Kisum 19 Posted May 31, 2020 What has not changed for me re Lana Del Rey in the last few weeks: Lana Del Rey is still among the greatest music acts of all time. It's not about record sales, but Born to Die is now in 15th place on the Billboard 200 “most weeks” chart. (Not including “greatest hits” compilations). The only female act higher is Adele with 21. Born to Die passed Tapestry last year, leaving Carol King in third place for females. And Born to Die is still selling. It'll soon pass The Beatles', Abbey Road, and Fleetwood Mac's, Rumors. And BTD is not even LDR’s best. IMHO, NFR is better. And Ultraviolence is definitely better, in almost everyone’s opinion. Nothing against any music acts today, many good ones, but only a few of Lana's contemporary's will be considered a giant of this era, like her. Kendrick Lamar, for sure. Taylor Swift? Maybe. But what separates Lana and Kendrick is that they created their own sub-genres. That they own. Like Pink Floyd, at the top of the “most weeks” chart, with The Dark Side of the Moon. Innovation, artistry, are what it's about but "weeks on the chart" cements it. You can argue that there’s better indie film makers than Tarantino but Tarantino films sell tickets. He's classic. Lana Del Rey is in that same vaulted place. She’s bent the culture to her Art. Not the other way around. So what’s changed re LDR in the last 2 weeks? She’s no longer the coolest person in the universe. Or, rather, Lana Del Rey still is. But Elizabeth Grant has proven to be, like the rest of us, human and flawed. A brilliant diamond, but flawed. And some of the mystique is gone because Elizabeth is just not a great spokesperson for Lana Del Rey. The best spokesperson for LDR is the music itself. LDR, the artistic creation, doesn’t care if she’s PC or not PC. She's just telling her truth. And she doesn’t need to point out how she’s bent the culture to her. She's just doing it. And she's growing, changing over time. Moving into something more progressive and positive. Fresh. Uncharted territory. So where are things now? I think we’re lucky to be living in the peak LDR era. She’s putting out one amazing work after another. I didn’t need to Elizabeth to point out that LDR has opened doors for others. It’s obvious. Just listen to the pop charts. So I hope the malicious Stans give Elizabeth a break. Leave her to her muse. Recognize that Lana, right now, is like Bob Dylan in the Blonde on Blonde era. Come to think of it, Bobby Zimmerman was not the best spokesman for Dylan either, right? I mean who cares what Zimmer says when we have the music itself. I worry that the crazy Stans, not the loving ones, will get into Elizabeth's head and mess up this beautiful thing that we have. LDR is such a powerful creation, she’s bending the culture. So let's all sit back and wait for the next one to drop and enjoy it. And BTW, Doja Cat, who I thought was like a novelty act, turns out to be really interesting and very good. So I hope they give her a break too!

maxthehitman 1,729 Posted May 31, 2020 All of them are considered legendary but they are all men You are correct, I did not write more (so as to not bore people ) but if you look at the links I posted, you will find some women in them too. I will add a few more ! https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/most-hated-musicians-of-all-time.html/ 2. Nicki Minaj - Love her or hate her, Nicki Minaj has delivered many memorable hits in recent years. But her overly sexual persona, her inane melodies and lyrics, and the constant feuds she finds herself in haven’t exactly established her as the most meaningful voice in hip-hop 5. Taylor Swift - Despite being one of the biggest stars in the world, Swift’s mainstream success in the pop world has led to a backlash, with many people tired of her constant appearances in the tabloids, her suspiciously perfect public persona, and her tendency to write music about her love life. To some, she is the voice of our generation. To others, she should just go away. 8. Miley Cyrus - This former child star went from Hannah Montana to one of the most bizarre live performances ever (involving Robin Thicke and a giant foam finger). We understand that the now-adult Cyrus wants to rebel against her former image, but there’s such a thing as going too far. Max adds = Also to add to this list are her crazy antics and drug use during a Live Music-Awards TV show. