California is an early top 3 on the album for me. It sounds like a song she’d decide to scrap from the album last minute and we’d curse her out for it forever. Makes me feel like I’m listening to an UV outtake. So thankful she released this masterpiece.

THAT OPENER. Norman fucking Rockwell such a fucking amazing song. Album is brilliant she continues to do whatever she wants and has no concern for doing anything other than following her convictions it is so endearing. Who the fuck is making songs like Bartender in 2019. How can anyone who makes songs like that be this popular and successful???? She wears her influences on her sleeve with no pretences at all and that's what makes all the references etc work. Seems like she is in a place in her life where she has fully reflected on any hardships she has had and she has this new humour that isn't present at all on her earlier albums. I think this album has the most of her personality in it. She wins again!!!

I have been here for a reconciliation with Barrie for a hot minute they were such a badass couple I didn't think it would actually be possible. He was with her during the most bizarre times of her life through fame and how hard she had it in the media it seems it would be a lot easier for them to be together in 2019 where she has it so much easier.

i almost wanna check out the show for the song  but idk how to watch it in canada  bc i know hbo can be dicks about downloading  so if anyone knows somewhere to watch it for free, it'd be greatly appreciated  but then again i hate the idea of watching an explicit show about kids  bc its kinda creepy even if adults play them  although i know i would've loved that when i was a teen  but then i really wanna hear the lana song organically in the show as we were meant to  so maybe i just need to get over myself lol  but then idk if i can even watch it so idk why i care anyway  but lets all pray the song at least becomes a hit  and she decides to put it on her next album  bc its gonna slap

no literally @JehovahThikness Venice Bitch on drugs is truly the epicenter of psychedelic Del Rey and feels like an entire lifetime to live through. It’s beautiful and takes you on the best journey.  It feels like if her entire discography had a pulse, it would be to the tune of this song.

mastering means when the song was done done done. They may have been working on the songs for a little while. Like HIAB..it wasn’t done until June of ‘18 but it was the first one she teased in February (?). Also HTD, we got the first look at that one around October of ‘18 but they kept working on it until January ‘19. So it’s very possible Love Song was the first one they did together, but they kept working on it until August

and that’s very possible because we know how long Lana can hold onto a song

this is one of those things i see where im going to be listening to terrence at 2 am and probs right before the chorus hits im going to randomly think of this comment and not know where to go from there

i mean i have some issues when i listen to serial killer now cause i saw a fan video with actual serial killers with lanas song being used and the girlies in the comments.. one claimed that she regularly communicates with one and they sent her a ring..while i feel bad because she’s clearly delulu i remember i or someone else responded that it was one of those plastic rings you get on cupcakes from the grocery store
    ...cray cray

Carmen is such a well-written song. There’s the obvious storytelling about its namesake, but there are also two extended metaphors related to addiction and actual substances that make it such a genius, layered piece of poetry.

    The interplay between —

    1. The verses + bridge (that detail Carmen’s experiences, perhaps as a user)

    2. The chorus (which analogizes Carmen — the user — into the actual substance, with lines about potential effects [“cartoon eyes”, “butterflies”, a “mind like a diamond”] and “white lightning” being a likely street name for a substance that Carmen gets compared to)

    — is so enriching to listen to. It’s a tragically beautiful song and is just so eerily glamorous. It’s one of my favourites off of Born to Die and it’s so, so underrated.

I think there is so much more to this song than people give it credit for, and what I’ve just written here barely scratches the surface. I could write a whole dissertation on this!

The live version she did for NPR in 2012 is probably my favourite version. The acoustic arrangement makes it more haunting and lonesome, and her vocals shine beautifully here. The “weaknesses” are the strengths. They convey the true depression and pain of this track that I find to be absolutely beautiful, real, and raw.

This fan-edited music video is perfect for this version too, and conveys its bone-chilling beauty. I recommend that everyone who comes across this post gives it a watch — I’ve seen this for years but it’s so worth revisiting.

someone several pages ago was talking about like peak of the cold war aesthetic; 50s housewife becoming paranoid etc etc
born to die was released in 2012
2012 was rumored to be end of the world
10 year anniversary of btd = 10 year anniversary of the end of the world thing
    nuclear aesthetic confirmed?

I cannot stand Ed Sheeran’s music, I have a close friend who is obsessed with him and every day I wonder if I need to stop seeing her

I’m also not in LilNasX, I have no reasons, I just don’t vibe ~ glad he’s doing good? I just don’t care

Halsey's singing voice is so insufferable I don't get how people get joy out of listening to it. She has some cool concepts ever since she stopped being a BTD Lana tribute act but her voice and whole indie girl enunciation is just very annoying.

This is not about any artist in particular, but I have trouble getting into the catalog of any artist who doesn’t write their own music, or who you can tell contributed one small thing and got a writing credit. I know pop stars aren’t required to write music, that they are performers, but for me, it dampens the quality of how genuinely and powerfully the art speaks to me. I don’t want to just dance around to a song, I want to FEEL IT IN MY BONES AND CRY

@ItsaWhale89 mentioned the NFR livestream she did and I watched it and I have THOUGHTS. So I’m spilling them here
(I took notes and I’m just copying and pasting them and a little edit)
    ———————————————-
The background vocals in the chorus
    Redeeming her high notes

Jack “do you remember how the song (NFR) started? The old version :)”
    Lana: “Mm. No.”
    Jack “you don’t? :(“
Queen of knowing none of her lyrics!!
*Jack continues to sing the original version while Lana laughs and repeats him trying to remember*

She is so over sing the chorus by this point

*Jack continues to describe MORE of the song because he remembers the whole thing while she can’t remember any of it*
    Lana: “yeah. That was cool.”

