  9. Phenomena liked a post in a topic by sunday afternoon in Where Are You Now As A Lana Del Rey Fan? / What Does Being A Lana Del Rey Fan Mean To You?
Are you a newer fan, or have you known about her for years now?

Fan since August 2011, I cried a lot when Amy died and Lana arrived afterwards, I took refuge in her. An article from a music site had presented her as a "new artist who is making the buzz this week", I thought that she would be an artist not very interesting but that I will listen to see because I had no more homework to do and then...
Video games was like love at first sight, I can't explain. I remember sitting in front of my computer and not talking until the end. I knew from this video which relates to memories, this homemade, this voice, this melancholy that Lana was gold, she already had a great mastery. I classified it immediately among the great ones. I did not doubt for a moment, I knew she would follow me all my life.

Has your interested grown, or dwindled?

I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed with her albums and her projects since Lust for life. But my interest in her does not diminish because she is fascinating. I like to know what she is doing, where she is going, the meaning of her songs, her lyrics, her life. Her life is connected to music and I really like that. If I remain faithful it's because I still hope that she will make an album with BTD, UV, a bit of HM and LFL.
On the other hand since NFR!, I haven't listened to her projects more than 5 times (except Wildflower Wildfire, Blue Banisters and Text Book which I like), the rest is anecdotal. But I wait. For example these latest shoots are the best in a long time, so it's not lost. Every news of her is cool.

Where are you now in your fan journey?

I don't really know... I can't say I'm what you call a fan because I never bought anything from her and I never got the chance to see her in concert. The only thing I bought from her is the Born to die album (although I almost bought Paradise and UV on vinyl - damn nice boxes! - I wish I had because they didn't were no longer available a few weeks later). But I think the material is nothing. I have immense respect for her work and her journey, all the creativity she can give. So I'm a fan of the shade, it doesn't prevent having an unlimited admiration for what it can do.

I must say, it has been quite the journey.

She is only a few years older than I am and I've been following her work since 2012. There were times when people questioned my interest in her, deeming her early work to be very "teenage-y" in subject matter or "superficial" and her image "carefully crafted". Women who liked Lana Del Rey were "trying-too-hard"s or "look-i'm-the-edgiest"s. Even though I understood why it might have come off as such, I've always thought the world she built was intelligent enough to play with appearances, stereotypes or reference its own authenticity or lack thereof, blurring the lines between real and the fake to the point you can't quite tell if she's being ironic or embracing it. In order to understand how brilliant she really was to pull that off, though, you had to be really invested in her world. On top of that, I thought her earlier image was just who she was at that moment. Maybe Lizzy Grant always wanted to be that girl, but didn't have the platform or resources to do so, it was always who she was deep down inside but couldn't manifest.

Take "Brooklyn Baby", for example. Is she making fun of "edgy" hipster girls, or is she going all the way to embrace that stereotype? Is she saying, so what is so bad about it? Are the things young women think is cool is immediately dismissed as trying to seem "rebellious" and "different"? Isn't there something intrinsically human about all of it? Or is she being completely ironic? Is it both?

There were times where I thought I completely lost interest, especially during the roll-out of Blue Banisters. I also didn't and still don't like NFR! that much. But I come to find myself growing with her, changing and evolving, facing my own traumas while she goes back to explore her own and eventually I've grown to like BB very much. The best kind of art for me is one that truly leaves its imprint on my life and I hadn't experienced that kind of thing after becoming a fan of Nirvana at the age of 14 until I encountered Lana. She is an exceptional artist and I'm more in love with her world than ever.

She instantly drew me in and made me an obsessed fan back in 2012 when I was 13-14. My interest was at its peak in 2012-2014 (through end of UV era) since I was a lonely, depressed, closeted teen with nothing better to do than to stan her and Britney online, and Lana was so unique and different compared to pop music at the time.

I remember getting slightly less interested in 2015 with Honeymoon, not because I didn’t love the album or her, I think I was just distracted with other things. I was excited for and obsessed with LFL when it came out, I don’t like it much now.

Again, I didn’t really follow her between eras, but I did listen to MAC, VB, and DT when they came out. When NFR finally came out, it reinvigorated my love for her. It’s my #2 favorite album of all time, and the NFR/Bartender/HIAB is one of my favorite music videos.

I got annoyed and probably my least happy I’ve ever been with her in 2020 with her Instagram controversies, meeting with fans with the jewel face mask during the pandemic when there were no vaccines, her filming herself while driving on what looked like a curvy mountain road, her repeatedly delaying albums, giving fake album release dates and titles, and false promises, and just her arrogant attitude.

And then I was really disappointed in both COTCC and BB. I like COTCC more now than release, but Blue Banisters might be my least favorite release of hers ever. And it sucks, because everything she’s put out and all her unreleased music has always just clicked with me. So I was super disappointed that her most recent albums weren’t clicking, and ironically, it made me post here more because I’ve been going back and forth between being disappointed and angry and trying to convince myself I like them lol.

That being said, I don’t feel like I’ve ever stopped being a fan or my fan card has ever decreased in any way. Like even with me being more obsessed in 2012-2014, I feel like I’ve been at a constant level of Lana fan status this whole decade where I just will never not be a fan unless she does something truly awful in character. I have very slightly less confidence in her artistic vision now due to her two most recent albums though.

I'm a fan now for 7 years and I can only repeat what others said on here already. I feel at home & starting to listen to her a few months before Honeymoon dropped was probably one of the best decisions I ever made
Every album has a special place in my heart & no one elses music touches my soul like her music does & means so much to me. I met some amazing people as well because of her music & being a fan of hers, which I'm super grateful for
I hope it doesn't sound crazy  lol but like being a Lana fan is a part of my life, maybe something like a hobby too & my life would feel emptier without her music & without being in touch with other fans

Oh shut the….And star power without a good song is worthless. We would never hear about Beyonce, rihanna or ariana if they had to write their own songs. Their stardom is a result of hits written by talented songwriters. It takes both. Perhaps we don’t hear about songwriters cuz they are massively undervalued, case in point this very thread. And your comment

obviously there's room in the industry for everybody... it would be unrealistic to expect every singer to be a genius songwriter who can craft intricate masterpieces from scratch and to write masterful, intriguing lyrics... but i believe singers/musicians who do write their own music have more artistic merit, there's a difference between somebody who put their own creativity and soul into a song and somebody who sings over a demo created by somebody who actually has the skill to craft a song... i'm not saying artists who simply sing over demos have no talent or creativity, but let's not act like they're on the same level artistically as people who actually put in the effort to compose and write their music lol

You listen to singers I listen to artists... There's no artistry involved in picking demos and singing on top of them. You can be the greatest singer out there but if all your music sounds soulless, manufactured and formulated for a hit then your simply put a boring musician.

there’s no “rickboards jackboards emileboards” because LANA is the writer of her songs  and taylor is currently the biggest pop star and she writes everything including her biggest hits….

and yea of course you don’t have to be a writer to be a star, i don’t think anyone was saying that, just our personal preference for artists is they write their music.

When a mainstream pop singer releases a "personal" album when in reality it's all written by 5 men and produced by some mega producer

yikes  it’s safe to say beyonce isn’t a huge writer

come to think of it, all the artists i rlly like and feel connected to their music are big songwriters (meaning they don’t just write like 4 words and have other writers write the rest)
lana, taylor, hozier…i just really appreciate that in an artist.
i like some of ari’s songs for example but i cant see myself “stanning” her music because to me being the main writer is so integral, and of course being a good writer lol.
