I was going to create a thread about her. The thing was I think she is so plural that the thread would take me forever to create. OMFG I have so much to talk and hear what others think about M.I.A  Not only the songs and visuals but everthing in between. My dad gave me her first album and said I would like it and said she was very interesting not only for her music. From that day on I have being a hard core fan. M.I.A to me is one of those few artists that doesn't matter if you like or not her work/music she is a necessary artist IMO.

She is the only artist that talks about really important issues and uses pop, visuals and rap to express her visions of the things wrong in the world we don't see (places like Sri Lanka where her parents were born and she lived during her childhood. Also certain parts of the middle east and the relations between media and governments interests.

Like in Bad Girls: do you know what they use to punish boys and womens in Sry Lanka and parts of the middle east? Chains. "The chains hits my chest when I am banging on the desk. My chain  hits my chest when I banging on the radio". Also notice she says specifically Cherokee Gasoline in Bad Girls. Guess why? The gasoline is the important part.

M.I.A is genius imo. She is quite big in Rio de Janeiro (São Paulo as well but in Rio she is very known) her beats are based a lot in Funk. The frenetic beat that comes from the slums in Rio. Funk is usually also very political or in his poor version sex explicit lyrics.

Her life story is very interesting as well. She was born in London moved as a baby with her parents back to Sri Lanka. Her father was one of the founders of a non violent student group against the government. She barelly saw her father when she was groing up in SRy Lanka. Since the police didn't leave her family alone her mom moved back to London with her and her siblings. She grow up in the a refugee area in London. Until today when the midia wants to descredit her they make assumptions she is a terrotist in discuise. The Sry Lanka government has called her out several times.

Born Free Is also genius. The fact she used gingers to illustrate the sitiuation was great. Was taken out of youtube and the air in several countries including USA

M.I.A doesn't give much interviews too thank god she is clearly not good at it. Looks usually high (I bet she is lol) and sometimes she makes you read between the lines

we all know that what one wise singer said about the awards is the truth so nothing really matters...

"I got a BRIT Award recently. And that was something four years ago that I would have died for. But when I finally got that award it meant absolutely nothing to me. Because I now know that The BRIT Awards is a TV show. Record company executives make deals with a TV channel and the producers about who wins what award in exchange for performance time. So its just become a non-award, like thank you for this."

Maybe I didnt express myself properly or maybe you didn't get what I meant. I was talking about the choice of using specifically the letter K. The song for K is indeed about a specific boy, well at least REALLY looks like it is, but the letter can mean things that are reference to this boy and also Lana and her surroundings. Not specifically about Kurt Cobain but Kurt reminds her from that time in her life with this boy who she also named K. Maybe this boy looks reminds her of Kurt, maybe Nirvana's songs reminds her of K.

I also was talking about a couple other songs not only for K and K part two since I belive other songs are related to him as well. And those songs have, between many others, lipstick, maekets and Nirvana references. It's just a thought and a bunch of maybe's tbh since I have no way to know what really is.

edit: what i am saying is that maybe identifying him, this particular guy,  with the letter K is not random or even about his name specifically

In Body Eletric I think Lana talks about 2 specific moments in her life. I think the song is related to K. The way Lana changes who her daddy, mother and bestest friends is I think is a way to mark those 2 moments.
      Elvis is my daddy,
    Marilyn’s my mother,
    Jesus is my bestest friend
    We don’t need nobody,
    ‘Cause we got each other,
    Or at least I pretend
We get down every Friday night,
Dancin’ and grindin’ in the pale moonlight
Grand Ole Opry, we're feelin’ alright,
Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind
You see that she changes later on who is her daddy, mother and bestest friend. At first Jesus is her bestest friend and they got each other or at least she pretends. Mary is the mother of Jesus. Lana said that she has contact with the mother of the man she sings about (in this case I think is K). Grand Ole Opry is a show that is broadcasted every friday night. Maybe they use to listen to the show together and now every friday night she goes out and pretends K is still here. Here she is more young and innocent listening to Elvis and dressing like Marylin

