Somehow Zodiac is connected to Get Free and Patent Leather Do-Over where Lana is not forgetting the memory and legacy of women with tragic fate who were named in those songs and poem. Like keeping their legacies.

I remember hearing about this case years ago before it had been solved. Shannan's story was especially heartbreaking. I know Lana would have been crucified if she had released this song, but it's so nice to see her paying tribute to these women. After hearing this song I see Fingertips and Kintsugi in a much larger context, I feel like during OB she wasn't just coming to terms with death in her family, but also death that happened around her. It's nice to think that lyrics like "give you a blanket, your spirit can sit and watch tv by my side" could also apply to these women.

To add on to the other thing I said...

"It was a very bad time for the year of the dancer
Her sun was in Venus, the moon was in Cancer"
    +
"It was a very good year for the serial killer"

Are some of her most haunting lyrics ever.
It kinda insinuates that you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time based on where the stars are aligning, the antithesis to what she said in Lucky Ones. The juxtaposition between Frank Sinatra's pretty much innocent song and a serial killer is so interesting to me, because you never really know someone's intentions and sometimes all you can do is blame the stars because there's no other real reason to evil behavior.

It's also interesting that Lana plays around with the idea of moral corruptness & "God's Divine Plan," practically begging to be "purified" so she doesn't end up like a statistic, relating to the innocent women who had their legacy stolen and stories sold to shows like Forensic Files -- kinda giving a piece of their story back to them by namedropping them and their innocence in connection with dancing.

I was thinking about this last night! I really think zodiac would’ve tied together and create a clearer message for the album. I love candy necklace but zodiac would’ve fit perfect in between the two interludes and then put candy necklace after JB or if she scrapped JS interlude and put it there instead. I wonder if it was scrapped for candy necklace because her/her label was scared it would be controversial and not perceived well. Zodiac makes both candy necklace and A&W make more sense imo. It bridges the two together and explains more why she used the black dahlia in her candy necklace video.
maybe if zodiac was between the two interludes it would’ve been a great way symbolically going from the darker tone of JS then getting “purified” into JB which has a lighter happier tone.

There’s a lot of similarities between A&W and zodiac, I think they both signify how society blames women for things like SA or just existing, and how society discredits women. I know prostitutes have a high homicide rate and just violence rate towards them in general unfortunately.  in the past (prob still happens) don’t get as much attention during investigations. This happens to other groups of people who are often looked down upon by society example homeless people, and become forgotten. The purify me line to me sounds like she’s saying maybe if she was more “pure” these things might not have happened. Not her viewing it in a slut shaming way, but more from the lens of how society thinks about it and how they say “well that’s their job they chose it, it’s their fault” instead of having empathy and giving attention to those women because their stories are just as important.

The ending where she names the victims and says walk straight keep your head up also kinda supports this. Also the line:
Shannan Gilbert I’m walking with you
is lana saying I didn’t and I won’t forget you even though society has moved on and forgot about you.
It’s more how society blames them and just sees them as just an American whore and nothing of value to pay attention to. It’s so sad

Do we know 100% that a HQ file of this is out there somewhere? I’m sorry but I need it more than Tough and Henry and the new mystery intro song combined

ok wow I just got around to reading this thread and this has to be one of her heaviest and most stunning songs I'm overwhelmed.. when she sang the names of the victims in the last verse.... the purify me... thinking about how the bodies of the victims were being discovered around the time she was living in NY this must have been something in her head for a long time.. I fully get why this didn't make Ocean blvd but I'm really happy we got to hear it.

I really love this song and wish she released it

I feel like this fits into the narrative of Ocean Blvd so well in terms of conversation based around legacy. Specifically how she name dropped four women who had their legacy stolen from them and practically turned into folklore revolving around someone else. It's actually really beautiful how she paid tribute to women by giving them a "hey we didn't forget about you"

I also feel like Lana connects with them because during the Lizzy Grant days she was pretty much homeless and living with whatever boyfriends that would let her stay over, she seems to reflect a lot on how she got lucky with her situation and others did not. It could have happened to her and considering this took place so close to her, it probably freaked her out.

That is one of my theories......but a different one is that Lana has said in interviews and in Fingertips that she communes with atleast one spirit (her uncle Dave). Expressing grief is a way of purifying the emotional space rather than letting it fester.... people often speak with or pray too the dead for guidance from the other side....it's possible that during a lowpoint lana , dwelling on the similarities between their and her stories, reached out to the girls for insight... I know that's really unhinged sounding and extreme for the normies but i have done similar before during rough times and it fits with the outro

How are people interpreting the Purify Me lyric? There's a lot to process but my first thought is that she's pleading on behalf of the women who were killed to at least be purified in death and granted safe passage to whatever comes next, rather than punishing them any further for their "sins" in this life.

i was just thinking about that
"don't forget me... like the tunnel under ocean blvd" has a whole new meaning

it's interesting she lists the victims of this case since the gilgo killer wasn't arrested until last summer (so after she would have made this song). it sounds like shes trying to say "don't forget these victims and their stories" since the case went unsolved for so long and seemed like it was going to end up as a cold case. maybe another reason she named this song zodiac is because both the zodiac killer and the gilgo serial killer are some of the most "famous" unsolved and unknown (at the time gilgo was but zodiac has never been officially found or solved) cases in the US. The zodiac killer was in california primarily targeting straight couples, and gilgo was in new york who killed prostitutes, which is also interesting since she has connections to both of those places.

This is the Lana I crave with the thought provoking lyrics and heavy subject matter The beginning of the song reminds me a bit of FJM song “The Beginning of the 20th Century”

We need more controversial and thought-provoking "problematic" lyrics from Lana. This song should've made it to the album
