I can't even express how happy I am to see this happen. Julia is one of my favourite new(ish) artists, ever since I saw her supporting Cat Power.

I don't know any Lana fans who don't like the original, or who do like the Cedric remix.

She's really amazing - it's pretty rare that someone comes along who just sounds like themselves, and not anybody else. Of course, people compare her to artists like PJ Harvey or Diamanda Galas, but she doesn't really sound anything like them, even if she carries over some of their spirit. It's hard listening, but definitely worth the effort.

I'm genuinely pleased that your particular drinking issues have moved from being a problem, to you being able to drink socially, while keeping control. I do want to take issue with the idea that addicts who insist on total sobriety are being 'delicate'. For many of us, that look in eyes of our friends when they see that first beer in our hands, is because they know that times are just about to to get very very dark indeed, and that there's at least a year to come of chaos, job loss, relationship destruction and personal devastation. None of this is down to being 'judgy' or pc - just down to experience.

I hope she's not getting any performance tips from Dylan. People have argued for hours after his shows whether he played his biggest songs or not.

Born to Die is a much more important and interesting record than NFR (disclaimer: I love both of them), but the comments above are correct - Pitchfork would have to do some self examination and self-criticism if they turned around and gave it any credit after all this time. When people wonder why I call rock/music writing mostly gibberish, I can just point them to this as a perfect example.

So it looks like the reviews are pretty much done, and she's left on 87, which is a very good score overall (even though it's lower than what I think she deserves). It's worth noting that out of all the reviews, there are none that are below 60, and three quarters of them (21/27) are 80 or more. Considering her history, that's a great achievement. As long as she doesn't go off again on too many other critics, this all bodes well for the future.

This is a slightly idiosyncratic reading of the this, so I won't be surprised if people don't agree with me, but I think of the album version as not being a 'rewrite' of the demo, but a 'reprise' of it. In other words, the original version still exists in the grand narrative of Lana songs, but it's been extended by the album version. If this is right, and if, as seems almost certain, it and a couple of other songs on the record are about Barrie, it signals a change in how she feels about her relationship with him, five years down the line, which is fascinating.

Just be aware that he had a long run of books which are almost literally unreadable, where he would cut up his writing with scissors and glue, and retype the resulting gibberish. I'd recommend 'Queer' if you liked Junky, and Naked Lunch, which starts to be experimental, but is at least sort of readable. After that, you can jump to the trilogy he did in the 80s with Cities of the Red Night, Place of Dead Roads (my favourite of them) and Western Lands. I even more strongly recommend tracking down his records and audiobooks - a lot of them are on youtube, and the stories make much better sense when read by him, than if you're just trying to work through all the accents and affectations.

I'm still loving the record, even though I've cut back from listening three times a day to once a day. I still can't rate the songs in any order - I pretty much like everything on it.

The video's way better than the song, and sexy/awkward Lana is always super endearing. Honestly, I'm not an Ariana fan, and only like certain Miley records, but everything I've heard by the three artists on their own is better than this. Still, it will be a number one hit, and hopefully draws some unsuspecting people to NFR.

I've been listening to it on cheap ($10) headphones, and it sounds pretty great to me. Then again, my ears may not be what they once were, and I've spent all of my time not listening to NFR, listening to underground punk and heavy metal records, so that might be a factor.
