Barrie just said on ig live (paraphrasing) “nfr is her best since born to die, i likes her voice and every song on it, I’m proud of her and I hope she’s happy. And that’s all u need to fucking know” I’m shook. Only 14 other people witnessed it.

i think the critical acclaim of nfr and her new status as a joni kinda songwriter would make her nervous to release it.... if critics don't like it and find it stupid, she will lose some of the credibility she has built as a "serious" artist

I guess Brooklyn Baby might still get the single treatment any moment. Hopefully they send it to radios next year to promote Lana's newest album Ultraviolence

there is no “need for a better version of whatever you’re reviewing” to exist for u to think something is bad. there’s a lot of things i dislike and would consider “bad” without them having a good counterpart

agreed. she's riding a good wave of critical consensus & releasing a book that the lit world could ridicule would def be a big blow. i also don't think self-publishing is a good idea; i mean, i can see why she'd want to do it all on her own terms, but if she's in any way concerned about how it will be received (and imo she def is), self-publishing is a huuuge gamble & p much guarantees that at least some people will call it ~the self-indulgent endeavor of a bored pop star~ or something similar. she should get a mentor (if she hasn't already) and an editor, like, bad.

i don't think she's abandoning the idea for good tbh. she clearly considers herself a poet, jim morrison style, and prob wants to legitimize that by actually publishing a book. maybe it won't be the self-published $1 violet etc. one she announced, but i'm p convinced she's gonna drop a poetry book sooner than later.

Two years on and I am reflecting more and more on Heroin.

"I'm flying to the moon again, dreaming about heroin.
How it gave you everything, and took your life away.
I put you on an aeroplane, destined for a foreign land
I hope that you'd come back again, and tell me everything's okay, baby

and the tragedy of singing to someone who is long dead:
"I hope that I come back one day, to tell you that I've really changed, baby"

    My other absolute favourites:
"On Monday they destroyed me, but by Friday I'm revived" - God Knows I Tried "I'm hoping at the gates, they'll tell me that you're mine" - Born to Die "I wore diamonds on the day of our wedding, for our day in the sun. On the same day my mother to be said she wouldn't come" - Fine China "I love you the first time, I love you the last time . . . I'll love you forever - I'll really love you forever" - Ultraviolence "Was I wrong to go on like a little fool? It's amazing what women in love will do." - Big Eyes and the holy intertextual, ultimate hipster cool references of "My boyfriend's pretty cool, but he's not as cool as me" from Brooklyn Baby which evolves into "My boyfriend's back - and he's cooler than ever" in Lust for Life.

“I know I wanted all this in the beginning,
    I really tried
I know I caught you at a not-so-happy time of your life...
My dreams are bigger than your junkie pride”

    and
    from Try Tonight
“When he enters all of the lights go dim...”
“A dark room in the nighttime
Is how he spends all his time
If he could go on without your help
Then he would do it all by himself
But I don’t think he got strength to muster
And he don’t got a lot, lackluster”
“He’ll try tonight to not get high but he will”

I've only seen Lana Del Rey live in concert twice. Once during the Endless Summer Tour, and once during the L.A. to the Moon Tour; so I can only base my opinion of L.D.R.'s live shows on these two experiences. I must say that it was a disappointment to hear Lana singing over pre-recorded vocals, and I wish she would just get rid of them, I'd rather hear Lana's voice, even if it's not perfect and she makes mistakes. Having said that, for me, the great appeal of a Lana Del Rey show goes beyond just seeing her and hearing her voice, although this is the central feature. In my humble opinion, when I go to a Lana Del Rey show, I'm not just going to see some pop star, I'm going to some kind of modern day mystical ceremony or ritual. At that first show, Lana and Courtney Love were about an hour late, it was an open-air venue, and the show didn't begin until after nightfall, and I believe this was a deliberate part of the show. It is well known among esotericists that the human mind becomes more susceptible at night. Although the screaming fans at times hindered my ability to listen to Lana, I enjoyed being in the presence of that intense energy; this was also an integral part of the show. I realize that I am such a fan of L.D.R. that I lose my objectivity. This is just my humble opinion.

I definitely think songs like Shades of Cool, Is This Happiness, Fine China, etc. was about Barrie as well (especially considering they were all written during the same month). It’s not a stretch to think that they hit some rough spots behind the scenes in 2013 (pre-UV) before they officially ended things. Fine China is most likely about their failed engagement and Is This Happiness/Shades of Cool seem like a reference to Barrie’s depression like Black Beauty.

Just some thoughts I had about some of the lines in those tracks:

“You’re a hard man to love and I’m a hard woman to keep track of.”

‘She couldn’t say it to my face. And my plan to go back with her was dead.’
    - Barrie talking about how Lana left him in London and broke up with him shortly afterwards.

I remember someone asking Woodkid about why he hasn’t worked with Lana since BTD and he basically said she stopped responding to his texts/emails. Maybe she’s just the type of person to leave things at a standstill when she doesn’t know how to deal with it. She’s said before that she’s quite nomadic in nature, never in the same place all the time. This might explain why she labeled herself as someone hard to keep track of since she may not have been physically/emotionally available 24/7.

“You like to rage, don’t do that”
    - Is This Happiness

According to the posts above, Barrie drank a lot so I don’t think it would be too far fetched to say that this line references him in his intoxicated state. I feel like the bit about alcohol in the demo version of Beautiful People might be referencing these episodes too.

Another interesting note between this bit from Barrie’s interview and the Beautiful People demo.

“When you go out with someone who has a bit of a profile, it’s hard to not let things affect you. She’d phone me upset about something that had been written about her — that happened a lot in the beginning.”

“You get so mad when I complain
    You think I'm crazy but
I hear them talk they say my name
    They're fucking tired of”

    From newer songs,
Architecture is a given and maybe the final version of Beautiful People?

The color blue has become kind of synonymous with their relationship in my opinion.
“My baby lives in shades of blue”
“Darling you can’t let everything seem so dark blue”
“All of my fine china, blue”

So when I heard the ‘blue is the color of the shirt of the man I love’ and the following lines, I immediately thought of Barrie.

This is just pure speculation on my end and I feel kind of bad talking about it because it’s really none of my business but considering how much her personal life is tied into her music and how much we know, it’s inevitable.

What a nice couple Lana and Jack would make. The way they both look at each other during Hope.
