I listened to the new songs just twice because they don't have replay value imo

Rick Nowels was the GOAT. I miss him on Lana's production.

I thought hearing the NFR intrumentals would change my mind about the album, making me like it more, but sadly they don't. It just gives me even more of an ability to pick out where I wish things were different (e.g. the strings not being so muffled. I wish they were clearer). I can hear more of Jack's editing where he makes instruments jump in and out randomly, and to me it just sounds like an error even tho he did it on purpose. And don't even get me started on how generally terrible HIAB and HTD are.

I do LOVE cinnamon girl though, Doin Time is splendid, and I quite like California too, but it ends too suddenly.

the songs will never do well streaming wise. look at chemtrails - super smalll numbers. the slower her music is, the less interested people are. with the exception of NFR which was just-blowing even at nearly glacial pace.

she's gonna fade into obscurity if she doesn't start working on more singles that are not, well, miserable.

I’m going to get shit for this but I find NFR to be her most unauthentic piece of work. This album in general just doesn’t have that same feeling as her past work. It’s not the aesthetics, it’s not the production, it’s just the way how her emotions are presented on the album. It’s like she’s holding them back and is restrained. The romance and the sadness are just not… there. That’s one thing about Lana that has always stood out about her than other pop artists, it’s the way how she presents her emotions. Yeah some people like to shit on her for being overly emotional or in other words “pretentious” but that’s how she fucking expresses herself. That’s what makes her Lana. Even some of the controversial cuts on LFL sounded more authentic than the material off of NFR. And even Honeymoon, which seems like an acquire taste for some fans, has her belting out lyrics on GKIT and seducing vocals on MTWBT. However, NFR doesn’t showcase much on the more romantic and sadder tracks. The instrumentation doesn’t bring much to the table either. And I can’t bare to hear How to Disappear on that awful fucking production.

I hate to say this but NFR was a bland and overly hyped album that the anti-Lana critics could only handle and enjoy.

I liked the songs on release BUT that was just hype imo
they have no melody and the lyrics don't mesh well together...
idk they're missing something and they are some of her worst work to date

tulsa jesus freak was her last powerful, melodic song imo

Yesss ive been thinking about this, like what changed lana why why why. Those 3 songs have absolutely no melody

Damn so many ppl unstanning here its depressing but i feel the same. I really thought i would stan her till i die but this piano poetry thing is not it

Yeah no this is exactly what it is. When I listened, I pictured the lyrics typed up on a page like in Violet and heard her reciting them like the spoken word. Maybe that's my own fault because I have very good imagination, but they just seemed to fit.
And I'm not even saying that there's anything inherently wrong with turning a poem into a song, just that, coupled with the very bare instrumentation, that's how these seem to me.
I enjoy them for what they are but I don't find them to be fully developed songs, especially not when compared to her past work. Music is part of a song and the instrumentation in these doesn't match the lyrical depth and emotion and I find it jarring.
The argument can be made that that was done so as not to overwhelm her (Mike said as much) but at what point does the music just become inconsequential? And then if it's inconsequential then why is it even there and why aren't the words presented as just a poem to give them focus, and therein lies my issue.

    Yes I 100% agree
She can, obviously, sing about whatever she wants but if she's electing to sing about everyday normal life (eg: Chunk baking a cake) then I need more than someone playing the same four chords on a piano in the background. Spilling some tea about her mother shouldn't be the main point of interest.
And this is my unpopular opinion not my unpopular objective fact
  12. pwussi liked a post in a topic by Rorman Nockwell in Unpopular Lana Opinions
What are you even talking about? It's my opinion, not an objective truth.

It IS fundamentally subjective and that's why you have an opposing opinion. And both are okay.

