This song was definitely born out of her mommy issues and how Jane was a guiding light in absence of a maternal figure. Interesting it should leak now as she has been more vocal about it this year. The mystery grows...

So I wonder if what's she's trying to say is... She got pregnant at 15, was forced to have an abortion, tried to commit suicide and then she was sent away to a boarding school..

It’s crazy how she has a whole story here, it’s like a diary without context. I wonder what happened with Dave and Aaron. Also, I wonder about her backstory of being sent to boarding school by her mother. Seems like her mom did a lot to spite and shame her. Hope to hear her full story someday.

This interlude elevates Candy Necklace. I love it.

I'm totally in love with both of the songs
also I think that their voices pair so well

this is so beautiful like they had their moment of inspiration. It reminds me of that Pixar's film called 'Soul'   If you haven't seen it I'd truly recommend it.

It’s me, hi  JON BATISTE INTERLUDE #1 STAN
I don’t know there’s something about this interlude that makes me feel like I’m watching a private moment of someone’s life on film. I love so much Lana’s laugh in this and Jon’s singing + the instrumentals might be my favourite of the whole record  I’ve had this interlude on loop all morning

This song surprised me the most out of all of them. The waltz rhythm is so touching and the melody is like a little ballerina dancing around the song. Lyrics are simple and phenomenal. And that bridge... It's actually a perfect song to me

This was at the end of my ranking now it’s one of my favorites such a magical song

Definitely one of my favorites, so bittersweet. I just know I’ll sit and listen to it on rainy autumn days, but also during spring and summer. It’s finding acceptance and solace in being alone manifested into a song.

I’ve thought of the lyrics these past say, and I definitely agree with what has been said. I just find her choices of cities so interesting:

    Paris, Texas
    Florence, Alabama
    Venice, California

There are many parallels and double meanings. This is a song about finding yourself and your home, even if you’re leaving something behind. The way immigrants left their homes in Europe to find new ones in America. She knew she had leave, just as they did, she just didn’t know when or how she would find what she was searching for. “I wanted to leave” (the original song title may SYML) and the lyrics “when you know it’s time to go.”

Show sings about many moments in her life, she has left so many things behind. I just know she’s referring to her moving to Alabama and Spain. I also think she’s referring to the movie and her photo shoot in 2010 before her fame, in a time of uncertainty.

There are probably things I have missed and will realize with time, but I just love this song, it’s so well written and multidimensional.

One of her most achingly beautiful songs. I swear this song will be regarded in the future as a discography highlight.

This is one of her greatest achievements as a writer, vocalist and artist in general. It’s Lana at her most grandiose and mother nature-esque, what a force of nature this song is.

    I’m still absolutely floored.
  15. theresawordforitinjapanese liked a post in a topic by Mer in Speculations on Lana's relationship with her mother
I’m still confused why they seemed to be on better terms early in her career (photographed together), and then things seem to really have gotten to a place where Lana is so vocal about her disdain for patty since 2021.

The things she sings about in WFWF and Fingertips, are they perhaps post 2013-14? Anyways. Mothers are complicated. Not everyone can handle motherhood. I had a mother who would…withdraw when it came to difficult things; so I understand, to an extent, what it’s like to feel let down—or maybe even a little betrayed—by the person who should’ve fought for you hardest…

  18. theresawordforitinjapanese liked a post in a topic by ayyeet in A&W
Hi, another small interpretation of Lana’s songs, knowing that A&W is most likely about Sean:

“Got a cop who turned on the back beat Puts the shower on while he calls me Sneaks out the back door to talk to me I'm invisible, you should’ve told me Did you really think I would spare your/her tears just to save your happiness? When I had no idea you were engaged. After all of those years, do you think I’d spare their tears to save my face? You must not have known who you were dealing with.”

It seems like A&W is about Sean Larkin, and a few other songs of hers, like Blue Banisters and Chemtrails Over the Country Club. Based on those lyrics, Sean literally made her the “American Whore” by still seeing her when he was engaged, but what’s interesting is that if COTCC is about him, if you pick up the symbolism from the music video in the breaking glass/mirror scene at 4:30, she sings “my cancer is sun and my leo is moon”, while breaking through glass and appearing completely unaltered and unbothered. She then turns into a wolf in the next scene, which wolves are known to symbolize freedom, intuition, courage, and self-reliance. Also, at 4:07 she sings “it’s never too late, baby so don’t give up”, with a scene of her in a car with her hands surrendering into a tornado that is pulling the car up in the sky. This imagery and symbolism, as well as the lyrics themselves show a spiritual surrendering to what fulfills her soul. And writing about her relationships is connected to that, even if they may be tumultuous. That’s where she’s needed, that’s where she’s wild and free— almost like her pain in her music from her experiences is healing herself and the world. It’s also interesting that if this is true, the imagery of her walking and breaking the glass symbolizes her not giving a fuck what anyone thinks of her— (also interesting how this theme is mentioned over and over again, such as in the Ride monologue— identifying more with freedom and being crazy than to live an unfulfilling life) she’s gonna follow where her soul leads her, at the expense of her image. Thus claiming the title of the “American Whore”, ironically.

This song sits in the middle of the album and perfectly summarizes the story she wants to tell:

”that’s how the light gets in”

Not sure, but I assume when she says she took a trip to Spain with just a notebook in her hands she's referring to when she was sent to Spain for a few months when she was 15/16 and couldn't go home after boarding school.
