Ok this might be an unpopular opinion and I’m ready to get flamed but…

The purpose of art isn’t to write or produce things that make people feel comfortable. By writing a lyric that some construe as tone deaf she’s making us think about that statement. eg: Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable

This isn’t specifically aimed at LB (it’s more prevalent on reddit, twitter, and tt) but a few people have already mentioned about how a lot of fans are listening to this from a “comfortable” position (eg being white, and accordingly having privilege) and speaking for minorities

Idk I really haven’t conveyed my thoughts articulately at all but I think that whilst it’s very easy to argue that the ‘white woman’ lyric is tone deaf, I think it opens up interesting (and, perhaps for people who are more privileged, discomforting) discussion over white saviorisim

idk I’m interested to hear everyone’s thoughts. I know this is written badly hahaha I have (legitimate lol) brain damage

I don’t know why this is hitting me so hard. I mean, obviously the subject matter is EXTREMELY dark — but something about it is just really impacting me

It’s so beautifully written and the different vocal styles throughout the track make it seem so fresh and interesting. Idk if it’s just me, but at certain points it somehow reminds me sonically of Thunder?! I need to relisten to find the exact points

But, wow. It’s just beautiful. The tribute to the women at the end is heartbreaking. “The prostitute pickup / and the pantyhose thriller” is sticking with me. I can’t get enough of this song

As much as I would’ve loved it to have been released, I can’t imagine the moronic backlash she would have faced for “glamorising” abuse/prostitution/murder, even though nothing in this song glamourises any of that. Also, unpopular opinion but… I don’t think it would have fit on OB in the sense of the storyline. Yes it’s thematically similar in that it deals with death, legacies, abuse, general darkness etc, and it definitely would have fit sonically and lyrically, BUT..

it’s not solely autobiographical in the way that the rest of the album is, and I’m not sure how it would have fit into the overarching ‘storyline’. But I obviously wish it had been included, because it’s amazing. Not at the expense of Candy Necklace though. But they’d have been a nice A & B side release

Wow that was unnecessarily long.. but I just love Zodiac. (Which is a much better name than Purify imo, it’s less in your face and self explanatory)

And I agree with everyone else about Lana most likely feeling some sort of personal connection. So many people clowned on her for the response to the Candy Necklace video backlash, when she said she could’ve ended up in a similar position, but anyone smart knows what she meant. Considering the GK was active whilst she was living in nyc, a young woman in a somewhat transient and chaotic/unstable lifestyle.. I get what she means.

Somehow Zodiac is connected to Get Free and Patent Leather Do-Over where Lana is not forgetting the memory and legacy of women with tragic fate who were named in those songs and poem. Like keeping their legacies.

I remember hearing about this case years ago before it had been solved. Shannan's story was especially heartbreaking. I know Lana would have been crucified if she had released this song, but it's so nice to see her paying tribute to these women. After hearing this song I see Fingertips and Kintsugi in a much larger context, I feel like during OB she wasn't just coming to terms with death in her family, but also death that happened around her. It's nice to think that lyrics like "give you a blanket, your spirit can sit and watch tv by my side" could also apply to these women.

I've been following this case since it surfaced in the late 90s. That he got away with it for decades is amazing; there have been numerous programs about it, often two-or-three-parters, on Oxygen and I.D. Discovery, as well as network news shows.

But they've got him now. It was wonderful of Lana to write this tribute/memorial to the victims.

Now we just need a HQ version.

It's just a small detail, but she sings "Purify Me" four times in the chorus, for each of the Gilgo Four
