The ambiance of this song during the verses is literally one of my favorite things ever. Such a mystic and desert like feel to it.

Oooh I was hoping someone would ask this. What interview?
As a demo I thought this song was my favorite piece by Lana. "Fuck you" songs, like Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan are so delicious, and the vitriol was so cutting.

    OH WELL.

I had this thought too. I thought maybe she's acknowledging that it takes 2 people to ruin a relationship, and it's not scrapping the original lyrics but coming back to them with a clearer head.
Except when she was asked in a recent interview, she only said she changed the lyrics to make it fit on the album more, and didn't say anything about a change of heart or changed perspective.

Wrote this as part of a multi-song discussion in the NFR Post-Release discussion thread, but thought I'd quote the part relevant to TNBAR here.

One further thought: If I'm right that this is about Barrie, I wish she'd left the name just "Best American Record" because that has an appropriate acronym.

This is a slightly idiosyncratic reading of the this, so I won't be surprised if people don't agree with me, but I think of the album version as not being a 'rewrite' of the demo, but a 'reprise' of it. In other words, the original version still exists in the grand narrative of Lana songs, but it's been extended by the album version. If this is right, and if, as seems almost certain, it and a couple of other songs on the record are about Barrie, it signals a change in how she feels about her relationship with him, five years down the line, which is fascinating.

The new lyrics are trash, we've been knew, but at least they fit the album imo
Also i agree with longtimeman and evilentity.

Yall can stone me to the death but sonically i think its her best song. The bridge strikes me so much, I love the melody, to me it has the same energy of the outro of Bjork's Pagan Poetry. The demo is obviously even better but this version makes more obviously to me that the song is also about part of her that wanted fame at all costs and now regrets it.

Just came here to say that Graveyard slaps. This album may put her back on my radar if it’s in the vein of Graveyard, WM, and Nightmare

Graveyard was not what I was expecting. On first listen I was like ugh no. But I had the vibe stuck in my head and I have to say it's noe one of my fave new releases.
I'm excited for her new album, especially how she described it as her realising she's not angry anymore, but wow she's still going on about how it's not pop? ASHLEY, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO IT WILL BE POP NOW, DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?! JUST EMBRACE IT.

But I'm a bit iffy about the name of the album. I know as she has bipolar she has every right to use Manic as the title, but I can already see people are gonna exploit that word because of it and use it to make themselves seem edgy and deep when they have no idea what manic is really like.

The download link I got from buying the vinyl has TNBAR named as "The Next Best American Record (Standard Production Master)" and FIILY as "Fuck it I love you- RE1" while all the other songs are just their titles.
Anyone know what's up with that?

Ask anyone outside of the queer community about her and they'll say her music is for "basic white girls" This is largely due to the cultural shift in music, style and aesthetics that took place among women after her music was released. The idea of her music being specifically for sad depressed girls is so common that even in metal spaces, where people don't know that I'm a fan, I get told to listen to her because I can't handle "real music" (which is due to a whole other level of misogyny and shit but that's a whole other conversation) Every reference I've seen towards her in tv shows is based around the idea that her music is for sad, lonely, depressed, teen girls / young adults. It just makes sense that she would mention women and girls if that's the main view of her fan base. Plus, as far as we know, Lana isn't queer in any sense. She may view her music as a representation for women's experiences and her wanting to acknowledge that, especially as a woman, isn't wrong. As YUNGATA mentioned, there is this thing that happens in the media, especially in the pop music scene, where women's contributions to pop fan bases is ignored completely. Hell, I've had someone on here ask me why I'm a member of this forum because I'm not a gay man, as if I can't be an active fan on here? They always questioned if I was queer enough to be a pop fan, which... sjlkfdg I'm neither cisgender nor heterosexual and that shouldn't determine if you fucking like a pop singer or not lol.  Anyway, yeah, Lana could be more vocal about queer stuff, but not at the cost of ignoring other folks in the fan base. Like I get it, I really do. I get why people want this mentioned. I want it mentioned more, especially since I'm part of a demographic that's nearly never acknowledged by anyone. But it's still partly coming down to some of y'all wanting Lana, a woman, to mention men before women... which..... *sigh*

Damn, you really didn't play in this thread! 2015 political me that was bashed by dozens of people on here for speaking about these same issues (and much, much more) is SHOOK
  19. Ultra Violet liked a post in a topic by Foxglove in Lana and the LGBTQ+ Issue...
It's funny that being supportive of LGBTQ people is political to some people, because for me it's extremely personal and inescapable. I support the sacred LeGyBTian people because I don't believe in self hatred. I express my gay love and gender variance because I believe in honesty and self expression. To have the most personal aspects of my life deemed uncomfortably political is honestly a slap in the face. I'm gay regardless of what's going on in politics. I am forced to be political, bc politics wants to intrude into my personal life, not the other way around. A whole fucking lot of cis/straight privilege really shows in this thread (and literally everywhere else in the world as well). Hooray for everyone privileged enough to stay out of politics! Be grateful for how easy you have it by even having a choice in the matter. Some of us don't get to choose whether or not we're gonna give a fuck today

I understand that it's scary for gay people to see Lana doing questionable shit like visiting homophobic churches, and I really think that it would hurt me too (when she made that stupid comment about feminism in the UV period, I was upset af). It is interesting that she never speaks up for LGBT, but then again she has only recently spoken up for women (in a kind of weird way too), so we can just assume she's not comfortable being political (and do you really want her to be your champion when you see how awkwardly she has handled the situation with Kanye)

Don't mean to bring anymore negativity to this thread but I've been wanting to say this for a while now. My thoughts on this new album keep changing. If I listen to it on it's own I think it's pretty good but compared to the rest of her discography it's just so underwhelming. Her old songs (including unreleased) were written so well. Each song had something special about them that stood out to me in certain ways. The style she's trying to go for now is basic as hell and it makes me even more disappointed that her newer songs aren't going to be as creative as they were during the Cry Baby/Dollhouse era. I still enjoy the new album for what it is but it just doesn't feel right listening to it sometimes. I don't wanna be the one kissing her ass if the quality of her music becomes shit

kinda bummed out nightmare wont be on the album much less the album wont have that sound at all. that's what we need right now, not more basic pop ballads like graveyard. hopefully the following one will follow that dark sound

NME about Lana : “Why is it that somebody like Jack Kerouac or Charles Bukowski is universally revered by @beam_me_up_softboi entrants, who are able to nonchalantly separate the artist from the art? In a similar way, Vladimir Nabokov – who Lana Del Rey references numerous times – is regarded separately to his fictional depiction of paedophilia in Lolita. And meanwhile there’s an assumption that art by women is squarely autobiographical – employ a bit of creative licence, or depict a protagonist with questionable morals, and you’re an irresponsible role model – worse, a fraud. And so, Lana Del Rey has historically been unpicked and scrutinised in the past.”

Somebody needs to spam this all over that Rantano review of every Lana record.