I’m on fire, baby I'm on fire
    Whitman is my daddy,
    Monaco’s my mother,
    Diamonds are my bestest friend.
Elvis, Marilyn and Jesus mark a previous period. Later her her daddy becomes Whitman, Monaco as a Mother and diamonds as bestest friend.  I think is a way to mark time in the sense she had changed and time passess as life goes on.  Is also a sign of somewhat loneliness and emptiness but also more money. Diamonds and Monaco represent opulence but also emptyness. Is a place and a thing. Whitman as father which is a poet that also talks a lot about death. Lana mentioned him several times and quoted hiis poem a child in the grass in her old missdaytona twitter account. I think the time fits with what she is talking in Body Eletric and also fits the music.

Quote from Whitman poem child in the grass:

    Suicide’s her father,
    Opulence is the end
We get down every Friday night,
Dancing and grinding in the pale moonlight
    Grand Ole Opry
    We're feelin’ alright,
Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind
This is the trick part to me. I don't personaly think Lana ever tried to kill herself. It takes a lot of desperation to take your own life. As much as she suffers I don't see her doing it. The other thing is she is somewhat religious and obssessed with heaven. People who commit suicide in most religions don't get to heaven. To me the reference as suicide is a way to say she was desperate. You have many ways to use suicide as a figure of speech or K has commited suicide because of the life style he chose for himself and his suicide is the father, the reason, why she is alone. Opulence is the end is also interesting since her mother is now monaco and her bestest friend are diamonds. In the end she ended up with many things but whithout what she really wanted that was k.

My clothes still smell like you,
All the photographs say you're still young
I pretend I’m not hurt and go about the world like I’m having fun
We get crazy every Friday night,
Drop it like it’s hot in the pale moonlight
    Grand Ole Opry
    feeling alright,
Mary's swaying softly to her heart's delight

One of the things about diying young is that you never grow old. Is a very strange thing specially when you look at pictures.  I guess that is what Lana is talking about since looking to pictures of someone who you lost and than looking at yourself in the mirror you really see how time has passed even if that person is pretty alive in your memories and in your head. In your head time stands still but in reality years has gonne by. I think here she makes that reference that her clothes still smell like him and the pictures shows her he is still young and in  her mind she pretends they got each other.

In Bel Air she mentions sweet child of mine and Knocking on heavens door (this one I assume) and I think they are not just a part of her song they also have a deeper meaning to the person the song is writed 2. " I grow up on hip hop and you kind of punkrock". In Bel Air I think both music's are very relevant. In Ride she mentions the war in her mind. In Bel Air she mentions:
    Idol of roses, iconic soul
    I know your name
Lead me to war with your brilliant direction
I think she is talking about God. Jesus was wearing a crown of thorns during the crucifixion. Also the term "rose from the dead is common in the bible.

I think the post is right, she's talking about her influences and who created 'her', at one point it was Elvis and Marilyn, probably her early days were she was influenced by his music and her glamour which is reflected in her songs and dress and later Whitman (a "proper" writer where she feels like she has validated her song writing as good) and Monaco (money and glamour sophistication) heaven she's a bit obsessed with and for some reason she considers it precious and her 'baby', suicides her father; how she feels she can see/be/reach her heaven and 'opulence'is the end I take that as indulgence etc, what were her favourite vices? Drugs and alcohol? I take the last line as the way to get to the end? As in to die. Hope this makes sense

What you said makes perfect sense to me. Even more if you think that her parents were not daily present in her life for a long time since she got into boarding school at 14. Her parents were the music she listen too, movies she watched and books she read it. She was raised by her idols in a way. They were the maternal and paternal figures she had while in boarding school and when she lived alone in NY.

