The critic reviews sound like they’ve been written at gunpoint  under Taylors team. I’ve been negative of her, but I’m not a hater. The album is a 7 at best.  It’s nothing spectacular like they are making out.  I dislike the over the top praise more than Taylor and her music.

i wonder if from here on out taylor is going to be releasing just like, every single song she’s recorded lmao… she insinuated that the 3am edition has every song she made for the album, iirc lover only had 1 or 2 tracks that were cut from it, i don’t think it’s possible for her to have written even more for the pandemic albums than everything she released in such a short amount of time. even though that brings the quality of the albums as a whole down it’s kind of satisfying considering she’s releasing most or all of the vault songs from previous albums, and there isn’t even gonna be a vault post-lover LMAO. we’re literally just gonna have basically everything that she’s ever finished writing

Haven’t listened to the bonus tracks yet but that would be really cool. I appreciate how much effort Taylor puts into her releases, and I’m not even a huge Taylor stan or anything.

So I've listened to the album twice now + the 3am tracks (WCS and Glitch really slapped) and I do love it, love the atmosphere, lyrics and her vocals. It's def way more relaxed compared to folklore & evermore.

Buttt, the chorus for Midnight Rain is LITERALLY the chorus of my tears ricochet, the lyrics of MTR fit perfectly in MS's instrumental/melody.

Also, cackle at Lana getting the HAIM, The Chicks and Colbie Callat treatment :oopna: it's a fab song so it's okay

And this album is kinda giving me Ariana's positions vibes w/ the previous albums being much stronger/emotional, and these ones being lighter + more commercial, though Midnights is better lol

I don’t usually take album of the year user scores that seriously because as much so many people on that website like to play pretend that they are serious impartial art critics I do notice a touch of potential misogyny. Like a woman and a man could release the same exact folk album and the man’s version would guaranteed be 6-10 points higher.

That being said, the album is nice! I imagine it’s wordy because it’s meant to recreate sleepless nights through song and sleepless nights are generally made sleepless by a racing mind with lots of thoughts spilling out.

7/10

I can’t believe there’s 7 new songs that nobody knew about :lanahottie:

I still haven’t been able to listen to the full album because I’m currently on a birthday trip but I can’t believe I have even more songs that I thought!! I’m glad Aaron came back even for only a couple songs, him and Taylor really do make magic together! I’ve seen a lot of criticism about her lyrics but after folklore and evermore I’m glad that she’s dialing the lyrics back a little. FL/EM we’re huge pills to swallow

OK I’ve finished it and it’s a good pop album. It has a lot of little moments that are very pleasing to the ear, and some more experimental elements.
It’s definitely not the best album I’ve heard this year, but I had a good time listening to it

Not people saying she’s exploring “new sounds” when this has been done before by Lorde five years ago? And subsequently by Taylor across those five years to higher success?

This reception the album is getting ia mind-boggling to me. I can’t be the only one who found this to be a middling effort that not only is a disservice to her songwriting but also taps into a tired soundscape with a lackluster approach. I don’t understand how this supposed “songwriter of her generation” gets away with an album that at its worse makes Olivia Rodrigo sounds like the second coming of Joni Mitchell. Some of the writing here is truly abysmal.

So far, I’m liking the vibe of the album, I just struggle to get into Taylor’s style. I don’t like the way she sings/pronounces things, I don’t like her wild random storytelling on certain songs, and idk, I just don’t vibe with her. I feel like every time I listen to her albums, with the exception of folklore, it just feels kinda cheesy and like it’s lacking in swagger which I like in artists. I’m trying to not sound like an asshole and to separate my own biases out, but I don’t know a better way to describe how her albums feel for me than to say they just feel basic and cringey.

Like “it’s me, hi, I’m the problem” makes me want to gag. :crai:

It’s not about having someone to love me anymore

and Lord with an E did it better too let’s be real :D She might be highly obnoxious but Melodrama wipes the floor with MIDnights (so does 1989)
