Sorry to revive a *very* old thread, but I was wondering if anyone had any more information about this sampler-- this is the only mention I've ever seen of it. I'm thinking about putting in my iTunes because it's a very nice tracklist IMO, but I wanted to make sure it's real and also know what to title it.

I'm also curious to see how some of these tracks are titled-- "Paris" vs. "Take Me to Paris", for example-- or "Puppy Love" vs. "Marilyn Monroe", "Kinda Outta Luck" vs. "Kinda Out of Luck", etc.

also, not gonna lie, I really admire the research/discovery and collaboration that went on here way back when! it would be nice to see a return to such collaborative information finding and knowledge-building now

Due to my kid getting a bilateral ear infection, I finally got the chance today at work to listen to this properly without an infant squalling over it.

Space is what makes this song work, to the extent that it does. And I'm not talking about the galactic kind cars float through in the video. The entire strength of the song rests on the anticipation created by the sparseness of the arrangment-- lazily unnecessary and unnecessarily lazy Emile flourishes aside. (What the hell do the gun sounds have to do with anything?) For me, the highlight of the production is the brilliantly simple but effective use of that xylophone or chime sound or whatever accenting the first of each of those note pairs. But overall, the song is not particularly inspired (in Lana voice) lyrically, melodically, or structurally. I suspect the song title was truncated to dampen the obvious comparison to "Young & Beautiful" as it is not too surprisingly, given Rick's involvement, reminiscent of Nowels leaks-era production. I am surprised by how much, erm, love it's been getting from pop music critics typically cool to Lana. But maybe all it takes is production that mostly gets out of the way for people to appreciate the loveliness of her voice, however reverb-drenched.

As for the video, while I still don't think it completely works, it is the anti-Tropico. Like Elvis, Marilyn, and John Wayne in the garden of Eden, classic cars floating in space is the essence of Lana's aesthetic distilled, what with her love of things vintage, SpaceX and Tesla and all, but it's not as heavy-handed, and doesn't scream bloated budget (though it may have been) or self-indulgent as much as Tropico. (I think Tropico would have worked better as three distinct music videos.) And thank the heavens there's no fucking monologue on this celestial jukebox this time around.

As a first taste of the album, it's no "West Coast" or "Honeymoon". To be honest, I'm a bit concerned by her bringing a bigger pop producer on board in Benny Blanco and her comment that she made her previous albums for herself and this one is "for the fans". I don't at all hate it-- I'm just underwhelmed-- but I'm crossing my fingers "Love" is a bit of a head-fake the way HBTB was, because if this is going to be the direction of the entire album, this longtime fan would probably prefer she go back to making music for herself.

I agree there is a gay diversity issue for the video, if you consider the video as a missed opportunity for some kind of activism for that. Maybe she thought she covered it elsewhere (MTWBT and SS?), or more weirdly, maybe she is targeting a middle America archetype for subversion (the type that elected Trump?), and not something intentionally representative of the LDR fanbase (i.e. not preaching to the choir?). Or maybe using actual friends in the video (which I learned from her live stream) put constraints on her. But while there are definitely hetero couples out in the open, some female/female couples might have been referred to *covertly* (e.g., 3:16-3:18  and 4:09?). Finally, given some speculations on Chuck's sexual orientation and LDR's likely previewing it to her, under some assumptions, Chuck might have said something similar about diversity, so the absence of (very explicit) diversity does seem intentional in some sense, but not in a contra gay sense. It seems more like not wanting to appear preachy about something the video is not specifically about (and not wanting to put overally conservative--aka morbid--people on guard).

The video's more into people being reflective and going "somewhere" and having a good time, perhaps with her usual ambivalence thrown in (that is walking in Venice Beach that's pleasant, but also driving into the sun? frolicking in a lake, but also watching meteors hit the earth?). However, I do think the overall message is reassurance. As for the song, l like that it goes back to pop Lana a bit (i.e., before Born to Die), but a gun sound effect (cocking a rifle?) is always going to seem a little strange given its context. I mean it sounds cool, but is that the only reason it's there? Maybe there will be dark stuff on the album too. There was also a Fine China remix that was briefly available on youtube that used an actual gunshot effect; it was taken down. While probably not a legitimate version of that song, I agree with others who have suggested that some version of Fine China would sound very fine on album that has this as a lead single. Eagerly waiting more news.

