen.  Now she’s getting influenced by country music and Nicki Lane, it’ not a good sign.

I don't disagree with that, at first 'Text Book' was the only song that really struck me as great, I have given a couple more listens to the others and I think 'Wildflower Wildfire' is good, but I'm not really blown away, it's definitely the most "bombastic" song out of the three though. The so called title track is just aight. It's been a couple days since I have listened to 'Text Book' and it's still a good song to me, but I think I like the idea of the song's structure/melody more than I like the song itself.

I wish Lana would bring back fire songs, with bombastic energy, I'm over the sweet, subtle and "organic" approach to everything post-LFL.

Tbh I don’t really get the people who are like “HER SONGWRITING GROWTH!!!!!!” after the 3 new releases.

Ok yeah, the lyrics are some of her most personal, but her lyrics have generally always been complex and multilayered. Also, the Blue Banister’s production is probably the simplest she’s released and it lacks a melody. Text Book is good but it sounds similar to the production of her past eras.

I feel like people are equating personal lyrics and more stripped down songs to be more mature and therefore better songwriting. To me, something like AKA is way more impressive considering how unique and innovative the whole thing is, especially given the fact that nothing else sounds like still today this day AND she released it as an indie artist. Also, if you are praising her being so personal now, um hello? Pawn Shop Blues was released 11 years ago.

I’m not saying these songs aren’t good or that it’s not interesting to see Lana evolve, but I don’t get how people are losing their minds over these 3 songs when she’s released AKA, UV, NFR, and BTD in the past, which may not be as personal or “mature” sounding, but were/are far more innovative and interesting given the period of time they were released in and in general imo.

I think 'Serene Queen,' cut from LFL as we know, had a vibe that was both 'futuristic'/techno-ish and 'witchy.' It's one of my favorite leaked tracks.

How so? I'm just saying the songs are not my cup of tea. I've tried to like them but it didn't happen, and that's okay.

I guess you could call it delulu
I was looking for the producer I wanted back
And I thought I found it in Mike Dean
It seemed only appropiate he'd easily make bops

You got hip-hop beats, BTD had some too
Let's make a piano flop, I'll design the cover for you

These new songs aged like milk for me already I'm guessing this will be another era not for me. Maybe LDR9 then...

I don't know how it happend but somewhere between after NFR release and before COCC dropped I completly loss my connection with Lana. i just feel absolutley nothing for her new music whatsoever. It's like I'm at a dinner party, around a massive table that's layed out beautifully and the majority of the guests there are having a good time but I'm not. Its so jarring...I'm constanly trying to get into Lana's latest releases and I can't. The more I do so, the further the dissapontment with the music grows.

The energy, the truly distinct core of what made Lana seperate from the rest is gone, it died after the end of Get Free along with the hollywood sadgirl persona and rightly so. She has every right to change, to move forward and to write music at her actual level of maturity. Right now I feel Lana is currently forging a new core, seperate from her past self. NFR is clearly a transitional record, killing off one mindset to go to another. Its actually easy to spot as lyrically she's probably at her peak right now and that's BC she's mostly freed herself from her old red dresses/blue/daddies etc type of content and unique-to-lana clichés.

I just think currently the poor woman is lost in many aspects and its being reflected in the music. I do wonder BC of the last three singles subject matters that we've got that she's now only just started properly processing her feelings/memories and I do hope she's dealing with her past emotional and physical trauma in a healthy way. Most of all I hope Lana discovers her new core and her real little slice of happiness she's has always wanted.
