I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say that getting the response of "you just want her to be depressed" is so, so tiring. I don't. But I also know that casting yourself in some curse-of-cassandra role, blaming other people entirely, constantly thinking of yourself as a victim of society and "the culture" and never questioning yourself, your motives, your actions, and whether you're right about things isn't a sign of happiness. She literally says in the interview "I don't feel like I'm doing okay. I just know now that I'm always right." That isn't a sign of someone getting better or "being confident", and from the fact she goes on to talk about the virus and trump and stuff she isn't just talking about women singing sexually or whatever (which she also absolutely did not invent). She's projecting out a shit ton, which again she says nearly verbatim. If you read this and came away thinking that she's just happy and confident I really don't know what to say other than maybe read it again.

It's not unheard of for people to think of themselves both as a victim and as a mega-genius. The two go very much hand in hand.

"Blowing up her own ego" is exactly the main impression I got from this article. Even if I enjoyed the parts where she discusses music or some aspects regarding daily life, the fact that her and Jack act as if they were some kind of omniscent genius bugs me off. Lana talks as she's eaten all the stuff the critics said about her last year ("a laureate poet of a world on fire" or whatever), and Im happy that she acknowledges she is talented, but what made me feel close to her since I knew her was how foot-on-earth she was, and how self-aware of her ignorance on some topics she seemed to be too, as it seemed to push her to explore deeper from her artistic perspective. She's always had a quite intuitive way to approach to reality, even if not always educated, she's always been good intentioned and sharp in her own ways, and I've always appreciated that honesty a lot. Now reading her talking about how she thinks she knows about everything while dropping the comment on how people will look more on genetics to know about their psychological issues... She obviously isnt aware still, at her 35 years, that most people in the world arent ruminating at their LA mansions about the "culture", but facing huge structural problematics related to the possibility and struggle to materially survive, and that mental health may have a lot more to with that than with intuitive healers or whatever she thinks she knows and we dont.
She's definetly eccentric and has a quite egotic and privileged way to look at the world, and I guess that may be part of her enchantment as weird and genial as she is. Not genial on the omniscently way she thinks she is, but in the confusing, sensitive and beautiful sense I think she gets to approach to the world.
She's random, clumsy and very smart too. Truly wanting to listen to whatever she's been working on.

I guess it makes sense that she reacted to the backlash earlier this year the way that she did if she thinks that singing about being crazy a hundred times over is equivalent to singing about domestic crises? All of her vaguely "political" songs delve into a very isolated focus at some point, focusing on just her feelings with the real world stuff just as a catalyst and not the focus at all, which is why I maintain that they're not political songs - she never gives a real point of view. And that's fine because that's how a lot of people feel and it's part of why people are drawn to her. But trying to claim that she "knew we weren't ready" and had been singing about it for years? I really think she thinks she's this generations Bob Dylan from how much she brings him up in relation to her and I don't think she'll really be of much interest to me for as long as she continues blowing up her own ego. Especially when she reacts to people's pain with god bless and fuck off. Glad we got some insight on the album, and thank you to Elle for writing this up, but she's becoming more and more of a warning against resting on your own laurels and surrounding yourself with yesmen.

Drags incoming but that's never stopped me before, so
I'm not a huge fan of artists interviewing other artists because such interviews tend to turn into mutual backscratching, and I am not sure if that's the reason, but I think she comes off as quite arrogant in parts of this.
    I really don't like this:
This just comes across to me as her shirking any kind of personal responsibility in interpersonal relationships and blaming the other person.
The whole thing has a tone that I don't like, and she literally says several times, "I know I'm right/was right". That's not to say she's wrong about everything, but Question for the Culture was a disaster so to act like she's some sort of genius who has human behaviour and existence all worked out is ... not it. I suppose this is her doubling-down on that, again?

Like does she think other people don't think about this?
With all that said, the parts where she talks about the music are good. Idk how I feel about COCC mentioning her girlfriends but that is, of course, her prerogative. I suppose that's why Chunk and Charlie are in the mv, because she said it also mentions her siblings.
Idk what she's talking about when she says she's going to have to raise her dogs, cats and chickens on her own, because she is never single ... ever? What is she talking about? Also why would anyone be surprised that she actually writes? That's literally her job.
Anyway, to end on a positive note, I hope it's delayed because she's putting "Dealer" in and making sure she's 100% happy with COCC before releasing it.
ETA: I also like this comment by Jack
That's one of my favourite lines, too, and I feel like it links back to the intro of 13 Beaches.

i really enjoyed that video, it made me feel strange and it put an ache in my heart for some reason, but it also deeply inspired me. it made me want to explore my creativity and my eccentricity, to embrace it, to express it, but i'm not quite there yet in terms of confidence... but i really liked this.

