Unpopular Lana Opinions

Recommended Posts

From what I can see, BTD stans hold the album over Lana's head. Everything that comes out regarding her (photoshoots, songs, album covers etc) is endlessly compared to BTD. Obviously BTD was a successful album for her and gained her a lot of loyal fans, it's when I even discovered her, but it's like she can't do anything without people complaining they wished it was still that era.

It reminds me of this post I found on tumblr:

I want to quote and like this a thousand times

Don't get me wrong, I love BtD and Video Games was the song that introduced me to LDR and I was entranced with the album when it was released but now that I've listened back to it so many times (and after the Lana hype/initial hate has blown over) I've realised that it's not really, for lack of a better way to put it, Lana. When VG became massive, BtD was released and it was in a similar vein to VG. I feel like the whole of BtD was based around this idea of a depressed Lana who we heard about in VG and BtD and there are only a few moments on the whole record where we actually see the vision that Lana initially had for it, like the trap-y elements on DMnD.

Like with many record labels, I'd say Interscope/Polydor saw the success VG was having and were like 'holy crap! we need to release VG2 and see if it does as well!' When BtD was a success too, they probably told Lana that we needed 12 VGs and BtDs. With a little protest from Lana, songs like DMnD managed to make it onto the record but it was primarily songs that sounded like VG and BTD.

Ultraviolence, however, really feels Lana. The songs have more variety and I don't know if that was Lana who managed to make the change or maybe Dan Auberbach and that's why I stan over the UV era more than the BTD/P era.

The example I like to use is on the cover arts for both albums: On the cover for BtD, Lana looks stiff as a board an uncomfortable as hell aka the Lana that Lana didn't set out to be. It got her the sales and the recognition she deserved but it wasn't her. The UV cover art shows a more relaxed, animated and comfortable Lana aka the Lana that Lana is pleased to be. The UV Lana isn't as successful but it's the Lana that Lana wanted to be. The Honeymoon cover art shows Lana on a tour bus and I interpret that as Lana riding on the critical success UV Lana got and taking those ideas even more into the Lana that Lana truly wants. She's happy and pleased to be this Lana more than the BtD Lana or the UV Lana. Of course, Lana says that HM is more in the vein of BtD than UV so I might be completely wrong here.

I'm not hating on BtD in any way and I completely appreciate people stanning over it more than any other Lana eras but, like @ said, I feel like the stans really want the BtD era back and I don't think it'll ever fully come back. Maybe fragments will, but I feel like that's the most manufactured Lana we've ever seen and I don't think Lana was fully comfortable with being that Lana.

How did that one come about?

because of the song being about someone who copied Lana; everyone seems to think it's Taylor she's referencing. as much as i HATE Toilet Swift, it is clearly not about her. my bets are 100% on Lorde

Someone in the Lana fandom comes up with an idea/interpretation and then everybody runs with it, I've noticed that this has happened several times already, like with the Ultraviolence video where somebody on youtube commented that it must be about Jim Morrison and Pamela's relationship and then everybody took it as the truth and most recently how somebody mentioned on youtube that Terrence is Bowie's half-brother and now everybody believes that

Neither country Swift or Pop Swift sound like they've copied Lana at allll wtf. I can see it being about Lorde though, especially with vocals like the ones on Royals and at the start of Team. I like all three artists mentioned and I can see that Lorde has almost definitely taken inspo from Lana and Taylor's Wildest Dreams, like every single reviewer ever, clearly sounds like something pop Lana would do

Lorde got a recording contract at 12. Who has she been fucking to get anywhere in her career?

Lorde got a recording contract at 12. Who has she been fucking to get anywhere in her career?

the song isn't written about Lorde persay, but more written to her. she addresses Lorde in lines like "mimicking me is a fucking bore" and "i'm a dragon you're a whore" Lana is claiming that she herself is the one who "fucked her way" up to fame; she's sarcastically saying "oh i have no talent so i slept with men to get into the industry". i've never believed that Lana is talking about anyone else but herself in the song - however, it is addressed TO Lorde though, if that makes any sense

I, fucking, love High By The Beach. I really, really, REALLY love it. It's so stupidly in-tha-face and super subtle at the same time and the melody is just hardcore porn to me. It's gangsta, it's poppy, it's fun and it's empowering as hell. It's both not serious at all and sub-zero chill. I love the lyrics of it, I think they're brilliant and very memorable. And on the other hand, to my great despair, TLY leaves me completely emotionless. I think I'm not mature enough to like this song, because I can definitely sense the beauty in it and I totally see why it's dear to Lana, but I feel like I lack something to appreciate it, maybe some song references or something, the experience of what she's talking about perhaps, and the fact that it's jazzy is a big turn-off for me. I wonder how it'll turn live though. I'm completely convinced I'll end up falling in love with it, as I did for fucking 300 songs already, my God the power she has over my brain is insane I never would have thought

I hate the theory that Fucked My Way is about Taylor Swift. There's no logic to it in the slightest.

See I feel the exact opposite about TS and Lorde. To me there is no connection at all between Lorde and Lana besides Lorde saying one time in an interview that she didn't like the supposed ideas and messages behind Lana's songs. I don't think Pure Heroine sounds like BTD at all, period, at any part. No similar visuals, no similar topic they wrote about, PH doesn't even have any strings in it, it literally just has beats like most other pop albums? I guess I also just don't want to think Lana would write something like that about/towards a teen :/ (not that its much better otherwise)

With TS there's Wildest Dreams, the Style video (but that came after UV), Jamie King, and obviously the Ride video thing. I remember Lana said she had found her video soulmate with Mandler but never used him again after the IKYWT mess. Why? I just feel like Lana has way many more reasons to dislike TS than Lorde. But I don't know what she thinks.

Realistically she probably doesn't like either of them since they are best friends and the song is about one or the other.

Hopefully this doesn't come across as aggressive. You know I  you, just see it different. :) I'd really love to hear in a lot more detail why you think its Lorde and not TS! Because I don't get the Lorde comparisons at all lol.

Oh but I do agree that the "fucked my way up to the top" is Lana singing about herself. I see it as a "look bitch, I was willing to do this and am willing to do anything to stay on top so back up, this is my field".

Goddesses don't speak in whispers. They scream.

It annoys me so much so many people think that she means to say that her "opponent" fucked her way up to the top. It's obvious that she tongue-in-cheek uses something people have claimed she herself did in order to attack her, which makes it obvious she doesn#'t care and that THIS IS HER SHOW, even IF she would have archieved it this way. By ironically accepting the accusation, she takes the power away from it.

Just do it. Just do it - don't wait!

Yes it is so obvious the track is about Lana! People are always wanting to make something more out of something that isn't lol. I feel like it is a dis-track to all those people who doubted her or questioned her success and how she got there. Like fuck you I'm here and I know what you think but I don't give a shit because I run this show! I love the song to be honest lol. It's so feisty and when I'm wanting to feel SEXYYY I turn it way up lol!