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ https://www.ranker.com/list/most-hated-musicians-in-america/malmrphy 7 - Courtney Love - Why We Hate Her While her attitude inspired many, it has also rubbed others the wrong way. Case in point: she has been known to hurl insults and objects at fellow celebrities (see her transparently "friendly" confrontation with Madonna at the 1995 VMAs). Many conspiracy theorists also blame her for her husband, Kurt Cobain's suicide--due to their public marital problems. And lest we forget, to the rest of Nirvana, she was another Yoko Ono. Nowadays she is known more for being drunk and high than for her musical legacy. 17 - Kesha - Why We Hate Her Four simple words: Lack. Of. Musical. Substance. She's not exactly a vocalist, and her songwriting isn't anything to be excited about either. For many critics, she can easily be dismissed as a brainless party girl. And her music does nothing to dispel that. UPDATE: Kesha has dropped the dollar sign from her name, and has been entangled in a contract dispute, which includes claims of rape and just wanting overall freedom. 19 - Sinéad O'Connor - Why We Hate Her The exact same thing that made her a cult-hero has also made her a target for media fodder. Sinéad has taken complete advantage of the First Amendment ("freedom of speech"), and it has landed her in hot water dozens of times. Beginning with the time she tore up a photo of the Pope during her SNL performance, she has since been subjected to her music being boycotted, and being booed off of stage. Her attitude has even rubbed Frank SInatra the wrong way, leaving "Old Blue Eyes" to threaten to "kick her in the ass". All of the backlash, however, didn't nor hasn't stopped her from speaking her mind and letting her opinion be heard. 20 - Lady Gaga - Why We Hate Her Let's just say she takes herself waaaaay too seriously. And, although she means well, she can be rather annoying when it comes to her approach to trying to regulate rights within the LGBT community, coming across as an overtly flamboyant gay man trapped in a woman's body. Maybe that's why even her gender has came into question. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Not included on these lists are other very controversial women in music which have done many things in which critics as well as fans, have become angry at them. Debbie Harry (aka Blondie) - Once an early punk rock singer and very controversial onstage woman, she turned to being a Pop Princess to the dislike of many fans. She had "sold out" to the corporate music business. But do not forget that their song “Rapture” was the first rap song most people ever heard ! Not Run-DMC. - https://www.spin.com/featured/blondie-debbie-harry-chris-stein-january-1986-cover-story-debbies-back/ Beyoncé (Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter) - Many controversies surround her by music critics as well as fan critics, including racial controversies. Search Google and spend the next couple of weeks reading about them ! Kate Bush - https://www.npr.org/2011/08/16/139579900/another-american-looks-at-why-americans-dont-care-for-kate-bush?t=1590963287671 Madonna - Way too many controversies to mention here. Search Google and spend the next couple of weeks reading about them ! Soooo many other female singers. So Lana Del Rey is not alone and free from critical controversy. In time, people will forgive all of them and move on with their lives.... because their MUSIC legacy will last forever and will survive 1 Quote -

I have refrained from posting any of my views about all of this bc I don’t like confrontation and I’m incredibly sensitive, but I will say that I think moving forward no matter what she says in poetry or an album might receive a ton of unnecessary hatred. Again, without saying what is right or wrong, the message that Lana is likely receiving is that there’s a problem with her expressing herself in all ways. I mean after so long, I would probably give up. I hope that she doesn’t bc I need her music.

mkultraviolence 5,832 Posted May 31, 2020 It's sad to see her own fans dragging her, obliterating her. Like, that's sick. Her own fans? There's some who are really offending her, this isn't nice. Thank the lord now she's respected inside the music industry - and let's be honest, besides Ari (which I love) the other ones whom she mentioned and who called her out are a bunch of no ones inside the industry and nothing they or their fans say can nor will affect Lana's legacy and importance inside the industry -. She's already a huge name, respected, people won't drag her nor her career down. At least I believe this. dude. who cares if we're offending her, she could have put people's lives in danger. we have no obligation to adore her every action, she's a human, not a fucking saint. was it nice when she completely invalidated all the black women who rightfully spoke out about the way they felt about her typewritten letters?