I really didn’t care for the new tracks and Mike Dean’s production really underwhelmed me. I feel like I’m missing something with these tracks but I guess that’s how some people felt when NFR was released. I do like Textbook overall but the BLM line is cringy sorry

I'm just gonna skip over this album (if the rest of the songs also sound like these 3) and just hope for the next one lol
It's not that I necessarily want BEATS or some big bop song, I just want some decent production, kind of like how the chorus change up part in Text Book moved me for a while. I'm tired of all these stripped down piano ballad snooze fests, it all sounds the same over and over and each era I like less and less of them, this time being zero so far

I love her to death like I've never been into an artist the way I have with Lana... She's been a massive part of my youth and life and I doubt I'll ever completely let go of her, so this is really hard for me, but I do look forward to a future era

Also I've seen people who've posted similar opinions get chewed up lmao - just a reminder that this is an opinion thread, and most of us are fans of many many years. Everyone should be able to share what they love and don't love without someone feeling personally attacked damn

Well... it's been two days since the release and I think the initial excitement I had for this triple release has died down a bit. I find the so called title track to be somewhat forgetful, dare I say it's in the same league as 'LMLYLAW', it's not a bad song, but it's kinda dreary. I initially did not care all that much for 'Wildflower Wildfire', but it's a pleasant song, it's definitely a departure from the type of piano ballads we had on the past two records. It's a good song. 'Text Book' remains the superior song out of the three imho. The melody is what stands out the most to me, I like how it breaks down in three distinct part, it's giving me 'West Coast' meets 'Get Free' and I like that about it. I feel like all these songs are very personal to her... but does that make them better/greater for that reason? That's debatable. I'm not going to comment on the lyrical nature of the songs just yet, I like to have the context of the full album for that, but I think they are certainly interesting in that regard.

I agree with other people in this thread, I did not care much for 'NFR!', despite it being a successful and critically acclaimed album, it did not and still does not resonate with me, except for a few key songs, but y'all already know this. Unlike some other people, I have overall enjoyed 'Chemtrails' a whole lot more than 'NFR!', but again, except a few key tracks, I do not find myself re-listening to the album all that much. I guess I have just been slowly groing out of Lana, her albums used to be an experience from start to finish, but since 'Lust for Life' I have not found myself able to enjoy the albums all the way through, and after the first couple listens I find myself skipping songs more often than not.

I have hopes for 'Blue Banisters' to change that. I guess we'll see.

    I don’t like the new songs ? I fear she’s lost me
  17. pwussi liked a post in a topic by sunday afternoon in Unpopular Lana Opinions
I find the 3 singles above the Chemtrails album that I really didn't like, I like the fact that they talk about her private life but they are still weak even if I see where she wants to go.

I agree with your opinions and I miss part of her. I know that everything is far away now, she has grown up; evolved blah blah but I need to fall in love with her songs again. Like the very first time I heard each new song in his repertoire, going from Born to die to Lust for life, this excitement, the heart that rises... She misses this time where her songs were very marked and timeless, without boredom.

Damn, I'm hoping that the leaks will give me that because I know that his new music / poem will no longer have this effect.

Mike lied saying that these 3 tracks would be fire, yes they are from Lana but it's not as hot as that and we come back to the same point: there is better but we are going in circles.

Sometimes I would like her to stop taking herself for a poet who writes so many things that they no longer make sense. I think we praise her writing so much for nothing and now she does too many headlines thinking that every stroke of the pencil will be genius. It could, but it is no longer the case.
I really need to travel again through her songs, to feel a texture, a heaviness, a marked universe. She set the bar too high to give up.

I think she has no more inspiration and the fact that she tries to do too many songs as if her life depended on it is damaging her talent. We revolve around the same themes, the same sounds, the same universes, everything is so similar since NFR that we do not realize that she is going to release another album...

She is productive but more in a good way, for me it takes out funds from the drawer that should remain in its hard drive. So its productivity is not really useful because the songs are less quality, she has become lazy through the promo, photos, covers... We do not know where we are.

The girl relies a lot on her prestigious name and she knows it, but until when? It's frustrating.