I was literally in the middle of writing poetry when I saw this video and it made me so happy because the way this is visually presented reminded me of the kind of life i've always wanted to live and the person i wanna be. i know its supposed to be sort of absurd and be a display of insanity but i really feel like it perfectly conveyed the sort of isolation that is a result of just being so dedicated to your work

You thought I was rich, and I am, but not how you think. Fuck, think.
I live in a Tudor house in Mar Vista below the freeway, three miles from the beach.
    Fucking asshole.
Or at least, we used to before you fucking left! *giggle* Anyway. *sigh*

Why can’t it just be magic all the time? I think it definitely can be. I think if you surround yourself with the right people, everything’s magic. But, I also believe boundaries create miracles, so stay away from the beauty stealers.

Do you think Americans have good taste?
I think they absolutely did have good taste, and.. I mean, I’m on the cover of Interview, so… *giggle*

Alright. Do you keep a diary?
I have so many diaries. If they were ever found, all of my boyfriends would absolutely be in prison. Yes, many diaries, journaling all day.

    When do you get nervous?
Me?  Oh, I’m never nervous, no. No. Yeah, no, fully confident. *giggle*

Crazy? Me? No. I mean, look at, we're at a magazine shoot, swear it’s ridiculous. Is this the right light?
I mean, I would absolutely describe myself as normal. Yeah. Yeah, by any means. I would say, if I had to describe myself in three words, I would say normal, playful, and… ah… curious! So, nothing in common with these people. I mean it’s really, it’s really sad honestly. It’s not like I’ve been in a facility for 90 days already. Ridiculous. Not my story.
Can you still see the diamonds? *giggle*

    Showers or baths?
Baths. Definitely baths. But, with my cats.

It’s different being extraordinary, it’s hard to be eclectic, Niko! But, if your mother gets used to it, so must you, my only children. That’s right. Nikki, no, don’t be a difficult child!
    *cat meows*
    *giggle*
*kiss* I love you so much.

I regret ever being scared. If I could go back, I would tell myself there’s nothing to be afraid of and absolutely nothing happens by accident in God’s world, I guess.

They say that madness swings to genius. Mel? Doesn’t it?
"Oh yeah. Without the highs, you can’t have the lows."

Doin Time is an annoying song with incel/blackpill tier lyrics and I wish Lana had not covered it (or at least kept it far away from NFR). The video is fun and imaginative though! I'm also not gonna deny that she did her best with Doin Time, it's just that I hate the song itself.

On the other hand, Some Things Last A Long Time is my fave Lana Cover (except for Heart-Shaped Box, I wish we had a studio recording!). It's a beautiful song and fits Lana perfectly. I always cry whenever I listen to it (no matter if it's the original version or Lana's). I'm glad that the cover happened.

I have been out of touch with the fandom, so forgive me if those somehow are popular opinions

I love this poem, I think it's the first one of Lana that has really touched me and that I find good.
At the same time it makes me happy and cringe a bit because I have the same relationship with Sylvia (and to a smaller extent, Marilyn) as Lana (as many women do), so it's a bit embarrassing to see myself reflected so well in the poem.
I need to reread Bell Jar because I forgot the part about the leather shoes. I've read it years ago so I only remember the big plot points.
I have high hopes for the whole poetry book assuming it's gonna bring more poems like this one.

she spews that she is so woke about every topic
and it rubs me the wrong way tbh.
like the whole lil phone and the love + fear era of acting like she’s superior to those of us who can’t afford to live a certain lifestyle of being “good” to the planet with a tesla & taking the “time” for mental health ... like any of us can afford to do that.

No you're assuming I don't know the history when I do.

Feminism is still feminism though, regardless of where you are in the world. That's my point. You're fixated on what's going on in the western world and you're trying to equate mens and women's issues when it's far from being the same thing.