bored 7,938 Posted May 31, 2020 As I mentioned in a previous post, I do believe the original statement and the way she went about that was problematic - I still don't believe her intention was to be racist and I honestly still don't believe that Lana is a racist. She's very good friends with both The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky, her 2 backing dancers and best friends are both women of colour and in her original statement she said the women she listed were her friends. I do however disagree with the way she went about that whole situation and have made my opinions about that whole saga clear in a previous post. I think being labelled a racist a few days prior to such a traumatic event that is so heavily political and race based, is unfortunate on her account. Again, I'm not defending her, the statement was ignorant and she deserved the criticism she received, in my opinion. But having a platform like hers, she's expected to comment on events like the protests and the #blacklivesmatter movement that are happening right now. I honestly think, and again, just my thoughts... I think she remained silent as a show of respect, you know if she had of posted straight away about the incident she would have received major backlash following last leaks allegations of racism. Camila Cabello also receieved criticism on social media for posting about #blacklivesmatter (she was exposed for posting racist tweets (pre-fame) back in January). And yes, it was easier for her to remain silent, I can see that side and see how she could be seen as somebody who doesn't care etc. But, I do believe she remained silent in hopes of not adding fuel to the already burning fire, surrounding her priviledge and status. Of course, she couldn't stay silent forever, other peers calling her (and others) out for not speaking up and using their platforms - therefore she posted about it. Here it gets tricky, the way in which she posted did feel very, I have to do this etc. However, maybe it was for the best after all that she didn't write a statement, and she was potentially scared to, following on from last weeks events. She clearly went to a protest and was there, it's one thing posting on social media cos you have to, or your management want you to, or it's the right thing to do. But to actively go and protest, I think says more than you think. Again, it got problematic, she posted the video of people looting and didn't blur out their identity, even zooming in on some people - I genuinely don't think this was her trying to expose the looters or protestors (as she's been accused). I think this was a legitimate mistake and she has since removed the video after people pointed out her error. As for, what happens to Lana Del Rey now? I personally don't think this will effect her career as much as people think. Like I mentioned above Camila Cabello was exposed as a racist earlier this year and at the time, with cancel culture, it's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole of a situation. I do think her next record will probably decrease in terms of sales and acclaim, sales because she probably has lost fans due to her recent posts and behaviour (and that's her own doing). However, Norman Fucking Rockwell was well received as a coming of age, self reflection, looking outwards record. Clearly the new album is a return to her earlier style of songwriting, which as she pointed out, was heavily criticised and therefore I think recent events aside, the forthcoming album would have always been negatively received in comparison to Norman, especially as a follow up record. Whether or not the album is released this year, I don't know, I can't imagine them delaying it. But, I don't think her career is over, far from it to be honest.
FredRed 4,857 Posted June 1, 2020 I would have advised against posting anything as Lana can't seem to tie her shoelaces before she walks. It was unfortunate that the tangled web she weaved for herself happened just before George Floyd's murder. In reality Lana's psycho drama pales in relation to what happened to Mr. Floyd. She may take some heat or some love now on social media but the media in general will not pick up on it because it is not that important. THE TRUTH IS CNN, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, FOX NEWS 60 MINUTES ETC. ARE NOT BEATING A PATH TO LANA DEL REY'S DOOR TO GET HER OPINION ON THIS!!!!!! The idea that her posting or not is somehow important in the grand scheme of things is absurd. She is another high profile person who has a louder voice than we do but her making a post is not going to raise the consciousness of the culture. I will still buy her records and see her in concert. My opinion and I am not here to argue. Ultra Violet 18,996 Posted June 1, 2020 While I absolutely understand not everyone experiences growth at the same time, there are 16 year old girls out there that are woke af and speaking out non-stop as an ally for poc. I don't think we have to be so extremely delicate and careful when encouraging a 34 year old woman to start learning some more, when she has definitely taken advantage of other cultures and claimed to be so open minded. But then again, calling her racist and dumb isn't gonna help either.