I LOVE hearing DBJAG demo. Still top 3 for me

Omg she has to sing the chorus AGAIN

I love how you literally watch her create the old song again, she gets SUPER good when she stops caring and just freestyles (that “you’re back in the bar again, hanging OUT with you stupid friends” sounds better than the whole first half of the livestream

“They said the service is looking gewd” like! She’s incredible.

    L: “Fuck.”
Two seconds later “thank you Jack you’re the shit”
Jack: “oh you don’t wanna sing more?:(“
Lana: “no” starts laughing at that outrageous assumption
“I’m happy it’s (NFR) not a big secret anymore” Jack is over the fans harassing him, too.

Lana: “do you remember the first song we did?”
    Jack: “of course” silence.
(Coming from the man who knew 95% of Bird World. He was waiting for her to say what it was because it probably wasn’t Love Song. It was probably LA who am I or some other random outtake)

I love that they call NFR Normie

Mentions the triple video MONTHS before release

WHERE IS THE BEACH INTERVIEW LANA

Oooh she described the beach interview as “interesting” while sounding a little annoyed

She described Love Song as “stark” and is “the kind of song you have to have a video for”

Jack: “do you have a video?”
Lana: “I do. I’d like to paint it” add that to the thread of LIES

She realizes CG is the “sauciest”

The being “fucked up in Boston” time period inspired a lot of HTD and CG lyrics (and probably some of the poetry (sugarfish at the top of my head))

Jack: “Lana. What’s your favorite song”
Lana: *long pause while glaring* “Norman
    Jack: “Why”
Lana: *long pause* “I love ur chords”

She says Hope is eerie and weird to put out when you don’t know what your next record is going to sound like and you have no idea what your next step in life is.
So when she said she wanted to surprise drop a new album in 12-13 months after NFR, she was just being hopeful

Lana thought Norman could have been completed when doing Love Song and Hope (which apparently were also the first two songs so that would have been a super short album)

L: “If they still made albums that were still A side and B side, we would have so many joint gems” YES!! I always say she would do best releasing dual singles

“Nobody is spilling shit Allison, fuck off” has me rolling

L: “Do you have any pets? No I do not. I was going to get a family of 2 German Shepard”
    J: “don’t lie.”
L: *nervous laugher* “okay it was 4”
Jack is ROASTING Lana so hard omg

Now she has 2 cats and chickens love the growth

L: “Chuck, what was our first show? When we went ice skating? In the arena?”
    C: *confused look*
L: “shania Twain!” Ugh yes Stan Queen shania

Love how Chuck seems just as clueless about things as Lana

Why the secrecy??? I wanna know what someone at Fish left behind that got them banned from lack placid

“Do a video figure skating” I blame that person for her broken arm

C+J: “I was obsessed with shania” “who wasn’t?”
Laura: “me.” Well fuck you bitch

Mentions the three part video AGAIN
“Out in October around all of our shows” LIE

L: “Make sure I sign off before I say something FUUUCKED UP”

    *disconnects*

L: “I Fucking hate my fans” (I’m assuming)

I was watching Road to Singapore earlier and Bob Hope wears a black sweater and white pants throughout the entire film and I swear he looked exactly like the guy on the NFR cover, it was kinda freaky. I don’t know if it was intentional, but Dorothy Lamour does wear her hair in a similar style to the one Lana has on the NFR cover, which makes me think it could be.

so it's even more beautiful and heartbreaking and meaningful when u think about how she's at the port where goods come n go all the time around the world, but she's stationed there like she's overseeing it all in the greatest, mv. deserves a coke collaboration commercial i can see it on big screens 'fore the movie starts

Woah, happy birhtday NFR, you goddamn man-child.
Oh, HOW I adored the album when it was finally released. For two weeks straight, the ONLY thing I did when I was awake/not at work was listening to NFR. Every waking second, even fell asleep to it every night.
I truly felt NO ONE in the world was happier for or could appreciate the record more than I did, back then. That's how much it meant to me. Now I need to listen to this fantastic, the REAL record of the year 2019, in full WAY more often than I do.
And oh, yeah the opening line to the title track will forever be nothing but iconic and so fun, not cringy to me.

Literally this. I do agree with some of the things said, but NFR! is as LDR as it gets. It's just that it had such a cool concept and new sound, plus the social/political state of America of that time... it also came out after a "long" hiatus (for her standards), her personality was on fire (hence why the album is so cool as she said) plus the songs are literally amazing  Honestly my top 10 Lana songs is 50% NFR tracks

Anyway Text Book, Blue Banisters and Arcadia are among her finest works

Couldn’t have said it better myself! NFR is eerily prophetic in that way — I’ve always thought that Lana has a sense of premonition or higher consciousness, which is often channeled through her creativity.
