Girl needs to stop telling a story about kids in a floating school or whatever and just release some boos.  Nobody cares who the principal is, or hide and seek shit.

I’m so curious as to what fucked up shit Lana’s ancestors did that’s necessary of her to heal her karmic lineage, I have some theories but nothing substantial

I will say that if any of you manifest or wish for another piano ballad album there will be consequences….

i agree with beautiful - but i do love violets for roses (except the ‘something big happening’ line is so poorly written. it makes me cringe)

Im still trying to work out whether I like this album or not. Lana’s singer songwriter sound of NFR! was perfect, but now it’s like she’s purposely making the quality of her work bad for that low budget effect and it’s kind of annoying. And by quality I mean the horrible vocal mixing on basically every new song on the record, not her songwriting / vocals. Like the mixing on Beautiful’s vocals are horrendous lol. Idk. I hope she works out how to make this singer songwriter style she’s going for work, because it’s coming off to me as disingenuous  and kind of cringey right now

I definitely agree. It does seem like the lyrics of Lana's recent work (after LFL) sound like journal entries than lyrics. Even when you read the lyrics in front of you, they're structured like excerpts from a poetry book.

I do think the issue is that the lyrics are becoming more personal than ever before which explains why it's getting harder to relate to. Lana is singing about her life, but it's too personal to the point where we the listeners can't insert ourselves into that 'world' without feeling like we're being invasive. Her old lyrics were vague enough when the stories she told could literally apply to anyone, which is why the listeners could fully immerse themselves in that world, much like an escapism.

I don't know if it belongs to this thread or the random one, but I've finally understood why I'm not vibing with Lana's music lately.

It's the autobiographic thingy for me. I just don't care.

I've always loved how she would tell stories in a way they felt universal. Even if you've never ever fell in love with an old gangster, or never got into a toxic relationship, you could get into the mood and feel every tiny bit of her raw emotions through the metaphors and vivid imagery. It might be a little specific in my case, but I've always written with Lana in the background because some of her earlier works have the same vibe as my characters's stories. Not necessarily the same story, but they're feeling the same as the personas in her songs, if that makes sense?

Anyway, old Lana songs felt like novels to me. When I was listening to them, it was like I was drown into a whole different world.
Right now, I just get the impression she's singing her diary to me (I remember @Rorman Nockwell saying something similar?) and it's so bland and so boring I can't help but skip the songs. The irony is that she's singing about more common experiences (in my humble opinion, but maybe that's because I had mommy issues too) but there's a way she's writing them that gives off a really strange self-centered vibe...?  I don't know how to explain that feeling. It's like I'm completely excluded from the story, because she's not singing about her life to tell it to us: she's singing about her for her, probably to her as well.

Or maybe it's just hat I'm not currently in the mood to listen to BB

Sorry if I'm wordy and can't get things right, I'm a mess today and I can't think straight even in French.

Edit: I feel like I've already written something like that before but I'm too burnt out to know if I'm dreaming or not. I might be rambling.

I’m sick and tired of rushed yet also lackadaisical albums and eras. LFL was her last good era: brand new songs that were written for the album and an actual GOOD album rollout with high budget videos, photoshoots, and promotion.

I’m happy Lana is content with her music and rollouts and whatever, but I’m just saying I miss the pop star moment for Lana.

I agree. There's very little progression in any of them sonically. She prioritised what she wanted to convey lyrically in those songs over the music, and it shows.
Since my first listen they have always reminded me of spoken version of VBBOTG.
Of the singles, Arcadia is the best sonically but the worst lyrically, and just to throw another unpopular opinion in on top of an already unpopular opinion , I think Blue Banisters itself is the most balanced of the four singles (but it's still a medeiocre track)

literally one of her worst songs, its so repetitive, the melody where shes like “all road that lead to you as integral to me as arteries” she just uses over and over and over again, “I can't sleep at home tonight, send me a Hilton Hotel”, “They built me up three hundred feet tall just to tear me down” , “I'm leavin' them as I was, five foot eight”

She’s written about things that aren’t entirely real in the past but she’s actually still writing about things that aren’t entirely real now too. Throughout her songwriting she’s always used her lyrics as a method of manifestation for things she wants in her life, when she was living in a trailer park she’d write about living in the glamorous part of hollywood and diamonds, getting fame noteriety and rivera’s etc, and these were often fantastical ideals that made the music to me at least very interesting. They became true for her when they manifested themselves eventually with the weird way the universe works or whatever she’s been able to get the things she writes about, almost prophetic

now she’s still trying to manifest a simple life, “give me children take away my pain”, “i’ve got a kid and two cats in the yard”, “A simple life, I chose this”, these things may not have manifested yet but she’s still writing about things that aren’t entirely real in an attempt to like bring them into her life but there really is not much interesting about the imagery she’s associated her songwriting with currently it isn’t fantastical or as you said dreamy, theres nothing too exciting about a simple life with a child and being in the backyard but it is what she thinks will give her happiness

Agree with this so much. My colleagues at work at pissed off at me because she sounds like a screeching cat through my headphones, especially on Arcadia. The music is mixed so low compared to her voice and the voice itself is unpolished, and therefore it just sounds amateurish in places. In comparison, they don't complain when I listen to tracks like Ride or Video Games, etc. Fantano is right. Something is wrong in La-Na Land this time.

His review was basically this like, he acknowledged that she experimented more on this record but he didn’t like the execution. Tbh I don’t find the review (his explanation, not the grade) to be that irrational. I obviously disagree with what he said about dealer, but I do get the BBS criticism for example and I agree with what he considered to be some of the album highlights.

Look, At the end of the day it’s personal taste, I like “get” the record, i get the symbolism of violets for roses and the banisters that are blue and green and grey etc, i can see the brilliance in her songwriting but my attitude to this whole album can be summarized in Lana’s own words which she said in an interview with Jack a year ago

“I don’t really care if you mush an amazing life story into an alternative record. If the melodies don’t stun me, I kind of don’t care. I think it’s interesting if you’re yelling and shouting and talking about where you’re going and what it’s been like, but to me that’s not a record. That’s a therapy session.”

If the fanbase really loved Blue Banisters it wouldn’t be tanking in streaming. The hype around Lana died years ago so it was always her dedicated fans not new listeners that kept her streaming up, she isn’t a singles artist and has always been an albums artist and that is from her huge audience that connected with her previous records and stream the fuck out of them constantly, and with this album the fan base just isn’t listening anymore

album releases are much like new seasons of television shows, if the last season was good, then people tune again in next season, but when the show starts getting repetitive and repeating the same storylines, then the viewership goes down

If people wanted more of this introspective very matter of fact lyricism and simple instrumentation then we’d see more people listening to it, but it appears that isnt the case

even violet the book sold more copies than this record and those are purely physical books, physical copies and streaming included of this album will probably sell less than that BOOK which I would believe only her fan base would buy,

a musical artist has less fans listening to her latest record than a book she put out just over a year ago , i think that speaks for itself in terms of our fanbases enjoyment of this record

Now i know that not EVERY fan isn’t disliking the album like i get it its personal taste but the fans who are enjoying this album are definitely in the minority and the numbers show it

also dealer is “trending” on tiktok but even Lana’s unreleased which have never seen the light of day have been more than a 100x more viral than dealer :/