It's ming blowing when you're midway through the "Love" video and you realize that girl is that same little cute blonde who sang "Kill Kill" and "Jump". If it weren't for the name change and her dark long hair, it's been like a supreme evolution of Lizzy Grant

Transcript of the interview on BBC 1:

H:       And tonight, we’re gonna start it with new music from this lady… Hey Lana Del Rey!  How are you?
LDR:   I’m good, how are you?
H:       I’m very very good, thank you very much.  Thank you so much for your time tonight, it’s lovely to talk to you.
LDR:   Yeah, good to talk to you too.  No problem.
H:       So, new music from you always feels like it’s a bit of a moment, but this is a very very special moment, talk to me about Love.
LDR:   Well, thank you, I mean I’m just so happy that this is the first single that we chose because I really love the message and I love the sound of the record, it has like such a mix of everything that I really love, sonically.  So yeah, I mean it came out a little bit earlier than I thought. (and I’m really excited about it)
    H:       Any particular reason why?
LDR:   Well, I mean… It just started leaking the other day, so…
    H:       Ah…
LDR:   So, we just got ahead of it and put it out, but I am, I’m really excited about it.
H:       Do you know what, that’s brilliant, because I think that for a lot of artists, especially those artists of your stature, they can bury their head in the sand and pretend that it didn’t happen.  But the fact that you’re going “this has happened, but now you can have it properly,” that’s big.
LDR:   Yeah, thank you, I think so too.  I mean and with social media it just goes everywhere before you could even say, “oh no, it didn’t,” you know?  So, yeah.
H:       So, musically, I think you know what, this feels like classic Lana Del Rey, to me, but you have been working with some really very interesting people, definitely.  It feels like, you know you’ve worked with Benny Blanco on this particular one and it feels like he’s gotten into a Lana Del Rey headspace.
LDR:   That’s… I think that’s kind of true.  Yeah, I don’t know, I guess with the last two records like Honeymoon and Ultraviolence, I definitely was in a place where I wanted to hear mood music, almost kind of stuff that I would like to listen to at home, you know stuff I recorded live, in a room, with a band, like all at once.  But then, I guess now that I’m a couple of years down the line away from the Ultraviolence record, I think I had more I wanted to say, and I wanted it to come through I little bit more clearly, so it was fun to get back into that really big, like clean sound.  So yeah, cool making this record.  Benny’s awesome, he spins with Emile Haynie who did all that kind of like additional production on Born to Die, so it definitely helped kinda add that bigger sound to this single.
H:       Yeah definitely, it’s the return of the cinematic Lana Del Rey
    LDR:   Yeah.
H:       It’s in full technicolor as well.
    LDR:   Yeah.
H:       Now, is this taken from a forthcoming album?  Is this kind of a little warning shot for what there is to come?
LDR:   It is, yeah.  There is a record and yeah this is a good representation of where it’s headed.  Where the sound is headed.
H:       Brilliant, well I can’t wait to hear more, and thank you so much for not only letting us get ahold of this in an official capacity, but also letting us play it tonight on BBC radio 1.
LDR:   Thank you so much, I appreciate it and I’m really glad that you like it.
H:       When you’re over in the UK we definitely have to have a proper sit down and a proper chat.  We need to pick your brains on the way that you do things, it’s very interesting
LDR:   I would love to tell you, I would love to tell you everything, I’d love to do that.

I'll admit that when I first heard the song, I thought about how it'd be cool to see LGBTQ+ people in the music video. I'm not really that bummed out about it, nor can I blame Lana or her team.

Based on the information we obtained long prior to the release of "Love", there was a casting call for this video. They did ask for a variety of people, only stating that people with one or two specific hobbies (I believe skateboarding and playing guitar?) were wanted, but that it wasn't necessary to be able to audition.

We don't know how much they pushed getting this casting call out there, and we also don't know how many people auditioned. Based on what I understand with casting calls for music videos, and the content of the music video, I am wholly certain that Lana did not really have much of an influence with who landed the audition. She may have told the recruiters/directors she wanted any/everyone, but that's it. None of the scenes I saw physically included Lana with the cast, which would certainly imply that the scenes with the rest of the cast were shot separately, which is common. A lot of people get recruited for music videos and say they never met the artist for the video.

That being said, we all know Lana enough to know that if this was something she was absolutely in control over, she would have ensured that the video encompassed the love of all different people. She knows her fanbase. But I truly think that this isn't her fault, and has more to do with whoever was overseeing the casting call. After all, it wasn't Lana that announced that there would be one.

It's okay to be a little bummed out that there weren't any LGBTQ+ cast members, it would have been awesome. However, I think that it's important to be mindful about who we appoint as the transgressor, and also try to be open-minded to the fact that none of us have a first-hand account with the directing of the video, and in consequence, it's easy to make assumptions and hyperbolize a situation.

So it's fine if any of you want to come to the platform to talk about how you feel underrepresented, your feelings are your feelings, but I think that it's best to convey those feelings without implying that Lana had any sort of influence, or dismissing that Lana knows first-hand how much of her fanbase is comprised of the LGBTQ+ community.

And it's also not really anyone's job to entirely backlash at anyone who isn't happy with the video entirely or just some aspects of it, or invalidate their feelings. I do believe that people were in the right to want, or wish, to see LGBTQ+ representation in the video, but I think we can be more comforting, reassuring, and insightful about our opinion when we see that someone's feelings about the video come from an understandable viewpoint.

Let's give Lana credit for serving a beautiful music video for her fans, but let that be all we give her credit for; I really believe the casting call had nothing to do with her.
