Completely agree w this. WW's lyrics, compared to the other two, were so jarring and unsettling to me (probably because I could relate lol ) and for Lana to be so vulnerable and generous enough to share with people that she struggles or did struggle with emotion regulation was huge. I guess it almost doesn't matter to me what the production then sounds like if the songwriting is as brutally honest as in WW

(though I think it actually all works brilliantly together: the lyrics paint a story of learning how to navigate emotional extremes and the production mirrors it - and i see the production towards the end as obviously chaotic and "on fire" but, probably through the steady drum pattern, it still feels like there is an attempt to keep it balanced and controlled)

Wow it’s so weird how people’s tastes can differ. I found WW to be the most powerful song of the three, especially in regards to lyrics. I was floored when I first heard it.  to me, it’s anything BUT boring!

I think it's common to see senior, established members of any industry feel a responsibility to support (and even mentor) the younger ones, especially the ones who are so young but already making brilliant moves. He might not be a *stan* but that doesn't make him disingenuous; he hasn't done anything to make me think his heart isn't in the right place.

why can't somebody in their 70s enjoy music from a different generation? i think the idea that older people can't enjoy something that's "modern" & "new" is limiting, he works in the music industry so it shouldn't be a surprise that he knows more about today's music despite his age, i think he complimented "heather" by conan gray since it was written by the artist, i don't think it's disingenuous, and even if he was praising modern artists for attention, it's better than him dragging modern artists for attention

i don't know why people are being so harsh about elton john, i personally don't know his music and i only brought up the idea of a collab as a joke, but i actually think it's cool that he praises new artists, it shows that he values today's art and i'm sure anybody would be flattered if a music icon like elton john was a fan of them, but yeah, the ageism is not cute

Exactly. It's good that he acknowledges these new artists, it is a tough industry to break into so it must feel nice when someone who has made it praises you & lets you know you are appreciated in professional circles as well.

I'd love Lana to come on the forum to tell her that she's doing amazing and is the greatest artist of all time for a lot of people and that I'm so happy she's found a way to balance creating beautiful art and also creating a life for herself that she actually wants to live without some of the unsustainable pressures that come from fame and expectations in the music industry.

Me too! Some comments in the comment section are very clever: there is one suggesting that she refers to America when she mentions her dad in Textbook. Also the banisters being painted blue then green and grey as a metaphor for bruises.
Whether correct or not, these interpretations are very interesting.
These songs have grown on me a lot, they are very strong lyrically and her vocals shine over all.
