Honestly what's even the point of keeping up with this sexism discussion? Someone saying that the title track is sexist is simply not aware of the world we live in and how privileged men have always been (and how much women still struggle with their rights). Yes, if a man told the same thing in a song, it would have much more impact and be complete bullshit, again, because of the world we live in and with how hard equality is to get. But Lana saying that is NOT sexist. Period.

After all the songs we are getting from her earlier sessions with Barrie, I think we can appreciate that she felt the need to change the lyrics of The Next Best American Record.

This has always fascinated me. Listening to the original 2016 version of that song and the version that ended up on NFR (which was done in 2017), it’s so interesting to see that shift between spite and sympathy that occurred within that 1 year (California was also done in 2017). I remember in the 2014 Rolling Stone interview, Lana said that it was sad they couldn’t be together because their reasons for not being together were purely circumstantial. And I say all of this to not pry, but to just marvel at how impactful a relationship can be, even if it’s over, and how it can basically be distilled into beautiful art in Lana’s case. The tracks that they worked on together appearing on Blue Banisters, as well as Riverside being released on Barrie’s record, is really a moment that represents mutual understanding and acceptance.

I love how If You Lie Down With Me starts with "baby wants a dance, baby gets her way" and then the song ends with this beautiful long instrumental where you can just picture someone dancing Lana around the room like she asked him to

in my opinion, blue banisters is much more ambitious than chemtrails and it does a much better job at serving sounds she has never done (BBS and dealer especially). and i don't think having 4 different album covers, all shot professionally is a sign of lacking willpower. yes she was a lot more determined with BTD or LFL, but because she wanted them to be big, blue banisters is not meant for being #1 on the billboard hot 200 chart, it's her diary, her own story through music. she was never a pop star

With poor streaming numbers and no vinyls. Most of COTCC’ sales came from vinyls, most of Lana’s sales in general come from vinyls. She performed really well without them, 33k is not bad at all considering it’s her second album this year and she did little to no promo for it.
Now if you REALLY care about the charts, you should maybe worry about Elton who wasn’t even able to outchart Lana with a collaborative album that includes Nicki Minaj and Dua Lipa.

Lana has been deliberately separating herself from the mainstream pop scenery since 2018. I think it's time for people to stop thinking that she's gonna be back there -seems impossible at all after BB, but let's see-. Imagine thinking Fiona Apple could be back to making conventional, easy to hear melodies after The Idler Wheel. Na, just not that feasible -as it showed on FTBC-. I think that Lana is going through a simmilar road right now. She's evolved a lot since BTD days and I just cant picture her making commercially friendly music again.

She is no longer the pop star of yesteryear, and I don't think she wants to be. Her focus is now on writing poetry, you have to pay more attention to her lyrics and that was already the case with Chemtrails.  BB was not quick, the core songs like Black Bathing Suit go back to early 2020. Like honey dew said she is now on another level.

If I recall correctly, the vinyls weren’t included in the first week’s sales. With them, she would’ve easily reached the top 5, if not the top 3. There’s absolutely no need to worry about her longevity. If the vinyls only count for next week, there’s even a possibility that the album performs better than the first week

I can't listen to BB anymore. I got my heart broke and every song is too hurtful.

Elle, you don’t even know how much I love to read about your life stories and your relationship with Lana’s music <3

Re: the discussion of songs being about Clay —Sure, there are little references to him here and there (maybe two, in all honesty), but I really think this record is about her recalibrating her life after her breakup with Sean. I think the end of that relationship brought a lot of change in her life — good and bad — and this whole record explores that. We see her dig deep into her family karmic lineage and how that translates into her interpersonal relationships, we see her battle inner disruptiveness caused by family-of-origin trauma and how that translates into the public’s projection onto her. I think the end of that relationship was significant and not at all frivolous, based on how she talked about it in her livestream, and how we can see notes of that appear in the songs, the themes of which we can trace back to events in her life that we’ve been privy to over the last 2 years. It’s a beautifully dense record.

Twin!! My two favourite songs at the moment (and the title track has been on repeat since May). VFR deserves more love, the songwriting is so good!
