i think so too. on her ig live she mentions the pattern of fragility running through her lineage and that she hasn’t been able to write as autobiographically as she’d like to because there’s a lot to unpack within her family tree.

the album is quite literally her text book, her history, searching for that connection with her father and finding matriarchal security in her “sisters” that wasn’t present with her own mother. she’s revealed a lot on this album, and when i listen to it i feel like she’s speaking directly to the listener letting us know exactly why she’s the way she is.

Expanding on what other users have mentioned, I think it’s nice that Lana seems to be settling into a soundscape that she’s been hinting at for years now.

I think that Lana’s history of drastically changing her sounds across records (trip-hop, jazzy dream pop, desert rock, folk) has made the last 3 records feel like there was no evolution of sound, but I’d argue that’s not really the case.

For example, I can’t imagine something like FIILY on Blue Banisters without it sounding completely out of place. Conversely, I can’t picture Text book on NFR! at all. Regardless, I think it’s pretty normal—even with the most renowned artists—to settle into a specific genre while still maintaining a sense of novelty.

Does that mean Lana will never branch out from her singer-songwriter, folky tendencies? Of course not—it’s worth mentioning that it wasn’t remotely long ago that she was toying with tracks like Doin’ Time.

Would I be open to seeing a huge sonic shift? Totally, but I don’t think there’s anything remotely wrong, stagnant, or lazy with where she’s at production-wise after hearing Blue Banisters in full. I think it’s similar enough to show how she wants to present herself as an artist but different enough to hold interest. Idk just my subjective thoughts on this

I agree with Lineage or even Lithium.

I think it’s probably Lineage but I actually think Lithium could be interesting as it’s a mood stabilizer.

I think there was an absolute shift in her writing around the time she started discussing Violet Bent Backwards and she’s heavily implied there was a hospital stay around then, and “With Lithium came poetry”,  that time seemed to mark her writing becoming a lot more inward (at some points a little navel gazing but that’s just me) and self searching. A lot less focused on outside recognition and if I’m honest, men. It started to regularly reference women and then motherhood which was never a point of focus in her work before, aside for a few mentions of ‘girls’. There was also, in my eyes anyway, perhaps not a ‘peace’ in her work but an acceptance of her current reality and an enjoying of it which wasn’t there before.

As someone on lithium for bipolar disorder, the meds and the diagnosis completely changed my life. Just my two cents on it.

Hi, guys! I just wanted to thank you for being nice. I wish I had questions prepared, but it is intimidating and you kind of blank when you are randomly put on a video call with Lana with thousands of people watching without my makeup or hair done. And yes, my Spanish is not fluent, so please try to be kind about that. I did it because she wanted me to. I am so happy for all of the fans she got to talk to and I genuinely hope you guys get a chance to as well in the future!

Bear with me, but I had a neat observation: after listening to BB, I think it’s interesting how frequently Lana ends a record by explicitly emphasizing femininity (often directly with the titles) and her interpretation of it.

This Is What Makes Us Girls closes her debut record with supercut-like imagery of the friendship dynamics with women in her early years. The standard version of Ultraviolence does something similar in closing with a cover of The Other Woman, offering a less unified approach to TIWMUG’s love-centric expression.

Lust For Life ends with Get Free, a track that defies the very love reliance she punctuated BTD and UV with, thereby adhering to this commitment for the women she felt were impacted by it: Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston. In its entirety, it’s almost an ode to women and their liberation from toxicity.

In NFR, hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have…BIHI—both in the title and its content—directly confronts her position as a woman that has been submerged in a world that often felt hopeless.

COCC (an album designed to clarify and embrace her femininity) completes her narrative with a cover alongside two women she reveres in their artistry, even allowing one of them to have the last note on the record.

Her recent release seems to continue this pattern with the heartwarming, irreverent ballad Sweet Carolina. The track is a reassurance to her sister, a promise of constancy as she emerges into the commitment of motherhood.

Whether intentional or not, I really found this trend interesting. You could make similar arguments for Paradise and Honeymoon touching on this as well, but I felt the other records encompassed femininity a bit more directly. Let me know what you think!

Me: “do you actually have a taste in men who are older? has it always been and it’s no surprise?”

I hope that you guys who weren't able to watch benefitted from my little real-time transcriptions until someone uploads the whole thing. For my actual real job, I'm a transcriptionist, so hopefully I put my skills to use! Will be adding this to my resume of work

Here's also a lil clip I uploaded of her talking about and singing Living Legend & Million Dollar Man -

why are you guys and ppl in the comment section being so mean..? like she’s having a conversation with someone and we’re blessed enough to watch her speak her mind. Wanting her to answer questions about her album and about her music is almost degrading when she’s having a nice conversation with someone. I’m so happy for Bryan and Zack because imagine how happy they are. y’all need to pull it together and remember she clearly isn’t a statue and is a human. I’m just in awe at how many disrespectful people i saw saying stuff like “this twinks been holding her for 10 minutes” like seriously….

"I think I'm getting at something... I love Living Legend that's actually about my first mentor Jane Powers. Sweet baby Jane don't know a thing about my songs but she knows I'm a monsoon. She knew everything bad about me but she didn't know I was a singer. I've got guns in the summertime and horses too, I never meant to be bad or unwell, I was just living on the edge right between heaven and hell and I'm tired of it. Did you like the way I turned my voice into a saxophone? Like waaaawawawawawaaaaaaa! I was trying to sound like a sax, I was really going for it. It kind of reminds me of Dealer a little bit, like eueueughhhh! Or when I was younger and I used to sing Million Dollar Man like one for the moneyyyy ahhhhh twoooo for the showww ahhhh!!! Looking back they're quite troubling, but I was getting there and that's the thing. As long as you do what you feel it kind of makes sense later and then none of it makes sense all over again and then you do it all again and man I just pray so much. I need so much help. But I got Rob and his little Hawaiian shirts and little Annie she's landing"