And yes, Marilyn made her own choices, but it still doesn't change the fact that she was treated less than a man. Sexualising her doesn't make it resepect/acceptance. She played along because that's what Hollywood wanted from her but anyone who is aware of who Marilyn was as a person knows that she had much more to offer than a bimbo persona in movies that men typecast her in.

You're literally trying to equate men and women's struggles, that's my main issue with your posts btw. Women bring up their issues, then you chime in with "well men have experienced this..." when I'm not invalidating the abuse men go through, but it's pretty much in the same vein as a black person bringing attention to the #BlackLivesMatter movement and you responding with #AllLivesMatter.

Edit: Anyways that's all I'm saying. I'm not going to risk getting my 12th warning point and a potential ban for derailing the thread.
  19. Lirazel liked a post in a topic by Flowerbomb in Instagram Updates
Dude you don't have to mansplain basic history to me, I'm well aware of it.

I acknowledge that not everyone in Hollywood got a job just like that, and yes, it takes talent to actually be signed to film companies, but have you considered that women in Hollywood have had to sleep with executives just to get a role? A man in the business exposed himself to Shirley Temple when she grew up out of the child star phase. Hollywood has been run by men so if you want to blame women for the reason why film companies hired younger actors after WWII, go right ahead.

A lot of women like Marilyn were given makeovers to appeal to men's fantasies. Wasn't it a man who told Marilyn to change her name to something more sexier? To dye her brunette curls to platinum blonde? These women had 'power' over men because they were made up to be sexualised and treated like a sex symbol, not a human being. That's the only 'power' they had - to be gawked at on screen.

Again, a lot of your post is pertaining to feminism in the US, what about elsewhere? What about the women who get acid thrown in their faces if they don't obey their husbands?
  20. Lirazel liked a post in a topic by Flowerbomb in Instagram Updates
Don't get it twisted. Marilyn was mostly only seen as a sex symbol throughout her life and career and the same can be said for the other women you mentioned (unfortunately). Just because they're deemed as strong women now doesn't mean they always were. They had to fight to be taken seriously, something men never had to do. Period.

Why are you acting as if woman are just as bad as men and have had the same privileges? Yes humans can hurt other humans in different ways but women are greatly outweighed in terms of power.

Also your stance on feminism is very US-centric, perhaps look at the disadvantages women across the globe face, even in today's modern world.

I was talking about fragile femininity pre-rock n roll. I'm aware of strong female women in music during the 70's. However my point still stands. You can be the most rock n roll woman out there and STILL have men undermine you.
  22. Lirazel liked a post in a topic by Vertimus in Instagram Updates
That's not accurate or factual in 20th century and 21st century rock n' roll and pop music.

Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Anne Wilson of Heart, Suzi Quatro, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Pat Benatar, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, the Runaways, Joan Jett, Lene Lovich, Nico, all of these women kicked ass and didn't embody or hide behind a 'fragile femininity' persona, and we're talking well over 30 years go.

Joni Mitchell, in the 70s, was an undisputed master of various kinds of musical form, comparable only to Bob Dylan, and while she sang many 'sad' songs, her intelligence, objectivity, and criticism of the post-1960s 'hot tub and wife-swapping' lifestyle was unparalleled. Rickie Lee Jones didn't adopt any sort of 'fragile womanhood' pose either in the same era. She was 'street,' she was 'tough.'

Listen to Heart's 'Devil Delight' and tell me Anne Wilson didn't kick major ass--her vocals are like a nuclear explosion. And Joplin, Slick, Smith, Harry and Wilson were the leaders, the powers behind, their bands. The Runaways were all tough women. Nico's 'Genghis Khan' from 1980 is one of the most blistering rock n' roll statements ever. When Carly Simon wrote and sang 'You're So Vain,' and conquered the world with that song, she didn't adopt a 'fragile' pose; quite the opposite. Likewise, Linda Ronstadt told off many a man with 'You're Not Good.'

In the 80s, aggressive, domineering Annie Lennox was no wallflower by any means. Tori Amos has produced at least a dozen songs that challenge just about everything in Western culture, certainly the role of women, and she hasn't done it in a sheepish or mousy manner, and in interviews she's been quite abrasive. She came to conquer. And Courtney Love with Hole? And Kim Gordan with Sonic Youth? And Lady GaGa? These are 'victims' in some shape or form, or 'fragile women'?

All of these women have said, "I'm strong like a man too," in the very least.
