basically, the old man represents the music industry. Always driving her around, watching her in the back seat in the mirror, paying for everything.

john baptiste represents music. They perform together, they laugh at the people beneath them, they have fun behind the "man's"
    back.

then she dies (presumably killed or, rather, killed off by the old man/the industry) and baptiste is sad. his partner is dead.

but she gets a hollywood star in the afterlife. And the industry will keep making money off her image.

it's basically an afront to the american star-making machine and selling yourself and your art for money. Lana is saying she's not interested in that, anymore.

The music video somehow reflects her entire career. The rich old man represents the music industry, the diamond necklaces her success, which becomes more and more a burden. In the end she exchanges them for simple sugar necklaces and is happiest with them.

Not Taylor fans saying it reminds them Wildest Dreams, when that song borrowed the melody from Without You

    Another detail that I loved:
when at the end they show all of them wearing the necklaces except the last Lana (the one with the Priscilla hair), I think it could mean that she’s finally free? From the media?

    so many interesting clues

I so agree with you it gives me a huge sense of comfort, although the timing of it being right before covid is spoopy, considering how the album has a subtle apocalyptic vibe to it too. - “Nothing gold can stay”,the entirety of the greatest, the bartender video, etc
I feel like the sound of the album captures the last bit of good times most of us had before the world completely changed

    1. Ultraviolence will always be my favorite.  West Coast/Shades Of Cool/Money Power Glory/Flipside are some of my favorite songs of all time.
    2. Honeymoon is criminally underrated.  The whole record just feels epic/monumental to me.  The Blackest Day is a monster of a song.
    3. Born To Die had a massive influence on my music taste.  Summertime Sadness was my anthem in high school .  Off To The Races might be her best song.
    4. NFR! shocked me because it felt like such a departure.  The Greatest makes me despondent but it's brilliant.  California is absurdly great.  Shoutout to Cinnamon Girl too.
    5. Is Paradise an album?  Eight (nine) songs feels more like an album than an EP to me.  Ride is undeniably one of her best pieces.  Gods & Monsters is an old favorite as well.
    6. Lust For Life is very nostalgic for me.  13 Beaches/Cherry/Heroin/Get Free are all career highlights.
    7. DYKTATUOB will probably go higher in my ranking with time.  I'm still digesting this one.  My jaw was on the floor the first time I heard A&W.  Excited to hear some of these songs live.
    8. COTCC is not my favorite album but Yosemite is beautiful song.  Tulsa Jesus Freak is also a gem.
    9. Blue Banisters is not a bad album but it is NOT my cup of tea.  Dealer and Thunder are lovely.  Nectar Of The Gods is probably my favorite Ultraviolence reject.

Just because COTCC/BB are low in my ranking doesn't mean I hate them.  I bought both of them.  I'll always support her art even if I don't love the direction she's taking.

I didn't include AKA in my ranking since it was released under a different stage name.  Also I haven't really listened to it enough , I need to work on that!

Love her 70s inspired songs but I’m ready for her 90s electronica era..we already got a little taste with DBJAG..don’t be shy Lana give us your Ray of Light moment  would love to hear her voice over a atmospheric dnb or trance beat

Breaking my silence simply to say, all you 16 year olds will never understand the impact of Lana’s artistry in early 2010s, before you were even in grade school. The only “problematic” thing about the Ride video and Lana’s early career in general is the headdress thing, but everything else, she was a nearly 30 year old woman perfectly capable of making her own decisions and she had a very strong vision for her art, which everyone absolutely ate up at the time. Obviously Lana still has insane impact, but it was different and a different kind of it 10+ years ago. She was just putting her truth into her music and visuals, while obviously slightly embellishing things in the name of creating an immersive world, just because something from over a decade ago makes you uncomfortable, that doesn’t mean any of your criticism of it is valid. Lana Del Rey wouldn’t be Lana Del Rey without the artist she was back then, and you sound exactly like what the gross journalists sounded like back then. The boomerfication of Gen Z and weird rise in purity culture is so real, no high school aged people should be speaking on how Lana approached her career before they could count to 100 unless they’ve made a conscious effort to understand her. If “grotesque” art from grown ass women bothers you then i don’t think Lana is the artist for you
