I think it’s “hospitals” 🥺🥺🥺 I truly do - I think that’s why she’s giving such careful consideration to the composition/release of BTIG, because that’s the first time she’ll really tell at least part of that story.

Yesterday on the live, she said the poems are “unflattering” to her - since the Guardian’s “I wish I was dead already” incident, I think she knows what a field day the press will have with painting her out to be some kind of irrational lunatic when that’s so far from the truth of mental health situations (which I assume she’s talking about in BTIG given her allusions to it but could be wrong).

Nope! Me too. I didn’t like them at first listen, but they grew on me a lot. Especially with that lo-fi organ moment at the end too.

    I agree with you!!
My interpretation of the album is that it starts with her breakup with Sean (TB, BB) which leads her to do a deep introspection. She starts with an introspection on her image, how others see her (Arcadia, BBS, Beautiful). On IYLDWM, she’s not over the breakup yet, but then the introspection continues as she realises that Sean wanted to change her for someone she is not (Beautiful, VFR). That leads her to the angry stage of her breakup on Dealer. She then regains her calm but still holds a grudge against Sean for not being a good enough man for her, for not caring as much as she wanted him to. She’d rather cut him off (Thunder). On WFWF, she meets a new man and warns him of her past, and the issues she’s had. The introspection continues as she tells her new man (possibly Clayton at the time?) that she’ll do her best to not turn into a wildfire despite her past. She then goes deeper into her past by remembering an old lover on NOTG and realises how hard life still is for her, but she starts thinking about an old friend of hers on LL and how life could be with a kid on CB, and realises that no matter how hard things are, she’ll always be full of love for the people she holds very close to her heart. She knows she’s not alone and has so much love to give. She’s now over the breakup, and makes an attempt at leaving behind the pain of her past to focus on the present. Her sister is having a baby, and Lana knows that that’s what matters the most. The album closes with SC, a love letter for Chuck to remind her she’s always here for her.

Lana reworks a song and everyone has a meltdown over changed lyrics and production choices they aren't happy with

Lana doesn't rework a song and she should have changed it up a bit

I'm with you! I feel so teased by the jazzy piano on Sweet Carolina, the horns on IYLDWM, the almost free-form drumming on Black Bathing Suit, and even the more progressive, complex piano cascading along Beautiful. I'm a huge fan of Lana backed by strings, horns, piano, etc. I would love for an album full of jazzier tunes. I have a feeling we'll get one someday.

People who say Lana has yet to top Ultraviolence must not have heard any Lana albums after it because she's topped it at least 3 times objectively

I like them. Every time I hear crows or ravens outside, I now think of this song.

This may be a bit of a hot take, but I've seen so many people mention that they've liked BB way more than they thought they would, and I kind of agree with them. As I've mentioned in other threads, I really do love all the singles, but I don't feel as though they best represented the album throughout its pre-release promotion. Dealer, IYLDWM, BBS, and others have some more grungy vibes that I feel like didn't really shine through from the promo. So many of us on here were nervous about getting an entire album full of piano ballads (which I would have been more than happy with, but this album had many more sides to it). That said, I am glad that Lana chose the songs that meant most to her, and that's the most important thing, but I do think even replacing one of the singles, or dropping one or two more from those I've listed, would have definitely given more hype to the album's release to some of her more casual listeners.

That's fair. I guess for me, personally, I just don't really see this huge downward turn in her lyricism as the albums progress. There have been cringeworthy or eye-roll worthy lyrics on all of her records. I just see a different shift in style. Of course you don't have to enjoy the shift, but I would argue that lyricism that is more matter-of-fact can still be abstract, and I find that in many ways that the tracks from post-NFR are just as rich and complex as classics like Off to the Races and Shades of Cool.

What's relatable about being drunk, traveling around the country club with sugar daddies who love cocaine or men who hit you and it feeling like a kiss? You can pick and choose almost any line from any LDR song ever to relate or not relate to it. No, I don't relate to swimming in a pool with Nikki Lane and Jenny either, but I have related to a man promising me happiness and a future, to then never show and that close intimacy with friends and family to help heal from the pain. There are valid points being brought up here, especially about the stream of consciousness nature of her recent lyricism which isn't for everyone.  If you're mad about the mythology of Lana Del Rey being shattered into pieces or just plain don't like her lyricism lately, just say that though. Don't pick and choose one single line from a four minute song and not expect people to turn that around on almost any of her past work. Y'all are acting like songs such as National Anthem, Carmen, Sad Girl, Fucked My Way Up to the Top, Lolita are straight out of the Shakespeare quartos

Expanding on what other users have mentioned, I think it’s nice that Lana seems to be settling into a soundscape that she’s been hinting at for years now.

I think that Lana’s history of drastically changing her sounds across records (trip-hop, jazzy dream pop, desert rock, folk) has made the last 3 records feel like there was no evolution of sound, but I’d argue that’s not really the case.

For example, I can’t imagine something like FIILY on Blue Banisters without it sounding completely out of place. Conversely, I can’t picture Text book on NFR! at all. Regardless, I think it’s pretty normal—even with the most renowned artists—to settle into a specific genre while still maintaining a sense of novelty.

Does that mean Lana will never branch out from her singer-songwriter, folky tendencies? Of course not—it’s worth mentioning that it wasn’t remotely long ago that she was toying with tracks like Doin’ Time.

Would I be open to seeing a huge sonic shift? Totally, but I don’t think there’s anything remotely wrong, stagnant, or lazy with where she’s at production-wise after hearing Blue Banisters in full. I think it’s similar enough to show how she wants to present herself as an artist but different enough to hold interest. Idk just my subjective thoughts on this

and I don't want to be a debbie downer, @The Love Witch, but once an artist gets older and begins to receive more acclaim and recognition for their abilities as a songwriter, they very rarely go back to the sound of the old days. They usually continue exploring and experimenting in that same universe. I love that you love those records, so I hope you continue to cherish those albums!

Very much disagree, both on a lyrical and musical basis. Sorry that you aren't enjoying the folkier sound.
