A&W was added on the Pitchfork Selects playlist this morning, joining Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, Text Book, Black Bathing Suit, and Sweet Carolina as the only Lana tracks to make the cut (the playlist was first created in March 2020). It’s also the fifth Lana song to get the Best New Track seal of approval along with Video Games, Love, Venice Bitch, and The greatest. Ocean Blvd is coming for NFR’s wig.

hear me on this: once Tunnel gets recognised by everyone as the best album ever and gets the long awaited grammy, and then she gets an Oscar after Candy Necklace becomes the theme song of the new Willy Wonka movie, she should just rework Behind the Iron Gates and get a Nobel Prize for literature while she’s at it.

ocean Blvd is shaping up to do that for me also. Plus there seems to be A LOT to process with this one…
Norman was the last big era from her that I couldn’t listen to anything else for months…

this woman’s work ethic really is insane like, they’re amazing songs too! AND she’s toured quite a bit in the last decade as well. idk how she consistently stays so creative, it’s actually kind of a miracle. the only other artist of our time i can think of that puts out such quality content as prolifically as Lana is Adrianne Lenker whose put out 11 amazing albums since 2014

Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed, but Lana said in her interview that she originally fit 6 titles into one for the original LDR9 name.

Given that the tracklist we have now allegedly has misleading titles, do we think that Pearl, Psycho Lifeguard, etc. were original titles for the current songs on LDR9?

I suppose they could be scrapped tracks, but it’s interesting given that we know there was a shift in the tracklist names per insiders.

edit: this was talked about 1 hour ago here. ignore me

people call lana lazy and shit on her for doing minimal promotion like she’s not about to release her 10th album in 11 years, 8 of which have 14+ tracks, and she’s probably simultaneously working on 3 more as we speak

Same! Might be unpopular here, but the strings opening Ocean Blvd are just so incredible… Same with the piano in the second verse.

I can't believe how good Ocean Blvd is. It really dethroned Born to Die as her best title track for me.

considering BOZ said that she changed all of the song titles last minute to make them weirder, i literally think there were originally six title tracks 😭 although i have no idea where the “on” came from  looking forward to decoding which song was Pearl, which one was Watch Me, which one was Ring a Bell, which one was Psycho Lifeguard

I know I disappeared for a period, but if it's still worth putting my impressions here, I say that A&W has already taken the album to another level.

I can say that I only now managed to like the music and capture every element, but from the first listen, I couldn't deny that the music was amazing. Very interesting to hear. We definitely need a Lana album that is unpredictable, just like this track. I think it's this one.

I don't know if it was Boz or Kintsugi who said that the album only makes sense listening completely from start to finish, in order.

I didn't feel that on Ocean Blvd, but I definitely understood what he meant when I heard A&W: it seems like the song starts after a lot has happened, and when it ends, it's abruptly, which makes it feel like there's going to be a lot more to come.

I can clearly see the previous track (Sweet) with the early A&W piano, as well as the next track, Judah's Interlude, with a similar beat from Jimmy's part. May all tracks have these smooth transitions. It will be so nice to hear.

People care too much about what this bland ass man thinks about music

I'm honestly quite genuinely perched at how they will incorporate Venice Bitch elements in Taco Truck x VB. That's something waiting to happen.

Father John Misty could do Anaconda but Nicki Minaj could NEVER do Real Love Baby

As much as I love A&W, the more I listen, the more unsettling the song becomes.

That being said, it’s a really engaging listen, and I think she uses that to her advantage; eerie/dark themes can become unlistenable, but there’s enough sonic variation, storytelling, and shock factor to feed its replay value.

As a side note, I wish I would have known nothing about A&W prior to my first listen—think I might start avoiding spoilers next time
