Rule Fifteen: Special Rules for the Music Awards
Original Song: An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the motion picture. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody, used in the body of the motion picture or as the first music cue in the end credits.
http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/86/rule15.html
That is the reason for a lot of people wondering if it would qualify.
It's weird that the demo lyrics were slightly different and didn't really fit with the GG though.

I'm so flattered you consider my thoughts and opinions as fact like I'm godlike but I didn't ever claim they were facts notice I said "I thought"
but actually they are facts that come directly from Baz Luhrmann and Lana herself. In an interview for cat radio Lana said she had 3 new song for her upcoming album; body electric, in the lands of gods and monsters and will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful. That was early 2012.
Baz Luhrmann actually said in a skype chat with Lana "we are very lucky that the song found a film" although apparently he did change some of the lyrics to fit with the film. Why they left in Rock n' Roll is beyond me as it's a total give away it wasn't written for the film.
It clearly was always intended for Paradise and therefore not an original song for Great Gatsby and not really eligible for nomination. Either the oscar voters did not know about this or it has been allowed through their very strict preliminary entry requirements for other reasons!!!!* But it did get picked up in the media and spread about on blogs a few months ago. In fact there was a mention of it being previously thought as not being eligible even today in the Guardian.
Surprised you can let simple things like this go over your head given you're such a drama queen stan you should be ashamed of yourself
* Lana clearly has contacts in high places, don't forget the SNL backlash which most people think is about her awful singing but it was mostly about "HTF did she get on SNL just like that"

To be fair you could also apply this to Lana or anyone else in the industry they all copy each other, I see a lot of similarities in Lana's videos to other artists but then they have used the same director.
To be honest, I'm still waiting for someone to break the mould and be you know just a bit different

She's not a musician more a singer/songwriter who is really focused on how things look, including most of her lyrical content.

Obviously not Nirvana's opinion, it was their choice and a good one, along with the amazing Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and St. Vincent. Besides Lana is an Axl Rose fan they ain't going any where near that
it was Nirvana's night, so be happy for them given the most important person to them wasn't there, it's not all about Lana it's about Nirvana and Kurt.

Um, yeah, this might be analogous if Lana was making statements in interviews suggesting she thought sexual relationships between tween girls and middle aged guys were great. I'm not objecting to the sordid or unsettling themes she sings about (and in some cases glamorizes) or anything else in her lyrics. In fact, that has always been part of her appeal to me since the beginning. But there's a difference between singing songs that fetishize abusive relationships and buying into that. I'm merely noting that I find statements of hers that suggest she may actually buy into some of that stuff disconcerting.

This is so shady and condescending but I feel like a lot of the fans who say this kind of thing have never even been in a relationship. That's not directed at you haha I just see a lot of the younger fans on twitter tumblr etc saying they "get" Lana's lyrics cos they like rough sex too and I'm like child pls uve only ever been spanked by your mama!

I didn't expect her to take "ultraviolence" so literally. I thought she was going to use the metaphor of violence in a more mature way like in her Kill Kill lyrics.

no one knows if she really said that or not. it doesnt seem like she would say that in quite that way but i wouldnt be surprised. im gonna wait til the album or at least another song/lyrics to reserve judgement on if her style has really changed.
it is pretty funny but its disheartening in the least to know she's advocating these things, if she even is. i thought she was smarter than all of that but..
maybe she's trying [too hard] to be edgy because anyone with those attitudes or 'anti' feminist or even at least equalist attitudes in this day and age..well, is a bit silly imo

i don't like that either?
lol not going to derail this thread w/that debate but bdsm is literally fetishizing abuse. what do you call getting off to hurting someone else/getting hurt yourself? yes there is "consent" but it doesn't change the fact that harm is being done. & please don't tell me i don't know what i'm talking about bcos i used to be a huge bdsm supporter, so.
i love lana's music and all but i don't have to agree with everything she sings about.

if ultraviolence turns out to be about BDSM, i'll set my stan card on fire. fetishizing abuse is terrible & the reason i don't listen to songs like 'push me down' or 'beautiful player' anymore. ugh. i was hoping she'd moved past that ('don't treat me rough, treat me really nice'). we'll see.

When Courtney refers to it as sick she means it's fucking stupid, I wonder how many more ways Lana can try and rip the Cobain's whilst getting it so fucking wrong

I don't know Swedish, but it's pretty similar to Danish and I know enough Danish to be able to say Google Translate has translated it back to English pretty accurately. Whether her words were accurately translated into Swedish in the first place is another question, but I'd be surprised if they weren't. Scandinavian languages have pretty similar grammar and sentence structure as English and Scandinavians learn English in school from an early age.
(FWIW, if Lana and her management end up trying to claim she was misquoted or something was lost in translation, I'd be disinclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. They tried to pull that trick before with the quote about her name coming from "a series of managers and lawyers over the last 5 years who wanted a name that they thought better fit the sound of the music." That came from a pre-fame interview that had the fingerprints of Ben Mawson's heavy-handedness all over it: "A very special thanks to Lana and to Ben @ SSB, for all of their time and help." )
I have to say I'm perpetually amused by how many of you bend over backwards and contort yourselves in knots to rationalize comments of hers like these or the fetishization of domestic violence in her work ("oh, she's just into S&M"), or to defend her against charges of being antifeminist (or at least insufficiently feminist). My enjoyment of her work doesn't depend on this very much so I don't feel compelled to deny what is undeniably a current in her work or abstain from criticism of it.

It's not the lyric itself or any of those others, its hearing her reasoning behind it that makes me feel sick. Like, those words actually came out of her mouth... I suppose it was implied all along with previous lyrics, but hearing that explicitly??

That's a Carol King song from like over 50 years ago, which Courtney covered 20 years ago. Lana is getting so predictable it's actually starting to piss me off Cliché -

I like it. I'm not in love with it. The only reason I'm listening to it on repeat is because it's an official single.
I do like the direction she's going. It's definitely not stripped-back as I expected. I always enjoyed her more rock-oriented demos/songs, so I'm really loving the guitar and the tempo change. I just wish her vocals were less filtered and there was more, I don't know, space between the arrangement. The lyrics are nothing to write home about, no matter how deep some people are going to make them out to be. However, I didn't like a lot of the tracks of Born to Die and Paradise, but after some time, some of those tracks became my favorites, so who knows, in the near future I might come back to this and love it.
I think one of the main reasons she's changing the sound is to appeal to a much older crowd. I don't know if it's radio-friendly and it probably won't last long on the iTunes charts. And I'm worried that some critics will think she's trying to hard with it. Which, admittedly, I kind of think so. Anyway, it's only a snapshot of the album so I'm not going to judge it. I'm just happy that the new era has started. Really looking forward to the music video.

Yeah same. It's like she's tried to pull off the loud/soft, fast/slow dynamic of two very famous bands... but hasn't and failed miserably it sounds like a right mess. Hoping the rest is way better than this.
