There's a certain point the body can't come back from

In one year, we've learned the turn of the mouth

The depth that the chest cavity takes

Chucky was there for three out of three

I was there for the third 'cause I couldn't be There for the one who was closest to me

But I can't say I run when things get hard

It's just that I don't trust myself with my heart

But I've had to let it break a little more

'Cause they say that's what it's for

That's how the light shines in

That's how the light shines in

It's how the light gets in

Mhm

[Whistling]

So, everyone was there, tey were standing, laughing

& I'm on the side with my tears streaming down

Something about the clutch of the wrist

He thought mine was his to cough into his mouth

We've only got hours

& I just can't stop crying, 'cause all of the ways

When you see someone dying, the sea of your days flash in front of you

& you think about who will be with you

& then there's Donoghue

Mhm

Daddy, I miss them

I'm in the mountains

I'm probably running away from the feelings I get

When I think all the things about them

Daddy, I miss them

I'm at the Roadrunner Cafe

I'm probably running away from the thoughts and the day

That have things to do with them, but they say

That's how the light gets in

That's how the light gets in

That's how the light gets in

Think by the third of March, I was cracked open

Finally, the ground was cold, they wouldn't open

Brought by the sunlight of the spirit to pour into me

There's a name for it in Japanese - it's kintsugi

They sang folk songs from the '40s even

Be-fourteen-year-old new froggy came accordin'

How do my blood relatives know all of these songs?

I don't know anyone left who knows songs that I sing

That’s how the light gets in

That’s how the light gets in

But, Daddy, I miss them

I'm at the Roadrunner Cafe

Probably running away from the feelings today

In the snow-capped mountains of the desert

Daddy, I miss them

I'm in the mountains

Probably running away, I'm meaning to say

That there's nothing to do except know that

This is how the light gets in

By cracking, the light gets in

It's how the light gets in

That's how the light gets in

That's how the light gets in

& you're golden

Oh, oh, oh

Just another folk song, but hey, I try so hard, but that's okay

It's how the light gets in

It's how the light gets in

It's how the light gets in

There's so much she's saying in this song - the anecdotes act as metaphors too and i love how they're all wrapped up in the concept of "Kintsugi"... for example during my first listen when she was belting out the "I don't know anyone left who knows songs that I sing" lyric from that entire verse about her relatives, i immediately realized she's saying that not feeling alone is a way for the light to get in. I adore this song I think it's my favorite one from the album and it's up there with my favorite songs ever

does anyone get the lines

"There's something about the clutch of the wrist He thought mine was his to carve into his mouth and we've only got hours"

i think she says cough, not carve and i think she's talking about someone grabbing her wrist to cough into as they're dying. i could be wrong tho

I'm curious how you guys interpret the lines:

" There's a certain point the body can't come back from

In one year, we've learned the turn of the mouth

The depth that the chest cavity takes.."

I believe the first line is about the death or shortening of telomeres, but the following 2 lines confuse me a bit?

Spoiler

I've seen speculation that the turn of the mouth would be a frown, and the depth of the chest cavity is a reference to screaming but I really don't know lol

turn of the mouth makes me think of make peoples faces (usually mouths) droop when get a stroke. So I figure her grandma or great uncle dick had a stroke and the other had heart problems/lung problems - something going on in their chest cavities. Tbh my explanation seems a little.. lacking still like im missing something

IMO

The turn of the mouth = frowning/sorrow/grief on the face

The depth the chest cavity takes = when someone dies, there’s no more breath, the chest cavity becomes concave without air

this one here is on its way to be my favorite lana song

BITCH ME TOOOOOOOOOO

fucking love this one. i think this is her songwriting at its peak. she could've kept it going another 3-5 minutes and it wouldn't have overstayed it's welcome for me. it just goes so many places ugh love this one so muchhhhhhhh

@Elle I believe the line is

"The 14-year-old knew 'Froggy Came A-Courtin'"

and at the end I hear

"Just another folk song but anyway,"