2012. During my entire school life in a catholic school, lunch was disgusting and balanced (no salt), and you had to eat everything on your plate before being allowed to get up of the table. The beef /meat was so tick that sometimes when I tried to cut a piece end up in someone's else's plate or the floor, was like trying to cut thick rubber. Even the vegetables and salad sauce was organic and balanced, tasted like nothing. Didn't even make a difference if was broccoli or cauliflower, since both tasted the same: liek nothing. EWWWWWW. Not even gonna get into the chocolate and candy they sell ...ORGANIC. You smoke a joint and get the munchies and you are fucked if you forget to buy something before hit school because those sweeties ain't gonna fix you. Fuck even the crepe was made with flaxseed and not general flower. Sorry for the rant but I can't remember all those lunches without feeling like I will throw up. Food with no salt or very little salt is disgusting

I can understand you don't like or want to talk about the subject. My only point is if some know A others know B and some Y if people discuss/ talk about a subject they might leave the conversation knowing not only A anymore but A B and Y. I think that was Phahad intention, to make a conversation, exchange ideas. I don't think his intent was to troll around. But that is just me. I always had interest in history and I don't think I am a troll because sometimes I diverge my interest to what is called "conspiracy theories" . If I believe them? Most times I don't and think they are just absurd but sometimes they make sense and I look further learning new things that if I didn't allow my curiosity to take over I would never learn. I just think that exchange ideas is never stupid. Conspiracy theories are a lot like lanalysis if you think about it.  Since no one TRULY knows what or who (m) Lana is talking about in her songs. Most things in that thread are just assumptions that only have logic if you believe in things that are assumed to be true but never confirmed.

I hope this doesn't sound the wrong way or like a rant or something because really isn't.  I like you and respect you and I think is a shame that you won't give your opinion because it would be interesting to read your thoughts

as a marketing and Advertising student I can say Lana is (probably)  fully aware of the principles of authenticity. The first rule of authenticity is to never proclaim yourself authentic in any way. That said every person personal experience is authentic because we are all authentic human beings, no experience is equal to different people, not even sharing the same dish at a restaurant. The experience you feel is internal and all the external is not authentic.  In that sense also no experience is really authentic , not even going to camp in the jungle since someone designed the paper map or GPS you will use and someone designed the car, bike, plane that will take you there.

Since music these days is treated and sold as a commodity all rules of business and society applies to art in most cultures, being US the epitome of culture sold as a commodity, as a service (Itunes...serves you music....internet serves you a music store...goes on...) authenticity and all it's sub categories (Fake - Fake ; Fake-Real; Real-Fake; Fake-Fake and Real - Real) are probably under Lana's radar since her teens...her dad been a advertiser and all and her being clearly a good advertiser and a student of human behavior is fair to assume she's fully aware the search for authenticity is doomed from the start.

IMo Lana is a storyteller and she really gets into the character she's playing/writing about.

  21. labionda liked a post in a topic by Viva in Do you think Lana is a complete fake?
I said this 100 times: Lana is a storyteller first and a writter second. I think she met very interesting people among her life. I would be surprise if she lived more than 1 month in a trailer park and if she never lived in one wouldn't be a surprise at all. I think she creates several characters some probably based in people she met in her life others from her own imagination. I don't think she ever had a drug problem related to cocaine, meth and the hardcore ones. Maybe she started abusing alcohol at young age....maybe not.

I think she lies sometimes, sometimes she creates a character. In my opinion the difference between Lana and most is the fact she created that vision. the lie or character is in part who she wanted to be and how she sees certain types of girls. The difference between her and most is the fact she is a character of her own creation and she is in control of that character because he is a part of her. The character fits her since is her.

I think Lana is very smart, very political and has a opinion about society and uses the integration between sound (music) and image (videos) to give life to her visions/stories. I think National Anthem is a genious criticism towards US and is a very interesting political and social video. I think Lana is very ironic as well.

She is a liar but her lies are carefully chosen and even in that she is in control

There are 2 types of people who will always have to prove themselves more: the ones born in extreme poverty and the ones born with a golden spoon. The poor girl surviver story is in a way a ice breaker

IMO in the pop scene I would say Miley is going for the same line character wise but in a completely different trajetory the thing is that just like Lana she is in control.
