good morning! ok finally got to listen to LMLYLAW with earphones - a much much nicer and more enjoyable experience! all the subtleties are much more present. i honestly just wish the lyrics were stronger since the production is so stripped back, but they lowkey sound like something a fake insider would write im so sorry  can't help but feel like we'd all laugh at the "talk about the good old days / get high on pink champagne" lines

I listened to it like 10 times before going to bed and the first thing I did waking up was listen to it again on repeat... she did it!
It’s a very simple song apparently, but it hides a lot of tiny details and layers that requires multiple listens to be discovered and fully appreciated!
If you didn’t like at first listen (not my case tho) give it another try, it’s definitely a grower!
 

 
On a side note, I feel like sonically it would fit between MAC and VB and I love it ‘cause those are discography highlights.
 

Friday 4:25pm thoughts:
 
1. The cover is black and white which gives me hope for Wizard of Oz themes
2. The song is very emotive and for me, that's what's most impressive about it. You can't learn how to do that; it's inherent. 
3. I think the opening line is possibly "small talk" from when she met the subject. "I come from a small town, how 'bout you?"
4. The repetition of "let me" makes me think that this ties into the toxic masculinity she talked about experiencing, which incidentally was in the same interview in which she mentioned LMLYLAW, iirc. The wording suggests that the subject perhaps withheld his affection and/or rejected hers. "Let me hold you like a baby" - in other words, she wants him to allow himself to be vulnerable. 
5. "Doesn't mean songs and poems" perhaps the relationship was heavily impacted by her fame and career, so she's telling him she's more than just her work and if they move away she can have a life that isn't dominated by it. 
6. I feel like the echoes and layering reflect the vastness of the distances she's singing about, that she feels both in the relationship and geographically.

I don't think these two contradict each other at all. She's even saying how she's not forcing him to follow him out of LA ("I think I'd manage"), and I interpret the "I need you to come/want you to come" as her telling him she wants him to come but she'll manage without, and her inner dialogue saying she needs him but she's not going to pressure him. It's quite a comforting song imo, she's in love with him and needs him but she won't pressure him or force him to do anything.
 
BTD era would have her singing about how she'd literally die without him and she needs him to stay with her, now she's feeling the same but she doesn't tell him that because she's loving him like a woman, not a young girl.

she’s too visually intelligent to do this kind of cover off the cuff. it had to have been done like this intentionally; down to earth, and glaringly unpretentious, possibly to match that new midwest sound she’s going for or whatever. i mean honestly this looks like a cover for any run of the mill coffee shop singer in the early 2000’s but maybe that’s exactly what she was going for. doesn’t mean it isn’t ugly as fuck, i’d just like to think there was some thought behind it ?

This! I feel like people have normalized collectively critiquing someone’s art in a way that’s masked as sympathetic by saying things like “honey...” but really it’s just backhanded and kinda rude for no reason.

Well, do I think the disproportionate amount of attention and instagram comments she's getting off this cover is rude? Yeah. But I agree with the sentiment. It's not good, the cropping is bad, the font is hideous, the selfie is kinda off, kinda dig the little roses though... but the whole thing is just DIY through and through. 

idk if this is going to come across as over offended but that's so unnecessary??? like, leave her alone, no it's not great but it's really not that big of a deal.

Seeing all these negative comments on her Instagram post + Paradise Live leaking (putting me in the best mood ever), I want to take a step back from what I said.
I love you, Lana. The cover art isn't my cup of tea but you're the artist and I respect your artistic decisions. 
The song is beautiful and I don't mind the cover art at all. <3