I feel you, I'm also starting to not enjoy her new stuff anymore. It's simply not my taste. TO ME(!) BB is so boring it's pretty much unlistenable, TB is meh and the only really good part in WW are the "hot" lines. It's kind of like falling out of love in a long term relationship, right? I've been a fan since early 2013...

And then we get leaks like Thunder and I wonder how this project was never released. Like, privately she still makes the kind of music I love (with great lyrics!) but for some reason keeps it to herself.

And Courtney. You forgot Court almost burning her house down. lol

    I agree btw.

I hope she doesn't recycle the "no more candle in the wind" line again.

Lana has been really losing me as a fan since NFR. I only like 3 songs off of that record and even then I skip to the bridges. I only like 1 song from COCC and I dislike all of the new singles.

In my personal opinion, idk how anyone can defend her lyrics NFR-BB. They’re astoundingly poor. Sure she does have a few gems but as whole??

Her melodies are much poorer now too. What happened to the structured, well thought out, beautiful melodies of songs like Carmen, Is This Happiness, Dark Paradise, The Blackest Day, Sad Girl, etc...? Even her unreleased songs have better melodies

I’m not even going to touch the production because most of us agree it’s lacking in a lot of ways and that is equally her fault as it is the producers.

Visually... there’s no effort. Pure laziness and that’s disappointing. Ultimately the visuals are part of her job too and she clearly doesn’t give af anymore. It’s not cute. Critics and lay people don’t really give that much of a fuck about her visuals, it’s the fans that care the most so the fact that she’s not putting any effort in is telling.

Her shows now? I wouldn’t pay to see them anymore. Unnecessary dancers, backing vocals that are too loud, not singing at random times, etc... Before it was her showcasing her amazing talent. A lot of the time now, it’s just singing quietly behind her backing vocals doing a pathetic ‘dance’. The Lolita slut drop was iconic but the other little dances are just not it. She does have some amazing moments still but not enough for me to buy a ticket

Again, I’m not going to touch on her controversial statements, lying to fans, disregarding fans, completely unprofessional behaviour, tone-deaf comments, those videos of her driving recklessly, etc...

She and her music have changed and I don’t like it. Obviously artists change over time and that’s fine but it’s just sad that I’m not vibing with this change like other fans are. I loved her so much for so many years and it’s just depressing that I’m not liking who she is now. I suppose I’ll always have BTD-L4L
Since some of u crazy Lana stans can’t read, I’m gonna say again that this is just my opinion, NOT FACT

I'm sorry but I can't stop laughing on this because it's so true, it's probably my biggest problem with her lyrics recently. I always thought it was so lazy of her to do this but I thought I was on my own on this fdskgdfjkgjdkf

I listen to Valley Of The Dolls way more than NFR (title track). I just really like the very calm atmosphere of the song .

the only part of the 3 new songs I like is the chorus of Text Book, if you asked me to recite a single line or melody from any of the songs apart from that 1 chorus i wouldn’t be able to. everything abt them is just forgettable and the mixing on all of them is trash
  24. pwussi liked a post in a topic by Rorman Nockwell in Unpopular Lana Opinions
I enjoyed COCC but it was too short and everything she's done since NFR seems rushed, imo
The 3 singles are definitely more like poems with music. There's no emotion in the instrumentals and tbh, Jack's work on VBBOTG had more sonic variation than these "songs" do (think of the final poem ... Linoleum?)
Mike Dean lied when he said Wildflowers was fire. There IS no fire and that's the problem. There's no anger, no sadness ... except in her voice.
You can't take a poem, employ repetition on a few lines and then say it's a song. It isn't.
And as I said above, the sheer extent of the namedropping makes these feel like personal diary entries which again, makes them seem more poem-y.
    "Jenny's smoking by the pool"
    "Chuckie's baking a birthday cake"
    And whatever the fuck else
I do not care, idk about anyone else
Anyway I'm glad that others are enjoying these but I suspect the replay value won't be there

The 3 singles r a mess, she shouldve released it as poems. She fell off hard after nfr
