Exactly like Billie herself is heavily influenced by Lana. I think Nas has proven himself to be a mainstay because he’s a genius marketer, but some of these other names are less likely to mean anything in 5-10 years.

I find Lana to be very resilient, because despite being at the center of some controversies and her albums getting ridiculous negative backlash from the getgo, she still managed to make a name for herself in the industry and even be considered a trailblazer years down the line. I hate award shows and their politics as much as the next person, but she's really thriving despite some naysayers, never missing a beat to criticize her.

Not to talk down on them at all because I think they're very talented in their own right, but I think it's super interesting that the artists Lana has inspired are also being honored. It really shows how influential her music is to newer artists even in small ways. We've gotten to a point almost 10 years after BTD where we can now see the fruits of Lana's labor. She is just such an incredible artist and I am so happy over this

Exactly bestie. This is why I'm generally annoyed by award ceremonies because they always give in to hype, thus tarnishing their credibility as a committee. I mean there's literally an unreleased Lana song that is suspected to date back to as early as 2004 (almost 20 years ago!!) Even though it's not under Lana Del Rey, it just shows that Lana has so much more artistic experience and validity

it's funny because artists like olivia rodrigo & billie eilish are very new compared to lana, they're likely only included because they're very popular, it's silly to call them "decade defining" musicans when they've only been in the industry for a few years, didn't olivia rodrigo hit it big with "driver's license" in 2020?

i'm pretty sure a good chuck of those artists in general are "new" and/or wouldn't really be considered "decade defining"

edit: i just saw you deleted your original comment lol

I love that too, but UV and HM deserve as much praise. If not more.

She’s certainly the most deserving artist in that list of names. Lil Nas X is cool also.

I can see Lana rolling her eyes as she reads this. Yes! It’s rightfully deserved, and later’s better than never —— but you’re nearly a decade late, Pitchfork. Too much has happened since your review for a lame extra 2.3 points (really? Only that much?) to “revisit” anything.

This cultural reset and then when courtney love opened for her it would be so cool the comparison of these two moments

Some of these are probably less traditional but I feel are still important in her life as an artist:

•SNL: both a power move & would make for good commentary on Lana’s end.

•Atlanta, Georgia (2/5/2018): The concert following the stalking charge with Michael Hunt—I would imagine it’s an important performance for Lana & likely helped shape her connection to fame

•Kim & Kanye Wedding: Honestly, I’m mostly just curious to see what it was like, but I think it could transition nicely into other interactions with celebrities

•Williamsburg Live Songwriter’s Competition (Pawn Shop Blues): Not only does it segue into her current relationship with fame, but it also features some of her best songwriting as well—especially at such a young age!
