    I think this might be my favourite track she's released so far during this era. I don't really mind A$AP's verse either (as much as I do in Summer Bummer, that song really could've done without him)
    Although, I can't bring myself to hear "You want money, groupie love" I only hear "You want my groupie love."

    Um Just occurred to me that there is a black beach in I think Iceland...but i doubt Lana has ever actually been there... Then it occurred to me that black sand is a reference to HEROIN...
    Ummm so basically I think it makes her story with heroin more vibrant, and I am SO curious to know more

    'Cocaine and Heroin and blood red sangrias... we travelled for weeks just to escape your demons'...

    Love this dark bitch

    wow, if BAR hadn't leaked we would've got an amazing video with great storyline ☹️ Instead we got WM and... that video.

    We've cracked the code for this music video! We already talked about this in the LDR6 Pre-Pre-Release thread, but I don't want it to get lost there (and also because it was off-topic), so that's why I'm adding my analysis to this thread (with receipts!)

    The scenes shot with Rich Lee were probably not intended to be for WM, but they were for both BAR AND Yosemite. Why? Because...
    - White Mustang (the song) wasn't recorded at the time the music video was shot (hence her not singing in the video). Also, she said that she wrote Cherry and White Mustang at the end of writing Lust for Life in this interview;
    - There seems to be a match between the unfamiliar melody Lana hummed in this behind the scenes video and the few lines of Yosemite she sang at her LFL listening party (especially the 'adlibby' way she sings "reasons");
    - In the same behind the scenes video, Lana was asked by someone if she wanted to do the "other song" to which she responds "yes", which means that they were shooting scenes for at least two songs;
    - Lana herself had said that BAR and Yosemite were like yin and yang in the same interview posted above.

    I think we could've gotten an amazing cohesive narrative in terms of just these two songs with amazing visuals. That's why I think it's so unfortunate that BAR leaked and that we can't see the rest of what Lana had in mind for the narrative that is BAR-Yosemite.

    I had never really cared for Yosemite, but now I do. I really wish to read the lyrics of Yosemite someday so we could further analyse why it would be the yin to BAR's yang. We already know that there is somewhat of a repetition of the lines "you did it (all for fame)" in BAR and "we did it for fun, we did it for free" in Yosemite.

    And we also know about the setting of BAR-Yosemite: "from Topanga to further up north" (from the same interview posted above). Does anyone know if the 405 she drives through is the route from Topanga to Yosemite?

    PS. The links to the videos directly skip to the right parts of what was said exactly.

    Beaches are always a theme in Lana music, i don't think that disproves anything.

    You're stating summer bummer lyrics like they're fact, have they been written down anywhere to confirm black beaches? I'd like to see it, she may have on Instagram maybe but not that I've seen

    I know how anti speculation Lana fans like to be and how ferociously they'll defend their ideas of her (why I often won't bother posting speculations on the forum), I just find black beaches a weird metaphor. But in a song with a lot of botany imagery, that also discusses a garden being burned, in my mind black beeches fit.

    I also enjoy looking at Lana's recurring lyrical themes collectively, so I'd be interested to know if it's yes another beach reference or her fawning over her beloved trees again like in 'underneath the pines'.

    I'd say I wished she'd included a lyric book this era but they were always wrong before so I get why she didn't bother

    Anyway don't mind me, I know the responses will be 'it's obviously beaches'. I just wish we got a little more information about each song to clear this shit up.

    People meeting her everyday and not asking the important questions like wtf are the bg lyrics in Cherry? Fake fans

    Just found out through filtering that they use a sample from High By The Beach in 13 Beaches. They slowed it down and changed pitch a bit - Probably some moderate effects but it's nice to hear considering this is HBTB's less enthusiastic twin sister.

    "maharaja" (maha=superior to; raja=king) is a Hindi word which means "king of kings" (emperor?)

    Um it's not just about the eyes, it's also a about the ears. The video should complement the song rather than try to supplement it. The video just doesn't "fit" the song. Same with 'Freak'.

    no tea but y’all really take it too seriously
    i don’t care what she does as long as she’s releasing some fire music
    i can compile them all into an album on its own nbd
    she needed to ditch half of those old ass songs anyway like i think count contessa & venus & shit like that should just be left alone at this point

    although low key she ruined in excelsis.. those snippets sound great but the first, slow snippet sounded perfect

    yes. They were recorded in the same month that she recorded Big Eyes and I Can Fly, along with these three, Shades of Cool and Is This Happiness.

    I guess we kind of have an idea of what it would sound like now since Your Girl, Yes to Heaven, and Fine China have leaked, and those are all pre-dan, right?
  22. HollywoodHills liked a post in a topic by Honeymooner in Ultraviolence without Dan Auerbach?
    Wow, thanks for the great responses, everyone!

    I had never heard the West Coast radio mix, but I just played it last night after seeing your reply. It's quite different than the album, especially in the way that the tempo does not slow down at the chorus like it does on the album.

    Auerbach didn't produce any of those? It's interesting, "Is This Happiness" has sounds reminiscent of the Auerbach-produced tracks. Although his tracks didn't have any strings, so I can see where there'd be a difference. That song does have some interesting distortion effects, though, on the strings and otherwise. Why do you say "thank god she enlisted him?" Do you feel that those tracks aren't as good as the Auerbach-produced tracks? (Not looking for a debate here, just wanted to know.)

    It'd be cool if we could hear the pre-Auerbach versions, but that probably won't ever happen.

    Demos are one thing, but the fully-produced pre-Auerbach album would be something completely different (and exciting!).

    It's true, they probably would. But maybe sometime down the road, she'll release an Ultraviolence "box set" that has both her original version and the reworked Auerbach version. We can dream... Speaking of which, I kept reading that she was supposed to be re-releasing her "Lizzie Grant aka Lana Del Ray" album sometime in 2012 or 2013; at least, she kept saying that back then. But it never happened... maybe Paradise took over and she never went back to the other?

    I thought some Ultraviolence tracks had leaked as well. I remember reading that "Black Beauty" had leaked, and she had commented that she was discouraged, but was still going to release the album.

    Even before Auerbach came along, Lana had said in discussing the album that the tracks were still "dark and cinematic" like Born To Die, but more "stripped back." Perhaps that means not as lush-sounding, but still with more of the string/orchestral effects that she had on Born To Die and Paradise. "Old Money" was produced by Dan Heath, and it maintains more of the Born To Die sound (although it's not as lush-sounding as other Born To Die and Paradise tracks).

    Radio.com quoted Lana as saying "I do feel discouraged, yeah. I don’t really know what to put on the record. But I guess I could just put them on and see what happens. Each time I write… I’ll never write a song if I don’t think it’s going to be perfect for the record." This was from 2013, and in the interview, she said that it happened about 3 years ago, which would've been around 2010-2011.  Those albums weren't out yet, but she may have already been working on songs. They were probably very early versions.

    Do you mean Ultraviolence the album, or "Ultraviolence" the song? I remember reading about an early version of the song that she was calling "Melancholia."

    Yeah, she has expressed on numerous occasions that she was very happy with the results, and was glad that she had worked with Dan. I would just love to hear the pre-Auerbach version for comparison's sake.
