Lemonade Tears

I'm a little sad about it but the magic is gone for me too. I've listened to LMLYLAW and Summertime about 2-3x and not at all to YNWA. I'm just not that interested in these songs. And then her overall behaviour in 2020 left a very bitter taste in my mouth.
Wouldn't be so bad if I had a new substitute for Lana, but really there's no other musician who created such a unique world of their own and fascinates me as much. 
I mean, it's not that important but being so fascinated with an artist is just really fun.
 
I'm not yet ready to leave though. I still have hope her work is gonna fascinate and excite me again. I'm determined to work this out!  

except for the odd song here and there, it’s rare-ish for me to actively dislike any song she’s put out.... but now im finding myself actively hating the last three she’s put out in a row  YNWA, Summertime and LMLYLAW. im beginning to think she’s lost everything that made her appeal to me in the first place, or at least gone in a direction i no longer relate to, which is sad because of how hard ive stanned from BTD all the way to NFR. although im hoping that cotcc in full will prove me wrong. 
 
even if this is it though ill still be grateful for all the great albums and unreleased that she’s provided me with  

I always start my NFR! album listening with Mariners Apartment Complex. " You took my sadness out of context " is a  better opening line than   " You fucked me so good  that I almost said I love you" btw
 
Speaking of title tracks..the LFL & NFR!  ones are my least favourite title tracks ...hoping for COTCC to surprise me with a title track that’s good as BTD, UV & HM
 
 

I wouldn't say I lost interest in her as an artist, I'm still a hopeful fan and very looking forward to next releases and stuff. But, you do hit the nail when you say that her work has little to no replay value nowadays. I didn't like 'Lust for Life' as an album, but the songs I loved on there, I loved them and I'm still listening to them to this day. On 'NFR'... I'll listen to the title track sometimes even if the opening line is cringy, or sometimes if I feel like it 'Venice Bitch' or 'The greatest', but that's honestly about it.

i've been afraid to say this on here but yeah  imo her best covers are of folk/rock, and if she's doing jazz I think she has to add her own twists to it, which is why I think the Other Woman is her best jazz cover (and the cover itself is not entirely jazz either)

How to Disappear is perfect and misunderstood. It's like a studio album's version of a laptop demo if that makes sense, and I mean that as a compliment. It's completely charming and meaningful and the more I hear it the more I love it.

Big Eyes is a masterpiece and one of her best songs

i struggle to remember which shows are from la to the moon and which shows are from the nfr tour because there was literally no growth between those tours they both bore me and they both look exactly the same... i dont even know which tour had that big swing

while I love WC I think Brooklyn Baby deserves some, if not more, love as well
 
I feel like it's not exactly hated on here, but I do wish HIADT got more love too. IMO it's one of the most melancholic, intimate, and lonely songs I've heard in general by any artist that honestly makes me uncomfortable at times (especially because she compares herself to Sylvia Plath, which is a really serious topic regarding mental health tbh). Everything flows so well lyrically and the piano is so minimal that her voice and lyrics as a singer/songwriter are what matter the most. I believe she did not have a song in her discography that was literally just about her sadness-but-not-sadness/depression/dysthymia(?) before HIADT (other than Is This Happiness [underrated as well!!], but that type of sadness is tied to another figure, whereas the sadness of HIADT seemingly stems from within), which maybe is why I'm so drawn to it.

And somehow this got me thinking that NFR! is her least " Lana sounding " album and ironically it's the album that got praised the most by critics and the GP. Don't get me wrong  I love NFR!...it kinda was refreshing somehow because her voice wasn't drown in reverb, more instrumental parts instead of bridges  the production was more lowkey/ stripped back overall..it kinda lacked something that you can find on all of her previous albums.. and as much I love NFR! I hope she switches it up for her future  albums...you know NFR! was something different & refreshing but it wouldn't be that way if we get like 3 other albums with the same production...and I trust  her...all her others albums  have a more Lana feel to them and still are totally different from each other. I probably miss some bass & the little details they did the most

I thinks it’s because Jack is more of a pop producer, not an alternative producer. His stuff is very commercial and clean (for lack of a better word). I loved Lana because of how raw and impactful her music was but now I feel like it’s made to be more radio-friendly and critic pleasing.
 
Also kinda think it’s because she moved to LA. Her personality has definitely changed like wanting to become an insta baddie, vlogging, becoming more mainstream in general (like writing slang into her songs like lit, collabing with artists that she has no business collabing with), etc... Of course there’s nothing wrong with a change in personality. Everybody grows and changes but I wish that it would translate better into her music and her previous image. We’ve been so used to unique, vintage Lana and now all of a sudden we’re getting smacked in the face with mainstream Lana. I wish there was a better transition between these two in her body of work so that it’s easier for us fans to digest

i feel like she downgraded the second she met Jack. Even the demo of Votd that she sent to him as inspo sounds better than most of the songs on the nfr. Lmlylaw sounds straight out of nfr. Its just getting boring and repetitive.It even has the exact same short melody in the background as most of nfr songs. Summertime was finally something new and you can see how much fans liked it. If Lana stays with Jack for the next albums, i think fans will slowly begin unstanning

I wouldn’t be as big of a fan of hers as I am now. Her first 4 albums are definitely a different sound and world than NFR, and my music taste falls more along the records that made me fall in love with her and her world. I’m not saying NFR is a bad album, it’s just vastly different than the world she had built and not so much my cup of tea. Do I want her to go back to an old sound? Heck no! I want her to evolve and grow. But if anything LMLYLAW is NFR 2.0 and I can’t help but be a little more disappointed. 
 
After QFTC and her instagram post of her stripping in Tropico with the caption ‘#fuckoff’ I got really hopeful. THATS what I want. Bad bitch, idgaf vibes. I’m hoping Chemtrials touches on that more and is a return to form.

I probably came off ruder than I intended. All I’m trying to say is it’s completely okay that some people see NFR as an amazing body of work and don’t see the criticisms I have for it. But at the same time, some of us can’t help but feel disappointed that part of the Lana appeal seemed (to me, not saying everyone thinks the same say) to fade away a little. It isn’t just her lyrical content, I want beats in her songs, I want strings, I want ambiance, I want to really feel like I’m in her world. Norman was good storytelling wise (and having Violets tie into it was an amazing touch) but it is slightly annoying that you can’t say you miss all these things without being labeled a BTD fanboy who just needs to ‘move past’ the album that initially hooked me.

I definitely don’t think BTD is her best, and I don’t want a BTD 2.0 (or 2.0 of any record she’s made) she’s had so many iconic lyrical moments throughout her career (her song writing definitely didn’t just magically stop with BTD), it just seems like the girl who came full circle and sang “Sometimes it feels like I've got a war in my mind I want to get off but I keep riding the ride” went back to singing “lying on your chest, in my party dress, I’m a fucking mess” like...where’s the fire.
 
this is the unpopular opinion thread and I know me not liking NFR is a very unpopular opinion.
 
she went from having lush strings, ambiance sprinkled throughout her songs (God Knows I Tried had crickets, 13B had SO many little sound effects and noises that made the song so full) and NFR had strings that don’t add a thing to the overall song and hardly any kind of beats (CG being an exception, I would have killed for a full song that sounds like the last minute)
 
I can be critical and still like her
 
edit: plus, the two songs I’m quoting as saying I miss aren’t even BTD. They’re paradise (which yes is an EP but also feels very much like it’s own body if work)
