I love that lyric, it is so spot-on perfect

I know a few here say that last line makes no sense, but to me, it makes THE sense of all senses.

not to mention

the whole song makes me think of Barack Obama and how I feel about him

and using the word Like as the meaning on facebook (so not taken literally as he is American

so in an Irving Berlin way saying I like an American (named Barack Obama)

much the way Irving Berlin wrote "God Bless America" as a plea. He never said God blessed America, it was a plea during war time for

God to bless America.

 

which goes to Kristofferson's  "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" and was taken by the wrong people the wrong way so much so that Kristofferson

had to a few years ago explain what he meant when he wrote it (and Joplin sang the line in "Me and Bobby McGee") it means one is only free if they lost every single thing they had and are sitting on the beach howling at the moon, or coming off of that, and attempting to remake their life for the better

 

which brings me to my other favorite line from "Ride" which in the monologue Lana basically is reiterating what Kristofferson wrote

and perhaps it's a Gram Parsons song the Byrds are singing, perhaps a Dylan song

God, if only Gram Parsons were still here and he and Lana recorded together.

(Without Gram Parsons, there were no Eagles, there was no country-rock at all.)

 

 

and years after Lana wrote the line from American, in true symmetry, Leonard Cohen sang a song called "Slow"

First of all, I'm simply amazed that Lana wrote this. It's so beautiful and illustrates a feeling very well. Something that I've been feeling too. That you try to stay on course for your goal, you were so into reaching them.... and you may never reach them... or if you finally did, it wasn't like you thought it would be and your dreams and goals just shatter. And then you're kinda lost because you don't know where to go or what to do now. And boy, I feel so lost and confused in this moment of my life.

Also: both of my exes had a problem with my longing for the unknown and being a free spirit, they couldn't pin me down, I seek fresh things super quick, so for Lana to capture the issue with 4 simple verses is a blast
